Interesting to look back on this 2 years later. The main point still stands, but clearly needs some nuance. Specs don't matter, as long as they're roughly in the same ballpark. The Wii U clearly has a lot of issues getting support from third party developers since it's so different from the other 2 consoles that developers can't just port games over. Project Cars and the all-but-dead Wii U version is a good example of this. The poor initial sales also mean that games focused on the Wii U are a hard business case to justify. Here the fact that Ubisoft is holding back finished games just because they wouldn't sell enough to justify shipping them is also a good example. Too top it all off, rumors are that Nintendo will announce a new console that's more powerful before the end of the year. So technical details do actually matter, but they're usually not the determining factor. Just like with everything moderation is key. Give them some attention, but don't get blinded by it.

Why do people even bother with consoles now? A PC is cheaper and delivers a MUCH better experience.

This video was great, but the ps3 dualshock 3 controller already had motion control. The day one console release Ratchet and Clank game used it, along with a few others early in the consoles life.

Touchpad actually turned out to be pretty great. E.g. HZD and it's use in the dynamic hud. Nier Automata let you "pet" your pod using the touchpad. Very tactile.

The touch pad absolutely saved my experience with the PS4 version of Final Fantasy XIV ARR. Being able to access stuff in the various menus on the fly by generating a cursor is fantastic.

Relying on streaming is a bad idea, because once they close servers for a system, say bye bye to your games. Companies have a habit of closing down servers for older systems despite still making them money, so they can force us all to take it up the ass and spend more money on their newest consoles. Give me good old physical games any time.

Consoles are so very different from PCs. Consoles are for simple usage, specialties, and set experiences, while PCs are for maximal power, a standardised and efficient format, and the ultimste work machine. very different. I have both consoles and PCs, since I have different uses for them.

Maybe the Move bar could be used to take advantage of that thing we all do where we move the controller upwards if we want a critical hit, or lean sideways to turn in a racing game.

As far as i can tell the touchpad is a fancy "open your upgrade menu" button. That seems to be its most common (and most reasonable) use for it.

We are in the end of 2015 and sony clearly won the war. Playstation 4 is a success and is by far the best system for gaming. The funny thing is the first time the console with better specs won the console war, and weird thing is the fact playstation 4 is the better console and cheapest and until now sold more then wii u and xbox one together worldwide. Clearly sony learn with the mistake from playstation 3 and made a great system! Honestly I used to think this new generation probably would sell poorly but actually is selling better then the generations before... With this fast selling rate from ps4, the console can even beat the record from playstation 2 in the next years. I was quiet surprise how things turn out in this generation to be honest. I never expect to sony recover so fast became the leader again. Sony clearly short the things out and decide to make a system for the gamers period. And ironacly Nintendo did the exact same mistake as Sega did from sega mega to dreamcast, and Microsoft made the same mistake like Sony did with playstation 3.

Looking back at this, I'm...rather sad. I had the Eyetoy on the PS2, and I loved it. To this day, until seeing this two year old video, I had no idea they had plans to bring the Eyetoy back. They never did, to my knowledge.

about game streaming: the PS4 is capable of decoding 4K movies, but the hdmi standard i capped at 30fps (dunno about hardware). if the displays are becoming denser, maybe even 8k, then having 60fps is probably impossible, so they must push new console, but they might just integrate it into their TVs

I'm probably wrong on this, but I would not count the NeoGeo as a player in the console war, it sold too little for that. And with SNES vs Genesis, SNES was more powerful and it won. (although yes, I know Genesis had more MHz, but SNES had more of everything else)

Not exclusives, the overall libraries available. I liked PC and Wii. Good prices, large libraries and a relatively decent community that's less fanboyish...than some _other_ consoles.

Oo in retrospect you missed the mark about the PS4 share button. I mean I thought the same thing as you at the time, but now I have one I have to say it fixed a problem a lot of gamers had that wanted to easily capture gameplay footage and it has access to editing too...

Video is so outdated. 1. Xbox One (Durango in the video) didn't catch up and is far worse with specs. 2. Editing of videos is allowed on the ps4 with the share factory.

Thank you so much for the input! And while I don't do a lot of 3D animating, I do feel like the console market will, once again, hold back the PC in terms of any of those intense features. In time we'll start seeing some amazing stuff (particularly from your profession!), but until then, we just need to cater less to inferior systems in order to please the market, which brings me back to the main point, that console specs only matter to the PC gamers, and prepare to need to upgrade. :)

All I know is the equipment I choose to game on can also be used to design and program the games that are played on consoles.

