Sabotaged is a harsh word. D'Angelo took a step back, sorted out his demons, let go of unrealistic body standards, and bossed up on his mental health. Then he got back to music on his own terms. Good for him 👏🏽

Would hardly say he sabotaged his career. The music industry life span of an artist is 3-5 years. If an artist lasts longer than they definitely have other business or deals outside of music. It's like saying Ms Lauryn Hill sabotaged her career but real artists see the industry for what it is and move accordingly.

When DeAngelo came out with his first album Brown Sugar ( a Masterpiece btw) I was so surprised on how young he was 19 y.o, because he sang like old Soul. I didn't see his music like Neo Soul but more like Old School R&B such as Legend's like Stevie Wonder, Prince, Marvin Gaye, and Curtis Mayfield. Although his wrestled with his Demons it's so Awesome how he risen from the Ashes. God Bless you D such a Amazing Artist.

D'Angelo could've been a mega star lady and Devils pie was my joint back in the day.D'Angelo is a classic example of a musical artist who struggled with his identity because everybody try to put his music in a box and he didn't know which direction to turn to.He's a prime example of he was trying to be something that he wasn't and didn't want to be he wanted to be just a musical artist not the sex symbol that everyone made him out to be and it started to overshadow his career along with the struggles to write music and perform music.

I remember my Mom, who’s a huge D’Angelo fan, telling me about seeing him live around 9 times during his Lady, Devils Pie, How does it feel days. She said everytime she saw him live, some of the women AND men who came to his shows would be super disrespectful and nasty. They would be grabbing at his meat when he’d lean in to sing to a woman in the audience. She said one woman as far as to grab at his pants and start ripping at it to try and get him naked during his “How does it feel” set… Disrespect is disrespect, regardless of gender. I could understand wanting to dip away from a fan base of both casual and day 1 fans who really just see you as piece of meat there to be devoured. That can fuck with your brain and cause you to lose out on great opportunities because you’re having anxiety from performing. I hope D’Angelo is doing better and took time away to work on his mental health and manage his stressors better. 🙏🏾

Why y’all do D’Angelo like that!?! Many of us are familiar with his struggles, but it would have been nice if you didn’t breeze over his redemption like it was nothing. I seen D’Angelo live when he released his album Black Messiah and he still looked fine as ever, vocals were on par with the sound we’ve come to recognize, and his musicianship was something to be admired jumping from instrument to instrument on stage like he does in the studio. That album and a song from the album garnered 2 Grammys in 2016.

@J-Hue
@J-Hue Жыл бұрын
It's not always purely about the ability to handle success, although at times that is a big part of the problem. There is a lot of evil that goes on behind the scenes in these industries and the higher you get, the more difficult it can be to keep your toes clean. Some people don't want their spirits to become tarnished so they separate from that life and from the desire to be the biggest act they can be because even that desire is often heavily rooted in lust, the desire to be lusted after, and just vanity in general. In this day and age, it's all the more difficult to maneuver the game and not fall victim to the more destructive elements.

I love this channel comedy hype because you always give shine to people that the entertainment business may have forgotten but they are real legends you guys really put it down for talented black folks much respect comedy hype! and I love what D'Angelo said about not wanting to be put in a box entitled a neo Soul artist that's understandable because any artist wants to be unlimited to go wherever their creativity and imagination takes them like me for instance I'm a filmmaker I just completed an action film but I'm working on a love story and I may do a comedy after that no creative artist wants to be boxed in so I totally get where D'Angelo is coming from and also any creative no matter what medium they work in are always trying to find a way to connect with the audience and a fan and once you find a way you want to stick with it but if the way that you connect with the audience is a gimmick such as D'Angelo's getting in shape then he's going to doubt whether it's his talent or his body that's attracting people but in his case I think people looked at it more like he was just leveling up from brown sugar and growing such as when Marvin Gaye used to sing with Tammi Terrell and he sounded pretty good but once he came back with what's going on he had a beard he looked different and his vocals were even stronger it was like a leveling up and I think D'Angelo may not have understood that because he is looking at it from a different angle than everybody else is he's looking at it from the aspect of his talent and the responses that he is getting from brown sugar to voodoo so yeah you have to be a creative to understand where he's coming from 👍🏾

I hope and pray 🙏🏿 D'Angelo gets the help and support he needs to be successful in life. I loved his music abilities but I also loved him as a human ❤️ maybe he will feel good enough to come back with some more amazing music and songs but if he doesn't I would like for him to keep on living a healthy life. Glad he's still here.

D’Angelo is Top 2 And ain’t 2. Truly one of the Best Artist to Grace our ear waves Seriously Grateful for what he’s done for music On a more serious note Hyper-visibility can be very overwhelming especially when your natural disposition is introversion. And common people have a hard time genuinely believing talented individuals are introverted so the demand for the artist to “become” their art is always pressing at their identity It’s like hearing “We miss the old you” Or “You changed” Which is really some entitled bullshit and people really need to stop doing that but I digress . . Anyways Much love for him Will keep him PRAYED UP and if he had a concert I know me and my best friend would be right there saaaaangn’ along 😂😂😂

He went through the same thing that artists like Doja Cat is going through. Once you create an image and style that appeals to the masses and sells records, the labels make you a slave to that image, which is usually not really them or it's something they just wanted to do for that time. Artists have to realize that what you put out there, that's what people will want and expect because a lot of people are not that bright. They can't tell fantasy from reality, nor can they appreciate real art and artistry because they stay swimming in their lower natures.

... i am very happy about this video...i remember very well about his problems and i smiled to myself...he is ambivalent about the music industry...and the industry returned the energy....he wanted it...but didn't want what came with it...everyone did their jobs...except him....everyone handled their business with him...he is just too sensitive to do the same...i hope he has found peace within himself and he continues his career...he is an amazing talented man....however DISCIPLINE...is the oil that makes the talent run....

So sad to hear about the fights he had with his self-image and his need to single handily change the music industry and the way people see artists and purchase music. I thought the 'how does it feel' video, felt like a literal piece of art. The music, the video photography, and the subject (D'angelo), were perfect! Someone just needed to remind him that attractiveness alone in the music industry doesn't get you anywhere, it's the true, raw talent of the performer that people pay and stay for.
