Taiwan Talks

9 күн бұрын

Taiwan Talks is in Manila for a two-part special following Asia's premier security forum, the Shangri-La Dialogue in Singapore. At the forum, China accused the U.S. of seeking to set up an Asian NATO and said Russia’s invasion of Ukraine was a direct result of NATO’s eastern expansion. We ask what's behind China's narrative and whether U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin’s speech gave fuel to Beijing’s fire with his theme of Indo-Pacific convergence in a multipolar world.
Our guests:
Jay Batongbacal
- Director, University of the Philippines Institute of Maritime Affairs and Law of the Sea
Richard Heydarian
- Host of “The View From Manila” TV show and senior lecturer at the University of the Philippines

A lot people don't know about this, including the Philippines. When US defeated Spain and took over as the colonial master of the Philippines in 1898, these two countries signed the Paris Treaty of 1898. In it, both countries acknowledged that the territories of Philippines lied EAST of east meridian 118. The island in dispute? It lies west of east Meridian 118! It is really that simple. Philippine did not grab these island until after the San Francisco Treaty of 1951, from a still-militarily-weak China. But for the policy of “anyone but China” by the world’s hegemony, there should have never had any dispute in the South China Sea. And it wouldn’t be complete if I don’t include the fact that the USA bought the Philippines from Spain for $20,000,000 USD, right at the time when Filipinos were fighting for independence against Spain… obviously Filipinos didn’t take this lightly. 😮

@@condorX2 Thanks for the details on history and your facts show that the details do get more and more difficult to understand when digging deeper and deeper. A little unclear, has US bought Philippines from Spain or have US militarily defeated Spain and just took the Philippines as reward? (in my understanding US did not act as colonial master like the Europeans did strongly) I would be very careful to take an US - Spain treaty as basis for the decision if a specific island does belong to Philippines or China. I would rather rely on distance to Philippines or China (the closest country does get positive judgement) or on language/nationality/origin of population if any and if not clear simply ask a Referendum decision by all people living on the island. Bringing up historical facts can cause a lot of harm, see Israel. As end-result do you think a 50%:50% decision is good (usually in conflicts both sides have some good reason and a compromise/some win for both sides I would usually consider to be the best solution) or would you rather target 100%:0% decision, creating 1 party to be the winner, the other party to be the loser?

ASEAN is not like NATO. ASEAN is more economic block than military. You might be thinking of the defunct SEATO. SEATO is a defence treaty of 5 ASEAN state with the support of other states including Australia, France, New Zealand, Pakistan, the United Kingdom, and the United States, committed to mutual defense in case of an attack on any of the member states. Was form bcoz of the growing influence of communism in the region

Nah,man..ur reading it wrong..ASEAN is from SEATO that is convened the aftermath of Communist Adventurism in Indo, Malaysia and PHI..and they saw that the economic timebomb it gave to that region may actually cripple the whole region..if there is no ASEAN we would be like the Middle East pre-Six Day War..so its a big deal regionally..China invited itself like a MARITES..

well, it's CCP supported Vietcong to defeat France and French Indochina in First Indochina War, then France left Indochina it's CCP armed Vietcong to defeat pro-West anti-communist South Vietnam and USA in Second Indochina War, then USA left Indochina, SEATO disappeared it's CCP helped ASEAN to defeat pro-Soviet anti-Chinese Vietcong in Third Indochina War, then Vietnam left Cambodia so ironically it's CCP saved ASEAN from Communism, or Thailand, Malaysia will be under Vietcong's Indochina Federation why USA failed to save SEATO, ASEAN then?

One important criteria for a sovereign State is recognition. If Philippines views Taiwan as an independent country, it must break off diplomatic relation with Peoples Republic of China to Republic of China which is Taiwan. If Philippines is truly committed to One China Policy, then it must not entertain thoughts of Taiwan being an Independent country. This historic fact is Chang Kai Sek lost the civil war to Mao Tze Tung and fled to Island of Formosa (Taiwan) to form an exile Government. Taiwan Constitution declares mainland China as its territory and Chang Kai Sek devoted his lifetime to recapture mainland China.