Eh, for me, the main reason I don't really care about the spec war and what not is because the spec war is pretty damn stupid. I already spoke out my opinion long ago, but hey, I have some time to kill and I want to tell it again since I made my comment well over a year ago. The reason I think the spec war is stupid as all hell is because specs do not matter. Specs are not what make a console, games do. Games are what make consoles what they are. All consoles have awesome exclusives to them. Xbox has the Halo and gears of war series, Sony has Naughty Dog, We all know what nintendo has, and PC has all the indie games my hipster self drools upon (QUALITY indie games). I yet to find someone buy one console over the other purely on specs. Just stop the stupid spec war because at the end of the day, we are all gamers, bound for our love of video games. At the end of a long day, whether you grab hold of controller, or place your fingers on a keyboard, we ALL play games, and that's what matters.

This episode sums up several opinions I have with new(er) consoles.

This current generation may seem to be the one to buck the trend but I think we all agree that the Xbawk one would have been much better recived and sold better without the anti-consumer BS on it.

I'm so irritated by the reasoning why most powerful consoles of each generation didn't win in the end. With their being only 7 generations, and with ~3 consoles in each generation, sample size is way too small to draw a conclusion that specs don't matter. What's more, many of console releases had such big caveats that it swamps any reasoning. For example, original Xbox. Yeah, it sold way less. But it was a first console from MS. No fan following, no IP library to tap into, etc. And yet, it allowed next gen to kick sony's ass. Sega's master system was released 2 years later than NES, which is eternity when console cycles were 3-5 years. And console price of 650$, it wasn't even intended to become home console, but primarily as an arcade system and later as a luxury home system. So ofc it couldn't achieve best numbers. Of course specs matter. But in a particular way. Console cannot have less power than needed to run 3rd party games. Else it will have it's lunch ate by other consoles. Just look at WiiU.

If people keep on rambling on what looks the best, then i think that the gaming community has turned into big piles of dips, mainly the pc people for telling how good their games look and shit on the consoles that has games for the family to enjoy and have fun with. Its the experience that matters. If you make a really good looking game (fx battlefield 4) with a crap story that makes no sense, people will praise the looks over the experience. You can have one of the two trump on the over, you can make profit, but if you balance it perfectly, it will profit in a day (grand theft auto 5 did that). Also, console games need to go through a game check thing where they get tested and if its good enough, it will be in shelfs, where as on pc, you can make a game, slap it on the internet and call it a day, no matter how bad it is, its now avaiable for the world to download. That proves that the consoles have a place in the gaming market and is not a poor mans theater show.

