In Pro/Contra I play devil's advocate and try to find all the reasons for and against a song winning Eurovision. Today we have a look at the current second favorite to win Eurovision 2024: Baby Lasagna with Rim Tim Tagi Dim for Croatia.

As a Bulgarian who moved to Germany as a preteen, this song touches and describes me a lot. Bulgaria isn’t the best at Eurovision, but I hope that Croatia will get its first win 🇧🇬🇭🇷✌🏻

Thank you for such a Nice comment. The beauty of the Baby Lasagna's story is that he wrote and composed the song by himself on his room and shot the official video and prepared the TV performance with his girlfriend and friends on a low budget. A talented and hard-working boy from a small and relatively poor country deserves to win this time.

I might be biased because I like the song (lol) but I think there is a winning moment in the staging. As ridiculous as this sounds, when he jumps on stage, frenetic, energetic, agressive - that's, for me, the winning moment in this song. For other people, it could be the dance break. It's quite fun

I am dutch and would love to see Joost do well but yeah, who can be mad seeing Croatia win. The excitement is infectious. It must feel for Croatia like the year we were potentially going to win with Duncan Laurence. The hype was real and viewing numbers of Eurovision in the Netherlands were through the roof :) And there is hype again this year, but it is different because our last win is not that long ago.

I know that I'm subjective cause it's my own country, but I would personally be so happy if your last words become true. That we win and encourage non participating Balkan countries to come back (Romania🇷🇴, Bulgaria🇧🇬, Montenegro🇲🇪, North Macedonia🇲🇰) and have ESC with like 40 countries. Who could imagine hype like this a few monthes ago? We usually had hype when our football, handball or waterpolo team played in the World Cup, but never for ESC.And I think that ESC from Croatia 2025 would be great cause all country would on big hype and would like to show in the best way. Plus our participating neighbouring countries (predominantly Slovenia 🇸🇮 and Serbia 🇷🇸) would also probably send the best they can in the competition. And big thanks to Martina Tomčić (that's his vocal coach you mention, our opera singer). She already did a great job with his voice.

Absolutely love the point you are making ❤ BL doesn't even need to win but I really love to see other countries in the Balkans coming back. The diversity is part of Europe and I think this need to be celebrated. I hope seeing they can do well with a small budget and dedication will work. I'd love to see Zagreb (or Split ?) 2025 🎉

@@Jakumata Zagreb is right now the only place which could host ESC 2025. It would be amazing to have ESC in Split on the Adriatic cost, but the arena in Split is closed right now,so I think Split is not the option.

If we're thinking about songs winning because of such political reasoning, then what's the show really about? I mean I love the song, I do think it deserves to win on merit alone, but to me it wouldn't feel like a win if it was for any of those reasons. Imagine if Croatia won the world cup in 2018 because they were the underdogs. It was a great story indeed, so many people around the world loved it, but what if the referees unfairly nudged the Croatian team to win? Well the victory would be diminished and meaningless.

Thanks for the great review! 🇭🇷 Baby Lasagna is a wonderful boy, with a great song, and we wish him victory from the bottom of our hearts, because he really deserves it. But however this all goes, the fact remains that he gives his all at every performance, that he is still the same good boy from the neighborhood, he hasn't changed a bit. So he is already a winner for us! We only hope that this will push his career, and that he will give us many more great songs ❤️🇭🇷

I think the winning moment of the song is the chorus after the dance break when his voice gets softer and he gets the audience involved. That part of the performance during the Madrid pre-party was pure magic.

