Flash is amazing! But for studio work, I think constant light is the way to go! In this video, I walk through some key reasons why I built out my home studio with constant lights instead of flash!

My main reason for switching to constant lights was to allow me to seamlessly move back and forth from still to video captures - and video is becoming so important on social media nowadays...

Definitely a solid reason!!

I can see that as a legit use. Out of interest, when using constant are you still eliminating ambient? As in blackout windows, skylights etc

@@Lucy-dk5cz I do try to mostly black-out the studio - my brightest constant light is 600W LED which is very bright- but still no where as bright as my strobes...

@@robertaltman222 right, even a small speedlite will our power a continuous light. And when you are using you 600, what’s your EV like (SS/iso/aperture)?

I think there should be a big asterisk next to the title. Sure there are some use cases where constant are a better choice, but there is many others where it is not. Want to freeze fast moving action? Good luck. Want to use large modifiers far away, also good luck without going into cine level gaf and grip.

Freezing fast moving subjects is definitely better served with flash. But for most portrait work, subjects are barley, if at all, moving. Also, I have a 5 foot double diffused softbox I use on my 600c all the time without an issue.

Happy I came across this as I'm setting up home studio in my double garage and was thinking constant adjustable lighting made more sense than flash and strobes as adjustments would seem quicker to make. Thanks for posting.

Ya!! Especially in a garage where you can easily block any ambient light you dont want. An open garage door also make for an amazing fill light!

Love LED for studio work. I do most of my work traveling though, so I prefer the StellaPro Reflex with clx8 and cl2000. Give a nice portable 3 light setup and I have some small RGB square lights from amazon. Definitely want to see more LED studio based videos!

Im sorry but these photos are too amateurish to justify the cost of these lights. Plus alot of flash modules nowadays have modeling lamps so you can see what your shot will look like without blinding your clients/subjects. The perfect compromise for you wouldve been the Godox FV200, which is a hybrid continous and flash. Not to mention Flashes are more portable and can be powered without wall power easily

I like my photos but thanks 🤷‍♂️ I also have outlets along each wall and no need for these to be portable. I have my flashes for that. Also modeling lights aren't strong enough to really see the inspiration potential I talk about unless you kill all the ambient because a modeling light can't even over power a standard light bulb.

@@Lucy-dk5cz it just appears low because of the constant lights. My space has a 4x4 window in it and I had the blinds open.

@@JasonVinson183 I'm sure you do but the amateurish portion of my comment is referring to how it looked like someone just stood a subject in front of a wall, lit them from an angle and snapped away. Now there is nothing wrong with that but investing $1500 bucks into an aperture 600d and 300, is overkill for what your work entails. Which is why I said a Godox FV200 would be better suited for your needs since it only costs $400, has the continuous light output of an aperture 300d, and still has the flash so you can get that high output to make your subjects pop. And with that money you saved you should invest in other things to make your composition and shots better and more interesting. One example would be a projector for better shapes than a simple gobo

Constant light is not universal and blinds the model. If a person has light eyes, then under intense light the pupil will close, and the eyes will become empty and expressionless.

Pupil reducing in size is widely considered a pro of using constant light because you get more area of color. As for "blinding". Maybe for a moment but the eye quickly adapts. Using an LED is generally less intense than being in cloudy conditions. The eye, even light ones, can be comfortable with LED just fine.