Eeh.. get you facts straight. NES vs master system, yea sure the master system had higher clock on the main CPU, but it was really the sprite processor that made all the difference... they was quite simular, but NES had a 2 year head start. SNES vs the NEO GEO,, the Neo Geo was not really in the race. Also, the SNES had a more modern processor, its hard to compare brute speed, but ram vise there are not that far a part. Whats really drives SNES and Neo Geo a part is the bus, not brute speed. And still Neo Geo outsould CD-I. Saturn, most powerfull? Must be kidding me. It just have a common secondary 32 bit CPU acting like a GPU. Both N64 and PS1 had dedicated hardware GPU:s. The PS1 CPU is both higher clocked and a more efficient architecture than that of the saturn, the N64 is even faster, but this is not a CPU game, its a GPU game. The GPU of the N64 is also faster than both, but remember the PS1 had a 2 year head start over the N64. Also, the N64 had no optical drive, that was a issue at the time. Actually the N64 is as close to the PS1 as it is to the Sega dream cast in relesdate, its almost a 5½ generation. Intrestingly the dreamcast have a simular CPU speed but a bifier GPU.... sure the N64 holds up quite good, but it still lacks the optical drive. The ram numbers is also faulty. The N64 have a unified memory architecture of a total of 4 MB of ram. PS1 have separate memory for every part of the consoles, 2+1+0.5+0.1MB, total of 3,6MB, remember that they are 2 years a part, 3,6MB and 4MB is a very small difference. The PS1 also have a hardware H.261 decoder that offloads the CPU, making it survive on a lower spec CPU Also one more, the N64 had a better GPU, but it waste the GPU performance on filtering and other stuff, so it kind of need it. The plus side is that the N64 games don´t look as ruff, but its a large price to pay. The down side to the N64 is that the games was expensive to make (the actual physical games) Xbox. Well, again, the Xbox CPU is highly clocked, but its not that powerful, just actualy just marginal faster than that of the PS2. The RAM numbers are wrong again. The xbox have unfied memory, 64MB (corect), but the PS2 have separate memory (just like the PS1), 32+4+2+2MB, total of 40MB of memory. In addition to that the Xbox loaded the OS from disk using some ram for that (10 or so Mbytes), (game cube hava a total of 43MB of ram) This is also not a CPU game, this is a GPU game. Comparing the GPU of PS2 and xbox is complicated. The PS2 GPU is half the clock speed but 4 times as wide pixel pipe, so it produces about twice the amount of pixel. On the other hand the texel and vector side is stronger on the xbox. What really makes a diffrance is the band width. On the PS2 is 10GB/s (with a aditional 40GB/s buffer) for the xbox is only 6GB/s, even worse, it is shared with the CPU while PS2 have a additional 3GB/s CPU ram. So even if the GPU and CPU of the Xbox have a slight advantage, the memory bottleneck absolute kills it. But one advantage of the xbox is that it can use larger textures for single objects, making a fiev select objects looking nicer on screen. Also, the xbox was quite expensive and 1½ year after the PS2 (the PS2 was expensive to, but drooped in price when the xbox was released). THe xbox also had a very short life span About the Xbox 360 and PS3 power its even more tricky. In raw CPU power the Xbox is faster, but in streamed CPU application the PS3 is quite a lot faster. Actual both consoles is that fast in streemd applications that the power is useless even today. GPU wise PS3 is faster, and it is a GPU game.. with about a year, and the PS3 was released about a year later. Ram vice the PS3 have 256+256MB and the 360 have 512. Both system run OS from rom. This video is a year old now, but the PS3 was always laging behind the 360, but that was because it was one year later relised, it never cought up before really late. Now the PS3 sold 85 milion units and the 360 sold about 80 million or so. Today wii sold 101 million units... that is not crushing, the statmet is only retarded. The 1:6 sales for the PS2 to xbox is crushing. Conting in that the PS3 and 360 sold for higher prices, wii sold actually for the least amount of money, this is also true for the games. The wii got a lot of hype, but it actually just sold 19% larger number of units than the PS3. Wii sold a lot on the early hype, but after the first two years it sold almost nothing. Since this video bean made Wii sold 2 million units and PS3 sold 15. About the PS vita vs the Nintendo DS, sure the price was almost the same at launch, but the DS launched before and lowered the price to the vita launch to almost half. The vita was really expensive (so was the DS before lowering of the price. To this day PS vita is still more expensive than the DS was at vita (!) launch, almost 3 years later. About hardware, here is the table turned. Here sony have the high clockfrenvensy and unified memory, but low actual performance. Still sure, the vita is more powerfull, but not by the amount most people think. PS vita is just a normal phone hardware chip, with a normal phone screen, with a normal phone battery. Basicly it is just a phone with a controller. Is it powerfull, yes, sure, but that is a phone to. Also, portable consoles don´t work via the same perceptions as stationary, so taking them in to the equation is just plain wrong. Specs don´t sell system.. well that is kind of true, but hyping the specs may. But what mostly sells the system is how god the games is, and graphics is what setts every console generation a part from the previus. So performance is the most important part. If it were not, well, the every body still be using the PS2. Also, HYPE, sells system. Look at the shity wii for example

on the subject of the built in move..... Whenever I play games, even when they don't have motion controls- heck, especially then, I find myself jumping and ducking like it actually matters. having the built in move controller I think is a GREAT addition if they can use it properly, as people will be already used to it so it won't be a foreign mechanic. It could incorporate reflex and movements into the gameplay better, making better games.

Console specs don't matter for console owners; however they matter for PC users. PC users have had graphics held back for years as developers made games for the aging PS3 and Xbox 360 and ported to PC. I'd hoped that with a new generation things might finally progress again, but Sony and Microsoft both released essentially low budget media PC's, dooming us to possibly another decade of graphically underwhelming ports.

I miss these kind of episodes, I wish they would cover the ps5...

There are only 2 reasons why consoles sell, fanboys and exclusives.

The dualshock 3 (and the sixaxis controller) has the sony sixaxis techonlogy in them which allows for tilting the controller and geting output from it. There was that one early ps3 games which used it and was really bad. And since then developers didn't seem to want to use it.

Does this include games bundled with the console itself?
