Chris ending on "I still don't know how to use a traditional Japanese toilet, I haven't had to use one in 8 years" is going to haunt me. Because it implies he was forced to use one 8 years ago and could not figure out what to do. That said, I do not under any circumstances want to know the details of chris's tragic toilet tale, thank you. It's just a really cursed note to end on.

Fuji was extremely packed when I went last summer but I didn't mind. We were faster than average so just went slightly off trail to get around people. I hear people say it's "ruining" the experience but I didn't feel that at all. My friend getting altitude sickness was tbe worst part and really unfortunate for him since he opted to go back alone. Other than that the way back down is super dull and not fun on the joints. More often than not the other people on the trail were fun to chat to while taking breaks and since a few of us are bilingual with Japanese we could chat to almost anyone who reciprocated. Most people were extra receptive too since it wasn't normal life where you don't want to be interrupted by strangers.

FYI, Climbing from Gotemba you won't meet many people until you hit the summit. It's of course by far the longest route, 21km long and with 2,350 metres in elevation gain. You start at 1,400m and there are no huts until about 3,100m. There is one emergency shelter at about 3,000m (among the ruins of the No. 7 station). The route is not so steep and consists largely of volcanic sand, which means you climb two steps and slide down one... up until about 2,700. Then the ground gets solid, but not stoney. The route up is of course serpentine like, but the downwards route is a almost straight line. If you're reasonably fit you need 5-7 hours to climb, and 2 hours to descend. you can basicall run down, or use one of those pan-handle sleds (from Daiso) to slide down on the loose sand. You can, of course alternatively go down until the No. 7 station and then move along the Prince Trail through the Hoei Crater towards the Fujinomiya No. 5 Station... there're also no tourists.

You can get allergic reactions to unfamiliar materials. Especially if they have some chemical in them. For example mousemats sometimes use certain chemicals that give people nasty rashes. But after a while it just stops. That's probably what happened to Pete with the tatami mat.
@TheTubePoweredOne6 ай бұрын
For what it's worth, you can absolutely be allergic to the material used to make tatami, which is the common rush (juncus effusus). I don't think it's necessarily an extraordinarily rare allergy to have, actually, but that's mostly based on some quick browsing I did for its allergen potential.

Parks Canada has had a reservations system for the highly popular West Coast Trail. The fees are quite steep and sizes of groups are controlled. The problem is that with Fuji not having had a regulatory system, trying to create one to deal with the problems created by the previous free for all will likely be problematic. Like the Rail Pass, the criteria for Fuji climbers needs to be spelled out clearly and the registration system easy to use.

The upcharge from vending machines and the "restaurant" at the summit probably already pay for maintenance twice over. If I wanted to climb Fuji again but had to pay 2000 yen and stay in a hut, I'd not do it. Even bullet climbing it takes 2 days out of your itinerary, the bus isn't cheap, the headlamp costs, etc. Anyone young that wants to have that adventure will think twice, if it's worth the hassle.

I've successfully read writing through Japanese toilet paper. It's like 0,5-ply. It's basically only there to dry yourself after making thorough use of the bidet function. I never believed there are savages who bunch instead of fold, but you actually have to with this material. Also, if you ever want to experience true horror, the old toilet stalls halfway up Mt. Misen on Miyajima, behind the temple, were literal holes in the concrete floor - as in circular cutouts leading into the unspeakable abyss. And you may have to chase deer out first, because they like licking up the salt (blergh).

That tatami mat Pete slept on sounds like it was infested with bugs, or maybe just the room itself seeing as how it was only his head that got attacked and was the only part of him not under the covers. Reminds me of the time my back bedroom was getting work done and the carpet was up. My sister was visiting and slept in it. During the night she woke up to find beasties all over her head. Turns out the woodworm had hatched, ate their way out of the floorboards and went for the warmest thing in the room which was my sister's head. :D

As someone who lives next to a mountain with extremely high amounts of hiking tourists each year - they have some sort of a camera thing that clocks in everyone passing by. It's only there for information gathering (and so small I don't even know where it is), but I'm sure they could easily implement that, and then simply close off the trail once they've reached the cap. It might not be an exact science, but that's not the point of it. It's just to reduce stress on the nature & facilities. If they implement a paying tax by the trail heads, it's easy enough to do.

the squat toilet i think came from china, and it's supposed to be good for your bowel movement because it's like a natural way of straigtening your intestines or somethin (i cant remember).. but regarding the toilet paper itself, i think it's just saving money in general, like hotels/public toilets/restaurants/etc aren't gonna spend $$$ on 3 ply toilet paper when they could save money

And if I were to climate, then I would expect to pay a fee to contribute to upbeats maintenance and being rescued.

Panettone should be eaten fresh. If it is stale, buttering the slices helps.
@bikkiikun6 ай бұрын
I mean, you can climb the mountain even off season (after September, until May), but different rules apply. You have to register your climb with the local police and you have to bring a toilet with you... because all the huts and toilets will be closed and the vending machines offline. The only thing that's available would be emergency shelters. That said... as "easy" to climb the mountain is during the season, it becomes very dangerous in the winter, and (2-3) people die every year on the mountain. The things that make it easy to climb the mountain in the summer make it deadly when it's covered in snow and ice. If you fall, you don't stop until you reach Hakone.