Philippines can’t be naive about their reality. PRC have proven their aggression, intransigence, violent disposition and imperial ambitions. They mirror Putin in fantasies about re-living and expanding their imperial past. They have a simplistic world view. Philippines needs to help set up a Pacific Island Defense Pact, which would include: the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Pacific island chains. This defense treaty would protect sovereignty, international navigation rights as per UNCLOS.

The only way the ASEAN can be swayed to the side of International law instead of sleeping under the debt trap of the Belt and Road initiatives of China is if the combination of economic strategy to the Philippines by the United States, Japan and South Korea will be successful. The ASEAN will change course if they see the Philippines progress under the leadership of the trilateral treaty of these countries. Until then, Singapore, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia, Brunei, Laos, Myanmar, and Cambodia will stay in course being under China's belt and road initiatives.

Why do you rebel against what is common sense the overwhelming majority of countries has agreed to? Taiwan is an island of China where the communist party never had any ruling power after the civil war. China has no right/will not be allowed to apply its rulership also over Taiwan by force/war, yet China has the right/can convince Taiwanese to accept China communist party rulership also over Taiwan by free will decision/agreement. As such the sovereign is China, yet Taiwan can continue to live happily under its not compatible democracy as long as Taiwan prefers so. A little complex, yet all sides should be able to live with such situation avoiding conflict/war.

My two cents on this matter, it’s pretty much what China since during WWII after the Japanese invaded them and ultimately seen a chance and over threw the Nationalist government of Chiang Lai Shek government, CCP seen the opportunity and the chaos and that’s when CCP under Mao Sedong to ok ov❤e😂r, Chiang Kai Shek and those who believed in him flee to the Formosa and what is now Taiwan. So that region has been in this dilemma for nearly a centenary, where little country along Eastern seaboard of China pretty much was taken over like the Korean Peninsula where Korea was one country and divided to 35 miles of demilitarized Zone along the border of south to north. Vietnam, Vietnam, Cambodia, Burma or Myanmar. Laos. Practically was occupied by China. So throughout history China was always on expansion and greed. That’s why late PFEM envisioned it in 1972 that China was about occupy the Philippines with helped of the Aquinos. He sent his military to stopped it but sadly, NPA was already formed. Not only that prior to this Chinese occupiers, the Japanese where there 27 years ago. So the country has shared common ground with the rest of Asian country the was occupied by China. History show how China will never settle for any reason. It’s because how they were then and how they are going to be to the next century and so on. I for one disagree of Richard for thinking that the Philippines should slow down to arms ourselves. History shows a little as Taiwan if they didn’t arms themselves to the T’s China would be knock at their doors. It’s volatile that the administration is doing is duly duties to arm themselves to the fullest and so that China will have a second thought of invading the country just like Taiwan has done. Look at Vietnam and South Korea. They’d seen the worst so they are very cautious of the situations that are brewing in the Asian seaboard and west Philippine sea.

Great discussions. A few days ago, I was watching 60 Minutes Australia a syndicated American TV Program of 60 Minutes aired every Sunday night. In it that segment the host interviewed a Chinese Billionaire who escaped out of China for being a fallen grace from Xi Jinping. His name is Desmond Shum. He is also the author of the book, "RED ROULETTE " In that interview he mentioned that Xi JinPing is a very unpredictable character in that Desmond Shum considers this leader to be a very dangerous man whom you don't want to trust. Xi Jinping seeks only power & control whether it be people or nations. Desmond Shum's wife was kidnapped by the CCP & has not been seen since until 2 years later resurfaced to call on her husband who is exiled in London, not to release the book he had written. The book is controversial because it talks about all the dirty linens of the Communist Princelings including Xi Jinping. It talks about theiru ill gotten wealth, corruption, infighting between the CCP factions.
