I’m curious of how big the roll of receipt tape is, when I worked in retail, putting a new roll in was annoying especially when you were busy. These rolls must be huge!

as far as the impact of paper, it's probably still a net reduction compared to the circulars they were printing.

The problem with the discounts at CVS for retail items is that their prices are so high that the coupon typically just gets the price down to about where it should have been in the first place. I was in CVS picking up a prescription and thought I'd grab a couple bottles of Hydrogen Peroxide. I was kind of surprised to see they were all $3+ a bottle! But, if I went across the parking lot to Walmart the same thing was 99 cents!!! Even with a big discount, you would be likely still be paying more!

I never look at my receipts past the actual items I bought. And only when I think the total may be wrong. I throw all mailed advertisements away in the bin beside the mailbox. In my 59 years of shopping I rarely ever found something that I buy or the sales would be over before the next time I went shipping. The time it takes to save money is not worth it.

The king of ultra long receipts was Fry’s Electronics in Southern California, even for simple items without warranty-especially the multiple copies that went who knows where. I think a part of the reason they went belly-up was the cost receipt paper.

I once got a receipt from CVS that was longer than I am tall. I'm 6'2". All of the coupons were for things I would never need (like feminine hygiene products - I am a male).

One of the problems I have with CVS coupons is that they have very short expiration dates. If you don't use the coupon within a week, it's worthless.

I'm a Walgreens shopper. I opted to go paperless I'm their app so I haven't gotten a receipt from them in at least a year.

Honestly, I try to avoid CVS as much as possible because of those damned receipts. They often don't even let me say 'No thanks' to getting one. I don't need that clutter in my life.

When I found out about the option to email the receipt the next time I was in CVS I asked about signing up. The cashier didn't know it could be done. Thus was about 3 or 4 years ago. He did figure out how to do to it and I haven't looked back. I have my loyalty account linked to my pharmacy prescriptions so whenever I pick up a prescription the receipt is automatically emailed to me. Yesterday I was picking up a prescription and it asked if I wanted the receipt emailed, printed, or both. I notice more and more stores are providing the option to have the receipt emailed.

Here in Portugal, the companies started issuing Customer Cards and, at first, send those coupons via mail. Then, they created an app and discontinued the mail service. People made backlash and they created some software that had a POS in the store so the customer can print the coupons in store. It worked!

CVS should go digital. Make an app and an in-app cash with tabs that detail your deals earned and the things you spent on and the costs. That way, no more paper reciepts.

Having never heard of a CVS before looking at the thumbnail, I guessed that it was so that you couldn't tell what/how much someone bought at a pharmacy

they should just go digital. put a special code on the receipt or something that allows them access to coupons from an app. maybe even link their rewards card to an account that has access to those receipts and pop up prompts on the register when they use it in combination with items being purchased with the option to use the coupon or not.

5:40 Wait, the only reason you think this long receipt is working is CVS' revenue growth? I'm sure there are companies who grew as much or more without having long receipts. Also, many retailers aren't copying the practice so they probably have reasons to believe the CVS growth is not attributable to long receipts, no?

I work at CVS, and there have been countless people who smiled at me and started laughing after getting a 3 foot long receipt. It happens like everyday.

Hello from Austria! Over here circulars are still everywhere. I'm working for a supermarket chain and we still look at how much we made for each item on each page of the circular. Every supermarket chain and other shops have circulars. Sometimes the pack of circulars I get in the mail box weigh over a pound.

I had noticed over the years of buying the Sunday paper just for the store ads, I noticed I was getting less and less coupons. Now the stores are pushing get a card, 'join the store club', and doing coupons that way.

Does CVS track redemption rate? I'd be curious to know how effective it really is?

I get really irritated when I look at the coupons I'm offered on these receipts. They are usually for items I have no interest in and expire in days. I would much rather be asked it I want them or have an option when I signed up for the rewards.

More than once, I told a CVS checkout person that I: Didn't have a CVS discount card anymore & that I Didn't want a receipt because not only were the receipts too long, but they only gave discounts on what I HAD ALREADY BOUGHT!!! The discounts would have expired by the time i would have needed more. Since the pandemic, I note that some stores have a place on the bank card reader for "no receipt". Love it!

In the UK they usually ask whether you want a receipt and only print it if you say yes, and at self service checkouts you have to press a button if you want one. I don't think many people actually get them.

