The Champions League is the biggest stage in world football! Top football, stars and the best of entertainment. But the Champions League is flawed, it's turning boring and utterly unfair. Ed explains why smaller teams and former UCL winners like Ajax, Marseille and Borussia Dortmund have no chance these days to lift the Champions League trophy again. The UCL is unfairly dominated by Europe's super rich clubs like Real Madrid, Barcelona, Bayern Munich and Juventus - and that will be its downfall. Are we going to see a European Super League? Tell us what you think in the comments...

Of course they were domestic league champions, otherwise they wouldn't be in the EC1 at that time. The point is that if you were building a good team then, you could keep your best players for a few years. Nowadays players just get bought away by the big clubs and smaller clubs don't get a chance to be better. It's not about youth academies, scouting networks and innovative playing styles anymore. It's about assembling the best players out there. Hence the rich clubs always win. Hell, even Barcelona relies on just buying nowadays.

@@Rockpotje Obviously that doesn't apply to every player at a smaller club. If you are implying that a team like nottingham managed to win partially because the culture of buying the best players wasn't present back then.. then can you explain Nottingham Forest signing Trevor Francis mid season? He was in 2 previous team of the years with Birmingham and became the first million pound english footballer after his transfer to Forest, he also scored the winner, set up by Jon Robertson in their 1979 final against Malmo.

The majority of them are boring and I find them a real turn off. The whole thing is designed to give the clubs from the so called "elite leagues" a bigger advantage than they have already. How the hell do Man City get parachuted into the group stages by right, just because of the league they play in, whilst Ajax (one of the most successful clubs of all time in the Champions League/European Cup) have to play in qualifying rounds? The whole thing is like having a marathon race, where certain runners are allowed to take drugs (just like so many clubs from "elite leagues" end up financially doping, with their rich sugar daddy owners). Then it turns out that the riff raff who aren't allowed to dope, have to run the full 26 mile course (with back markers getting periodically eliminated from the race) whilst the ones who are doping get to join the race at a later stage. Of course one of them would probably win the race, even with a more level playing field, but further barriers are put in the way of one of the non dopers winning.

Only 1st place in the league should qualify. Not a watered down competition. Tshepo Rabekane yeah but the system perpetuates that. The big teams get the top pots and easier games and when you top the group you get an easier game in the round of 16, it just makes it so the big guys have a better chance to win and they don’t need to be given that much of a head start considering they already have the better players and biggest budgets

Peter E : The system is designed to make the game reasonably fair and entertaining. By separating the teams into pots, they avoid the possibility of all big teams being in the same group or all small teams winding up in the same groups. @@marknormand5276 You say there aren't enough elite teams but how's a team supposed to become elite when they're in the 4th pot of the CL and they're up against 3 top sides so they've got no chance and then get eliminated. The team that finishes bottom of their group gets the least amount of money so they end up selling whatever good players they have because the big boys come calling and they cant afford to match whatever salaries the elite teams are offering. The CL is set up for the rich to get richer and it makes it so we never get another elite team unless some Arab country decides to buy a club.

I agree, the last few years have been quite one-sided in the Champion's league, however, in our times, the tactics are "more important than the players". And by that, I mean that having a couple of top players isn't enough to win, while having a great manager and some decent players can do wonders. I think that we'll witness interesting football in the years to come.

Marseille? So you want the original sugar daddy club, who was found guilty of domestic match fixing to win the UCL? That's interesting? Surely the big difference is domestic league domination, take Barca and Real, they qualify every year because they receive the vast bulk of the Spanish TV revenues, Juve 6 titles on the bounce, Bayern winning the title by April every season. Your 10 year list had Liverpool in 15th hardly near the top, Atletico have been to 2 recent finals, the elite are not fixed, look at AC Milan and Man Utds recent decline. Messi and Ronaldo have been the main reason for their teams success, it maybe Juves chance this year, but both won't be there forever!

