This video is me unpotting some lithops that haven’t been thriving and checking their roots to show you what is wrong. I also went on a little rant about advice people give in groups etc. It’s very different when someone tells you what THEY do, Ie: “I water mine once a month in the summer, then not at all in the winter.” Vs someone telling YOU a time table for watering your lithops without a full picture of your setup and pot size, potting medium, how much light it is getting, etc.

Thanks so much for this video! I bought a few Lithops from Walmart and I knew some of them were unhealthy, but now I feel like an expert, I cleaned the soil off the roots and checked them all. Five survivors with very good roots out of seven, the other two were rotted. Now I just have to stop myself from watering them too much :)

I really like your comments about growing Lithops because I have always had problems keeping Lithops for more than three years. I believe that I probably did not water them enough at the right times and that is why I did not have much success. I visited Steven Hammer's nursery recently and realized that he constantly monitors his plants and has great success. I also realize that everyone has plants that are difficult to grow because of not having the ideal growing environment. I like the idea of using the gritty mix for new Lithops that are received in the winter months in order to establish new root growth.

John Wakamatsu, I hear ya! I know I lost my first dozen or so to under watering. Not right away, but over time. I was so scared to drown them! That’s all I felt like I ever heard was “DO NOT WATER THEM!” And even still I struggle sometimes with new ones cause I don’t want to overwater and the plant doesn’t recover and send out new fresh new roots. Sometimes you just can’t save one. But sometimes I just get lazy, and think I don’t have to Check their roots cause they “look fine”... and I always regret it! Live and learn! I certainly can’t believe how much I learn nearly every day, and can’t believe how much more I have to learn! I’m so far from an expert on these guys! I just follow my gut and research when I can find it, and then learn from my mistakes when they happen! 😉

Other videos are all for established plants! Ugh! So frustrating! Thank you thank you thank you! Also would love your opinion on my specific Lithops if you are willing to discuss them with me! I heard a new one at my local nursery. Their plants we a bit wet and I was inquiring why. They told me the grower gave them instruction to water their lithops on every major holiday. Even while it's putting off the old leaves. No wonder people have trouble growing their plants.

Hi Ashley, I am new to growing succulents. I just started last summer. I have many that are doing well. The ones I’m most concerned are my lithops. I got them about 3 months ago. One of them has collapsed and is gone, but the others look like they are doing ok. Although, they were all cuttings and had no roots at all. After watching this video, I went ahead and pulled them up to see what was going on. Many of them have a long root growing off of them. But one or two still do not have any roots. What should I do to get them to grow? I really do love all my little succulents and it would be a real bummer to lose all of them

I see your plant at minite 6:30. I love lithops, i know almost nothing about them. But, I love cacti, too. And i know quite few things about them, so..what if you cut the part from the middle and down which is yellow with the root which is probably dead..and let the top three days to start growing new roots? Thank you for your lovely video for a starter like me

At 9:18 a pot is shown with lithops in various stages of leaf change. Some well on their way to having a new set of leaves and some that still haven't split. Also some with spent flowers on them. Most folks say that the one with new leaves showing should not be watered as the old leaves shrink and provide the new leaves with all the food and water they need. Is that accurate and if it is how would you water a pot with so many different stages of growth in it?

Hypothetically if you were to use a very sharp sterile razor, could you cut off the necrotic 'dead' flesh back, allow the lithops to callous over like a succulent - could you then try root it as you would a succulent cutting? Just something that popped in my head whilst you were showing the lithops! Cheers!

Lithops can be so tricky! I just got my first batch about a week ago. I have a quick question: If it is common to let them go 3 or more months with no water whatsoever when they are full grown, healthy and making a baby, how is it possible that their roots don't die out like these ones? I've heard that their roots "go dormant" but what does that mean, that they have healthy roots but they are just hanging out all fresh and lovely without any water for days and days? How do they manage to maintain living, white roots without any water for months at a time? Is it just that they do die out, but you have to give them special therapy in the spring to get their roots going again? Sorry if this is a silly question, but I don't know much about lithops and have a hard time wrapping my head around how it is possible for them to do what they do! :)

Bought some new lithops yesterday from my local garden centre (who killed everything in the succ aisle) and as soon as I got home I found they had serious root rot. I had to throw away one of the heads away but I repotted the others even though they were in a pretty bad way. Looked like there was still some new root growth. Any one have any idea if they might survive?

Off tpoic: do you happen to have an ID for the 'goner'? I obtained one just like that a few weeks ago but don't know what it is. If not that's fine. Very good reminder for me. I've been repotting just about all my plants as I learn more about soil mixes, and I'm learning a lot by looking at the roots.

inhim7777777, Yup! That one was a lithops terricolor peersii. Now there are quite a few varieties that look almost identical, and even these guys vary quite a lot in their pattern, so just because yours looks like this one it may or may not be. I’ve never seen one of these at a store or nursery, but that’s just here, so it’s possible of course! But experts will tell you identifying lithops by sight is almost impossible. But maybe that will get you closer to an ID! 💓

Hello! Why do you prefer plastic pots compared to clay ones? I always thought that clay pots allow the soil to dry faster which was better. I use clay pots for my succulents but am thinking to change for plastic since they are cheaper and lighter. Also I sometimes have mold growing on the clay, which is annoying...
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 6 жыл бұрын
Botruc, in general clay pots ARE much better for succulents for all the reasons you listed. But for conophytum they often dry out too fast If they are planted in pure pumice or other really gritty mixes. I did a video a while back about pot types, and when/why you might want to choose different types of pots for different succulents. But I don’t think I ever published it! I’ll look back and see if I can find it, as it might be helpful. But for most succulents, unless you tend to underwater, terra cotta pots are indeed better. Most people tend to struggle with overwatering, so terra cotta pots really can be helpful! But for these guys they just loose moisture a bit too fast, especially the younger ones, so plastic works better. 😉

Hi I’m new to Lithops I’ve had mine since last spring but two of the group of three I had looked like they were dying so I split them off and they eventually went soft and squishy and as fair as I can tell there no new root growth just brown roots on the one that’s left but the top has gone see through and wrinkly like the others I’m starting to think it’s also dying off! I also do the unpotting and checking his roots because it’s to make sure there’s no rot! But I can’t see any it’s firm near the roots itself! Could I ask if you have any opinions for a general Lithops newb or if you think there’s a method worth trying as fair as I know it’s not split yet for new growth either but I’d rather my plant didn’t die off! Xx
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 6 жыл бұрын
Killtocraft, have they already shed their outer leaves? Because they can look like they are dying and be just fine every year when the old leaves die and the new emerge.... That’s my first thought. But if they have already shed their leaves, they may need a drink to stimulate some new root growth. 💗

Plastic is Better?
@phileofarm1
@phileofarm1 5 жыл бұрын
André Hryszuk, that seems to be a fairly common general consensus among conophytom growers... have you experienced conophytum growing better in clay? In humid environments they do well in clay, but as dry as it is here, plastic pots make them the happiest as they don’t dry out as fast. In general I use clay on all my plants, but a few varieties do better in plastic, and this is one. But if you’ve had different experiences or done research to indicate otherwise, I would love to hear! ❤️🙏🏻