Baby Lasagna may be inexperienced, but he has improved already and he will NOT disappoint! Take our sports teams, for example: remember how they would always get the most strength in the semi-finals and finals, out of nowhere, out of the blue, where they were the greatest surprise? Football is something I have no interest in at all, but made an exception and have watched our team play during the latest two world cups - the whole country, and not only Croatia, but also Bosnia& Herzegovina and Serbia - the whole ex-Yugoslavia actually! - was cheering the players up, everyone was out, crowd gathering in cafés in front of big TV screens everywhere around - the vibe was unbelievably energetic, so good that it had completely transformed the entire country during those few days into an incubator of positivity! The scenes were similar at the previous ESC, when Konstrakta appeared and which I only started following since then. She won all our hearts and was like a bridge that succeeded in bringing people back together, making them forget the differences that divided us and that shouldn't be given attention to at all, because, like Sting said so beautifully, we share the same biology regardless of ideology. So it is in our stubborn Balkanic genes to get up and give our best until the very end, even if chances are nil... Rest assured Marko will too! :)

One pro missing: his song is the only one with only one author: himself. So it was a one man show. Usually these ESC songs have multiple co-authors. Edit: oh, you mention it. Well done. Also, RO with the new system, it might actually benefit you if you perform earlier, in the 1st half. The winning moment could be neon cats in the end, either AR or holograms.

His relationship with the audience is incredible and it was best seen before the parties. I think he won many over there. Reading comments from people who were live to watch it, some from the front row. He was incredible for them and they are delighted with him. I watched it too. He was the best for me too. I like such explosiveness and contact with the audience. It was a pleasure to watch and listen to him, especially in Spain. Regardless of the fact that I'm Croatian, it's the best song for me this year. I don't take it off the repeat, after listening and watching so much, I haven't gotten tired of it yet. Not to mention when I sing woooooo, woooooo, woooooo and dance. Madness. So she's the best. It's the best for me, even though it's a Croatian song. This year it is like that. As a Dutchy i of course want Joost to win, to get the contest back to the Netherlands & to start a proper party, without all the covid restrictions. But if Baby Lasagna would win, i'd be happy! I'd also be happy if Greece won or Ireland or France. I wouldn't even mind France or Switzerland winning. There are so many good songs this year. But the Croatian one is probably my favourite. Even if he doesn't win, he still has an international career in front of him. Look at Joker Out from the last year: they got pretty low place in the final, but they were memorable enough to immediately get a lot of recognition!

I remember someone said that since 1999, every 6 years a new country has won. In 2005 it was Greece, 2011 was Azerbaijan, 2017 was Portugal. Yes 2023 was won by Sweden, however, since 2020 didn’t happen, technically 2024 is now 6 contests after 2017. Maybe this phenomenon will take place again?

If Baby Lasagna won Eurovision, I would be very happy. I agree with the positives you mentionned and it will depend on the performance and if he can charm the audiences. The fact that he's the sole singer-songwriter of his song elevates him in my eyes and I love an underdog and he seems a very nice guy. You know who I'm rooting for but they are a very dark horse, but Baby Lasagna deserves a top 3 and it would be fantastic if a small country could win it. Plus, I like cats too so that's plus. My phone bill next month is going to be astronomical if I'm going to lift the phone for everyone I really really like.

Excellent analysis! Thank you for one more great video. As a Croatian who actually likes our entry, I'm rooting for him. But oh boy, I do hope they get good staging. I'd be ecstatic. However, this year is so effing crazy that I wouldn't mind a few other entries winning. I will say one thing: I don't think juries often appreciate intricacy and originality as much as people think they do, otherwise it'd be a lot easier to predict their points which can be extremely surprising at times. Foul play or a very thought through process? I don't know at this point.

croatia will win if switserland fails to connect with the televote (assuming they do well with the juries) and if the netherlands do significantly worse with the juries (assuming they will do well or even win the televote). overall, i'd give croatia around 30% chance of winning (CHE 40%, NL 20%, ITA 5%, UKR 5%). good luck to croatian fans, as someone who lives in a country that has recently won (NL) i can imagine how excited you are to finally win :)

Honestly the cat lyric is genius - not only does it show, not tell, the relationship cat owners have with their cats (please deign to notice your faithful servant, royal feline), it illustrates the general comfort-seeking he's doing while preparing to leave the country because he's experiencing high anxiety about it AND he's expressing all this with the really, really cute and dryly humorous five words - Meow cat, please meow back. In essence it's cute, funny AND really touching, and so many of us can relate to it.

As someone who left my country and everyone behind - family and friends, I love that lyric, although I am a dog person. When I was leaving I worried the most what our family dog would think once I am gone. Since all others know that and can contact you and are saying goodbye to you but the doggie has no idea where and why you are going. So I fully relate to that lyric!