though a lot of the points are not great, he has a point about the money. It has evolved into a game where the rich clubs don't need to worry about losing too often. Im a dortmund fan, and how i see it, even if we somehow managed to win the league one or two years like with klopp, bayern can afford to cash out on player after player until the fix what they need. You'd never see a lewandowski, or a kimmich at dortmund anymore since we don't have the financial backing, to hand out 250k a week contracts and sign 50 million euro players. Our money comes from feeding teams like bayern talent, think sancho being sold to Man U today, so we get some good players for a season and have to move on, instead of keeping a consistently fantastic squad like man city, madrid, bayern etc.

Each team is ultimately competing against itself. You must maintain or improve, even if slightly, over the 10 year period. Over time your coefficient rises and you muscle your way up. It's not like there will be no movement within this system, it'll just be slower. e.g. those who are 7th and 8th best will be fighting with each other the next year and there's every possibility of those places swapping and that's the same for every pairing - 1st v. 2nd, 2nd v 3rd and so on. Of course those at the top get the best deal, it's a meritocracy, but great teams will fall and underdogs will rise.

@@Jay-jh5re Yes, different times. From the 70's to the 90's it was still possible for a Dutch team to compete in Europe. Ajax, Feyenoord and PSV all won silverware. Today it is nearly impossible. This season we even couldn't see the Dutch champion qualify directly for the group stages of the Champions League anymore, thanks to bad results in Europe. Luckily, both Ajax and PSV managed to qualify anyway through the play-offs but for a big club in an smaller league it is a disaster to miss out on the Champions League because they need the money so they won't get too far behind. It's great to see Ajax reach the quarter finals again but we all know that next season all the good players are gone and they have to rebuild again to stay competitive. Meanwhile, the big leagues and clubs are guaranteed 4 spots. I know their clubs have more quality but I would like to see a more balanced system.

I believe it is also harder for non-Elite clubs to actually become Elite. Dortmund won two Bundesliga titles and made the Champions League Finals but it doesn't really show since they didn't seem to grow from that all that much. They're better known and respected, but their squad is way worse than before and they couldn't sign an Elite player even if they were willing to splash the cash. It's the same with Atletico Madrid who had some amazing seasons lately, winning La Liga, making it to CL Finals and had decent League finishes each season in the Spanish League. Sure, they are better of than years prior to the beforementioned successes but they still can't quite get there in terms of becoming Elite.

Your logic is flawed on so many levels. The strongest team wins. That's it. Roma made the semi finals. Wasn't that amazing. That wasn't 20 years ago. It was last year. Liverpool made it to the final after so many years. You don't appreciate football.

Wrong he is correct big cubs like Ajax PSV Celtic, Rangers, Porto ect..... will never get to win it because uefa makes them go through 8 games just to get to the group stages while teams like arsenal who finish 4th in England qualify automatically, the system is flawed massively the old European cup format was much better.

Even though Ajax got to the semis and we had Tottenham in the final, this video is correct. The clubs with the most money will always have a better chance at winning. Of course there could be exceptions like we just saw recently but those are exceptions and more than likely all those players for any "small" team that surprises will sell all their best players to the elite of Europe (see Ajax)

Leicester for example was in pot 1 back in 2017. Remember the quarter finals? Monaco leicester Dortmund. They all have an equal chance. Liverpool for example who havent won a trophy since 2009 reached the final. If the club is playing good football anything csn happen

It's like people don't get what he's saying. There will always be elites and underdogs. But the current gap between elites and underdogs is larger. Also, it's more difficult now for a team to become elite because of the way football is structured. So there is less movement between smaller and bigger clubs. All the best players now a days are concentrated in a few clubs. You have top players as bench in big in big teams. GK that would be starters for 17 teams in the league warming a bench. This is the problem.

Precisely, Mark. It's getting harder for clubs to stay competitive with the bigger clubs. Do you think the UCL should restructure how it distributed prize money?

