Character Turns or Character Sheets are a big part of the character design process. They’re especially helpful for handing a design over to an animator or 3D modeler. I’m going to show you HOW to make them, and also, why you SHOULDN’T. Wait, what?

I know I never really draw character turn arounds because I find them hard to do. It's good to know that a character turn around isn't the end all be all

I can say this: I have been working on a character design for almost 5 years and I think I'm _almost_ ready to build the turntable for it. In short, yeah I agree with ya.

I try to use the character turn around as part of the design process to get a better idea in my head of what they actually look like. I love your points though that it shouldn’t be used as an endpoint. Or at least, that you shouldn’t rush to that endpoint. I like that a lot. :-)

I was able to figure out some design issues this way because I had to draw the Charakter from the front which I never did to this point.

AAAAAAA how do you always have the perfect video for every artist struggle?? 😭 I'm planning a webtoon and I was procrastinating making the turnarounds of the main characters cause it felt too overwhelming, but this helped to make it less daunting! Thank you!!!

One thing I do is I use the front view as a template and then remove the features one at a time and make rotated versions to ensure it feels right... though since I use pixel art, it tends to be a simpler easier process since everything is aligned to a grid, so I don't have to worry too much about parts shifting up and down on different angles...

I actually do use character turnaround in my early design process, but never as a final product, more so I like to use it to figure out if I like a character's current design from the front, side, and back - sometimes a 3quarter angle view. Usually I love to iterate up on my character designs mentally and figure out how those translate to lines, I'll do a few poses and try out a turn around to see if there's anything I want to elaborate on, or simplify. I guess I would describe these as more conceptual turnaround sheets that I elaborate on through other drawings, I personally consider the end point of a character's appearance to be whenever there are no further changes to their design in artwork, past if they gain a new trinket or wear some different clothing at some points of the story, so if their hairstyle comes to a point that it doesn't change further, then it's good to finalise that. Although, I do need to get into the habit of actually committing to drawing ideas I get instead of procrastinating them away.

I problem I tend to run into with my character designs is making my character look appealing from a front view. This is not an uncommon problem, as a lot of characters like Phineas and Ferb, The Simpsons Cast, Timmy Turner and Mr. Crocker might like great from a 3/4 angle, they look absolutely hideous from the front. But even though I like extreme graphic shapes, I don’t want an ugly front view for my characters, hence why I have to cheat a lot of things.

Glad to see you're feeling better this week! Thanks for another great video. I think I can count on the fingers of one hand (actually, possibly on one finger?) the number of times I've done a character turnaround. Most of my characters are less actual "characters" than they are just an entity posing for a picture, as it were. I mostly draw as a hobby, so anytime the art gets too technical, it kind of lessens the enjoyment factor for me. I'd rather just have fun with it.

That's a really good point: turnarounds are great for finalizing the character and disseminating the design, but they're not as useful as expressive sketches during the ideation and iteration phases. I was going to do a turnaround today, but thanks for giving me a reason to work on some sketches, which sound much more fun to me anyways 😁

You always give the coolest advice. I agree with what you said in the beginning. Shape and sketch a character first- in fact (especially if you're less experienced like me) keep drawing the character over and over in different poses/angles to really decide what you want to stylize. Sometimes a character may subtly or drastically change over time, and then the turn around becomes inaccurate.

This is very reassuring. I get pretty indecisive on character designs and over time I find some things hard to keep consistent or they make a design feel too cluttered. Another great video.

Character turnarounds are a very important thing to understand if animation is involved in your project; since reference is key to any creative medium, creating your own reference is important for keeping your character consistent throughout its appearance on-screen or on-page(?). I know all this, yet I have never made a turnaround. I'm a monster.

Making them specifically so I can model them, it's always perspective that gets me, 1 little change in perspective can make it 10x harder to model, especially cause I'm worse at modeling then drawing currently.

Great advice in this video. I had always thought character turnarounds were, for lack of a better word, a "necessary" part of the character design process. But I like the idea that, like so many other things, they're just a tool that can be useful in specific circumstances.

I find the best way to create a character turnaround is by creating it in an animation program, where each frame has a new view instead of doing it all in straight line on one canvas. Using onion skin and scrubbing through the turnaround is incredibly useful, and helps you spot mistakes much quicker. I think it's pretty much impossible to create a 100% accurate turnaround when you draw it on one canvas. You really need to see the character actually spin to make sure it works This also makes character rigging (for 2D puppets, specifically in Animate) a lot quicker if you have each view on a separate frame already.

how much this helped! This video is a great introduction to turn-arounds, im sure all those tips and tricks will come in handy in a project of mine! And this video also hepled me see a bad habit of mine, when doing tur arounds, I just over-lap 2 diferent views of the character and kind of do a "in-betwen" kind of pose, and normaly it would look stif and life-less, but now I know thats wrong and how to do better, thank you so much!!!!!

Thank you for this! I had been feeling a little behind on stuff because I don't really have any turnaround sheets yet, but seriously I'm still trying to draw the same character twice without failing hard haha. I draw the same character 10 times and end up with what looks like 10 different characters all wearing the same outfit and none of them look quite like the image in my head. I'll keep practicing and re-drawing for now 😃

I made a turnaround for my main OC a couple years ago--but I ended up not using it much because after I made it I grew as an artist and realized I could improve on the design (plus my art style shifted lol)--so I'm definitely feeling your advice on this video (plus I don't expect to do much collaboration on my projects any time soon, so maybe it's not the best use of my time even now?)--i do find height charts really useful though, though those are kind of a different thing.

The first comic I finished was for a competition. Making turnarounds took way too much time and led to rushed pages at the end because of the deadline, I used them only because I spent that much time on them, but the rough exploration sketches were way more helpful for reference.

NO BROOKS JUST NO! There are not TWO MORE PILLARS... because I KICKED THEM DOWN! (This sounded so funny to me at 3am in my head XD) But I HAVE done some character turns for a few of my characters and as you said they should NOT really be done in the early stages or you will just be kicking yourself when you revise them later. That has been MY experience with it is that I JUMPED THE GUN and started too soon thus have some regret. I am still learning to draw though and character Turn arounds pretty much forced me to work on 3D Forms and some level or perspective even... so I do not totally regret doing them, just wish I had maybe waited a teensy bit longer to start doing them with some of my characters.

I am a somewhat prolific creature/character designer (in that I have designed a lot on my own; debatable that all of them are good, hah) and I’ve gotten into the habit that every sketchpage I do of them will feature the turnaround/orthographic views of the species/character along with notes about various details, usually nude so as to get stuff like markings and body-typing consistent. But I’ll also have other folders within the Clip Studio Paint dedicated to gestures and poses, folders for expressions and other things, including for ‘promotional images’ that are meant to be more like those showcase pics with a prominent key poses and outfits. So I do indeed feel that, yeah, for the conceptualization phase of a character is good to have both the orthos even if you don’t plan on handing it off to a modeler or something, and also to have various key/action poses to actually draw out the character of the character.

My Charakter turnarounds may be Not the cleanest, but they do their job. I use them to determin my charakters colour Palette, anatomy and their outfits. (Since I change their outfits every big Story arc to represent their feelings) Unfortunately doing real line art on each charakter would be just too much work. It just keeps things more flexible for me.
