This was a deep-dive into what writing music looks like as an undergraduate music composition major. Working on concert band/wind ensemble music is always super fun but also very challenging, and I hope to get this project finished this spring. If you have any suggestions on how to go about writing large ensemble works or about your creative process/workflow as a composer, leave them down below for other composers to find and benefit from. Thanks for watching!

Also don't take the thumbnail too seriously; I love my boy Beethoven.

I love your channel! As a beginning composer, I'd love to hear if you could share some useful composition exercises? My current favorite is to try to compose in a similar style to some composer, like Beethoven or Gerschwin, for example

Good video, it's very interesting. Do you have any resources on how to study on writing for band? I'm used to writing/arranging for orchestra so I'm not really getting the hang of everything.

There’s a good series of books for orchestration for band by Bret Newton. Sorry for the late reply!

Hi Carlos, may I ask for tips on how to arrange based on the instrument’s range and dynamics? Thank you.
@CarlosLalonde
@CarlosLalonde 3 жыл бұрын
So assuming you're working with a band or orchestra, it's important to know the full ranges and tessituras (comfortable range) of the instruments and their timbres (tone colors) in those ranges. Often knowing the ranges will inform you on dynamics. For example, a flute in their higher registers is really piercing and can be heard in large texture, but it's extremely quiet in its low register, so you should use it sparingly in a light texture. On the other hand, an oboe is much louder in its lower register but not so much in the higher registers (for the most part).

I feel like this might be a me problem, but when I write for band I always forget that these people need to breathe. Does anyone have advice for not getting blacklisted in the band community for things like that.
@CarlosLalonde

As long you're aware of where phrases end and have natural places to breathe, you should be fine. You can also experiment with staggered breathing which helps with long sustained notes. But if there is no obvious place to breathe, then you need to revise your writing.