We went to just having the receipts e-mailed. Since we're digitally putting the coupons on our card anyway (vs having to carry around little pieces of paper that we always forgot about) it made a lot more sense. It's also a lot easier if/when I have to submit a receipt for reimbursement; the paper receipts are way too unwieldy to easily get a good picture of both what you bought and the date you bought it.

CVS recently started to roll out the option of getting email receipts. It's right on the screen if you use the self checkout, and if you used a staffed register the cashier will ask. You do have to have an email address on file with them, So far the option does not seem to be available for pharmacy purchases.

Answer: so you won't shop there. I haven't gone in at least 15 years because of this and the overall shabbiness of the store. Like a rundown Rite Aid.

In Europe this stuff wouldn't fly with the customers as they like their companies to be environmentally conscious, and wasting paper is not.

Yall want to check out the receipts in Morrisons in the UK. You can do a weeks shop and receive a receipt around the same size as the convenience store receipt. They also printed any coupons on the reverse for a long while.

While I'm sure there are people enjoying whatever coupons may be present on those mile-long receipts, I shop at my local Walgreens/CVS with some regularity and I make a point of letting them know what they can do with their trash. I'm not the only one either.

Just get rid of all ads, lower prices by 10% and everyone is happy. Well, except the ad industry, but I don't care about them at all.

It just goes to show that the reports of the death of print are greatly exaggerated. Printed media carries a weight and has an impact that digital simply does not. Many people (especially older ones that have more disposable income) prefer a physical item they can hold in their hands.

The best solution I have ever seen is an option for either a printed receipt, an emailed receipt, both, or none. I typically avoid getting receipts for things not business related. Dollar General moved from a single long receipt to a receipt and several smaller coupons which print after.

The circulars go straight from the mailbox and to the recycle bin and the receipts usually go straight from the bag into the same recycle bin if I can't get them digitally.

here in China, convenience stores have their app and you let the cashier scan your own qr code, so all your transactions and discounts and coupons are stored online. No need to waste paper.

I don't live in the US, so I fortunately don't have to deal with these monster receipts. However, receipts from Walmart and the Real Canadian Superstore are probably the worst offenders in my corner of southwestern British Columbia. My local Walmarts, for example, like to print a big graphic at the top of their receipts promoting their "give us feedback, enter to win prizes" thing, and then repeat the same message in text at the end. No coupons wasting space, but their receipts are still _much_ longer than necessary.

I recognized every NYC city block spot they filmed at. I’ve officially lived here too long.

"Continente", a successful supermarket chain in Portugal, does exactly this and it works. Not only brings more people to their stores, but one can actually save a lot of money by cleverly taking advantage of these coupons (both in paper and its digital app).

At 4:20 the voice over says the Loyalty Program is used to assign targetted advertising discount coupons on the receipt. Would it be correct to say that if I did NOT sign up for the loyalty program i could avoid those long receipts? We don't have CVS where I live, but we do have a nationwide department store that does the same thing with their receipts. However, the majority of the people I've seen using the stores do NOT take the receipt unless they just bought an expensive item they think they have to to have a warranty return on. Thus, for general sales items like consumables and other minor items the people go through the register, wave their card at the machine to get the contactless payment registered, then walk off without the receipt when the machine chirps to show the payment is accepted. This happens so often that the staff have stopped calling after people to ask if they want the receipt. The store management are not happy with the huge swathes of the receipts left at the registers, nor do they like the huge pile the cleaners have to regularly clean up after customers throw the long papers on the floor as they walk to the exit. - Clients and local staff complain to the management but they can't get the long receipts stopped. I suspect a lot of it is to do with the extra advertising dollars the stores get from the other company coupons printed on the back of the receipts as well.

Keep the long receipts coming! I appreciate my ExtraBucks and use them every time! They just need to provide us with tiny scissors! 😃

I’m tired of circulars. Every Tuesday I get them and I check between every page for real mail (because one time an important letter got in there) then I walk over to the recycle bin and toss it. It’s a waist of paper. It’s just extra work for the postman that gets immediately thrown away.

I hated those CVS receipts until I started looking at them. It’s been effective at getting me to go to CVS more than I did previously, about every 3rd or 4th visit I get a coupon that could be useful.

When you pay for someting with apple or google pay, would it be possible for the receipts to show up in your wallets app? I think this would be a better option. It would be more convenient and cut down the use of paper.

They still have circulars at the door entry and in the newspaper, they lie about saving trees, the same coupon on every receipt means you have 4 or more copies of the same coupon to purchase 1 product. More trees are being sacrificed, not less. I never shop there. Ever.

I got a store that does the same here, except their coupons print out on a separate printer next to the receipt.