@@dwkickoff prize money distribution wont make a difference. the money isnt in prizes, its in television rights & merchandise, which is a direct reflection of the popularity of a team. no point in getting small clubs to compete if they dont have the fan base to back the club financially. even rich owners dont expect to just keep throwing money at a club. they want returns at some point... the non-elite clubs are actually doing better in some places than they were in the 90s. the english title race has gone from 2 clubs to at least the top 4. spurs have broken into the european spots. leicester won the title. atletico won the title. valencia pushed for one a few times. dortmund returned to challenging during the late 2000s. napoli were runners up not long ago. granted, theyd all have a tough time winning the UCL, but thats normal...apart from those 5 years where 'smaller' clubs won it, but even then the final still had one major club.

The setup is good as it is,though the only way I can see an improvement for the smaller clubs is having an award after the champions league has finished for the most well liked team in the Champions League and the Europa league tournaments with value under 200mill euro or something like that.The voting would be done similarly to Eurovision(so the countries with high populations don't get an undeserved advantage).Prize should be around 70 million euros,and it will be handed over for specific certain investments which will be coming after the club forwarded an investment plan so the owners of the club doesn't just pocket the money.

I get your point but that's what we want to see. We don't want to watch a weaker team at the latter stages. Big names will always be hyped up and build up our mood and interest to watch these games. I'm a United supporter, we've dropped standards for some years now but I rather watch a game against world class players like PSG rather than a Zenit or Porto. The name is Champions League for a reason.

AC Milan dug their own grave..They sold their best players like Kaka and they depended on an ageing squad for success..they never prepared for replacing Nesta, Seedorf, Gattuso, Maldini, and many others..Its their own fault. Same with Inter..Apart from Juventus every other big team in Seria A are a mess..
@dwkickoff

So do you think it's more about poor management, Sriram? Could AC Milan return to the top in the current climate?
@CS-sv8fg
@CS-sv8fg 5 жыл бұрын
Seria A in general is a mess..It's obvious its poor management..Look at the transfer policy..How many times have big players switched between Milan-Inter-Juventus-Roma, and these are one of the biggest rivalries in world football..I think the league needs to be fixed first and then the clubs will sort it out..Not enough Italian talents like before.. Imagine if Milan and Inter were as stable as the other big teams, top class players would be distributed in many leagues and better competition in champions league..Nowadays there are only a handful of top class teams to choose for young talents like M'bappe to sign for..Barca and Madrid are the obvious..then comes Bayern and Juventus...and then clubs with just money like PSG and Man City.. Man Utd and Chelsea attract players but they are not doing well in the league..Liverpool develop decent players into world class but i don't think they could afford someone like an M'bappe! If we had Milan,Inter,Arsenal,Dortmund,Lyon,Marseilles,Roma,Valencia, Porto,Benfica,Ajax,PSV,etc.., with stable and high revenue it would level the playing field and give top players a variety of options to play for and make it exciting!! And agents play a big role as well.. It looks like the agent decides the future for the player and not the player himself! Sad

Y’all should watch Liga MX their you’ll see teams being good one season and bad the next. Everyone has a chance their to win. Guadalajara has 12 titles under their name and they didn’t make to Liguilla or America who was champ last season now sits in 11 place. Teams like Atlas and Leon that did bad now are doing good so far and don’t forget Querétaro which usually never wins games they surprisingly made it to Liguilla last apertura season and now this clausura they haven’t won a game and it’s already in week 8 of 17

My issues with this video: Ajax and Porto have progressed to the top in 2018-19 league. Ajax have a steller squad and might even bear Juve. All the big clubs scramble to get players from lower teams like Dortmund (Jordon Sancho), Ajax (Frakie De Jong), Napoli (Koulabali). Thus these lower teams can cash in on this. So the money is flowing from big clubs to small ones. Even though the same teams move to the finals, it's still amazing to watch the super elite battle it out