I think at the very least it seems like HRT won't be sabotaging him like some have suspected (the reason this was a theory is because in 2016 Croatia was high in the odds for a while and then put Nina in that abomination of a dress and had shitty staging in general and a potential win was no more) and the whole performance will be taken very seriously by the delegation.

i think BL can get an winning moment if there were like a smaller platform on the stage, he would take stairs to the top while singing the last "rim tim tagi digi dim tim tagi dim" and then screeching and doing the headshake, it would have a build up and a loud screech would have the power to end with the last "Rim tim tagi dim" thats my thought😬

It shouldn't be that way but it's a closer year this year and so the final draw will make a difference. If Netherlands, Italy and Switzerland find themselves in the first half and he's in the second half he will win without a doubt. He could win anyway.

It's just a song, but the rhythm and positive energy grabs you, you can't resist it, it touches your heart and you feel love. Could it be that a simple song can bring more peace and joy and heal the wounds in a world torn by war and hatred? Hopefully yes ❤ ❤ ❤

The Croatian support could turn into a problem. Seeing how Croatians this year are invested in Baby Lasagna, how a Balcan state hasn't won in a long time (and Croatia has never won after YU) the jury might be tempted to favour the song which, of course, wouldn't be fair. Even I, despite considering Italy, Norway and Belgium much better than Croatia, am tempted to give a vote to Marco who, let's not forget it, appears to be a great guy - and then there's his underdog story too.

Croatia's song is clearly appreciated by many Eurovision' fans but the interesting thing is how ordinary people will vote. Also, he could hypothetically get a bad starting number in the final.

I don’t remember that any Croatian representative was invited for a send of to the host country’s ambassador, like BL was by the Swedish ambassador. *About Kaarja comparisons:* musically, I don't see many similarities between them at all. "Cha Cha Cha" is a heavy rave banger. It may aesthetically borrow from metal a little bit, but it's definitely not. To me, it sounds like something from the latest Dorian Electra album. Croatia this year is straight-up nu-metal. Sure, it's on a more danceable side of the genre, but that's just early Rammstein for ya. *A bit off-topic but:* I'm not a native speaker, but isn't it "to get a message across"? Haven't looked up it in a dictionary, of course, so we would need a native speaker's expertise. However, I've never heard of "to come message across". Frankly, that doesn't bode well with the English language's logic and sounds somewhat jarring. I'm not saying it harshly, obviously, you're not a native speaker as well and I very well may be wrong.

After 2018. I think we Croatians are really getting to be known for kind of support we give when someone is representing our country. No matter if it is about sports or supporting an artist in Eurovision, we celebrate even if our country doesn’t win. ❤️🇭🇷 Even tho I don’t live in Croatia anymore, this song has a special place in my heart and I always carrie my heritage in my heart. Living in Croatia as a Croatian isn’t easy unfortunately. A lot of us leave for better chance in life. But regards, I am very proud to be Croatian and the support we give as a nation is what makes Croatians so beautiful. ❤️ Cats in the video are his, rescued cats. ❤️ Which is even more beautiful!

One must not forget that Croatia's song was a reserve in their selection. 2 out of 4 foreign jury groups in their final did not give him good points. There is a long way to go before Eurovision and you don't know, for example, which stage show different songs will have. Also, the odds can be wrong, sometimes they are.

Oh I am manifesting hard for BL, but would be mad with Nemo as well. ❤ Thanks for your analysis But spilling some bad news I've talked a lot with (german) casual viewers in the last few days and they really dont get the song or over look it, they are more in a Europapa bandwaggon. I am so nervous it will be a nailbiter.

I’m not surprised since Germans are into Joost so they would listen to his song even if it wasn’t a song for Eurovision. Also, I often feel that a lot of casual viewers have tendency to overlook songs from southern Europe. Which is, besides the money problems, one of the reasons we see less of those countries in the contest- if your money is tight you want put it where you don’t believe it can bring you any good - in case of Eurovision the victory.