I'd like to remind people to try and not touch or limit their exposure to receipts- the normal heat printed kind. Most contain loads of BPA which is easily absorbed through the skin and has been shown to cause a variety of health problems. Check it out. edit: And DO NOT recycle them. They'll contaminate the recycled paper.

admittedly I never cared for the CVS receipts until I started working there and understood what the receipts were and how to use them and get the kind of coupons you want. When I worked there most people had receipts that could save them over $30-50 on their next visit just by saving 2 or 3 coupons in that receipt and most people would usually ball them up and throw them away (which is why we asked if people wanted them in the bag. most people say yes because they don't have to deal with it). where they get you is that you start buying more without knowing it because you're thinking about the savings you could get. I HATED THE OPT OUT PROCESS! people would get so upset like it was my fault lol. It wouldn't let us move on without certain info and the customer wasn't allowed to type it in themselves in anyway like other stores have with their POS systems so they had to say everything which took forever. Overall though if you pay attention you realize that the coupons cater to what you buy and you buy something often its not going to hurt to keep it. I don't work there anymore but whenever I get a receipt I just quickly look to see if theres anything I want, if not I rip the coupons off and put them in recycling somewhere and if I see coupons I know im going to use then ill rip them off and put them in my wallet so I don't have to remind myself about them and I always remember right when im purchasing them. it can be great savings BUT at the very least id say SAVE your EXTRA BUCKS! they're literally just money that you can use ta cvs. some people throw away some that are worth $10+ . it was always fun to teach customers and see their surprise. like someone would come in with an old receipt and just hand it over saying "is there anything I can use?" and watch in their amazement as I get like $10 off their purchase or more if they do two separate purchases to Geta. few more coupons. those customers are fun. the ones that acted like I mad the decision to have long ass receipts were not. they need an attitude check lol

I mean with the new register update at CVS, you can either print your receipt, get no receipt, or if you pay with credit/debit get it emailed.

Interesting thing is that at BJ's they're receipts can be just as long for a couple of items but there's no coupons or anything on them.

With our local QFC ads are printed on the back of the receipt the size stays the same

oh it gets worse, at the place I used to work the computer would print a receipt for every order that day at closing, even online orders, and we had no use for them; we just set up the trash can right next to the printer and straight in they went

Our supermarket does this on a professional level, without the receipt. They will give you the option of 20 personal discounts of which you can choose 5 in their app every week.

When I go to my local CVS I get those super long receipts. The longest one was over 3ft. Some of the coupons are good others I forget about.

For years I've had the email receipt. For the past couple months they've started asking me how I want my receipt, which just adds to the time to complete my checkout.

I think most stores in Denmark as this point will ask you if you want your receipt, and if you say no, they won't print it. If you want to join the targeted advertising bonus program thing, you get a piece of plastic with a barcode on it, that you can put on your keychain (or of course, nowadays they have apps). It probably doesn't convert as well as receipts in cultures where keeping the receipt is commonplace, but it seems much more responsible. Until you get to the self-checkout things where you need the receipt to exit the store, and they of course make sure to print you an extra long one to compensate for the ones the cashiers aren't printing...

Is the Opt-out so hard to find? I set it up on my app, and now whenever I enter my phone number it just emails me a receipt. Haven't gotten a CVS receipt in years now. I didn't feel like it was that hard unless you don't want to download the app.

5:50 The paper used in making the super long receipts is still less than the paper used to make circulars when you consider that half of the people who receive the circular won't even go to the store.

Here in the UK I'm seeing an opposite trend. Many stores have made the receipt optional, they ask the customer if they want the receipt. Some convenience (their convenience) stores plainly give no receipt at all. One big chain of supermarket attach to the receipt a printed coupon for a discount for their overstock. In total, here in the UK the trend is to save an half penny on the receipt. All supermarkets provide weekly circulars, but they don't force them on the customers. They don't include coupons though, only advertising for their wares. Coupons and yellow stickers have virtually disappeared, soon after the social media frenzies of people living on heavy couponing and eating only yellow sticker food; the coupons and yellow stickers (example: food items at 80% discount after 18:00 on Wednesday) weren't meant to be used with such intensive patterns. Regarding CVS: I believe a receipt with a lot of coupons is ok - as long as the coupons are for fast selling, current items and not for not-selling, overstock items. The paper waste you point to, the billions of uprooted trees and millions of smoking cars are a poor excuse that nobody buy, because those trees are grown and rotated in nurseries and cultivations, earmarked for paper production.
