Manchester United made a subtle difference to their approach during their recent 3-2 loss to Arsenal in the Premier League. The game seen Lisandro Martinez taking goal kicks back to David De Gea, to have him begin the phase of play.
There has been a quiet rise of defenders taking goal kicks this season, but what is the benefit of this and how does it have an affect on the game state? Jon Mackenzie is here to discuss this approach and his favourite subject - pressing!

I noticed this in their first leg league Cup semi final against Forest. The ball being at the keeper's feet in the box, rather than at a defender's feet in the box, seemed to put Forest off from pressing. Weird
@felixbache5369

yeah, it is kind of crazy. I think it's because usually when you're pressing, instinctively you're trying to get the defenders to pass it back to the keeper so he can either make a mistake or kick it long. But when the ball is already at the keeper's feet you just have to mark the defenders and everytime you're trying to press the keeer you're leaving a defender or midfielder open to receive the pass. Or you have to push every single player up the pitch, which is a huge risk.

This ironically goes along with Tifo’s De Gea vid about his weaknesses and why the modern keeper needs to be great on their feet to help build up from the back. When the keeper is involved, you get the extra 11th player vs the other teams’ 10 outfield players to fight against any defensive press.

Arsenal also often take goal kicks this way, but they kick it long quite often too. So the tactic seems to work, but it depends on your players, the opposition, and the game state.
@ryan123pop

Back then, some players are not built for this play style. Ten Hag had to change to long ball since players like De Gea and Eriksen are not comfortable at first phase of build up. They improve now but still lack a lot especially against the teams that press really high like Arsenal. You can see with how Arsenal scored their first after winning the ball from AWB since he is so bad at building up but it can be argued that it was De gea's bad pass decision putting him in danger in the first place. Also, Dalot may not be good as him in defending 1vs1 but his technical ability and passing is so important if we want to play out from the back.

In the Brentford vs United game, there were a few small details that I remember being contrary to the images shown here. Brentford had two strikers who sat in between cb and full back and a third midfielder who pushed up on Eriksen in the midfield pivot role. Arsenal play a 4231/4141 so the striker stays central in the first stage rather than the two forwards Brentford had inbetween Centre and Full back. Also, Brentford play a back 3 so that long ball option was well covered and United did not have the aerial threat to use that outlet against Brentford, as they did against Arsenal in Weghorst. Finally, United were trying to play it centrally before a switch to the full back/another midfielder against Brentford, here against Arsenal they play it to the full back before playing a direct through pass down the wing (an area where it takes longer for any potential turnover in possession and counter to take place).

Tbf for the Arsenal away game United were missing Dalot, Casemiro and Martial all of which seem to get the system. Was just unfortunate timing for playing the best team in the league atm. Game was always going to be close, fine margins & Arsenal were even better than I was expecting. Still nearly came away with something & played well all the same. After the City result I thought a win was possible and for 60min I thought it was, but Arsenal were relentless towards the end, and we struggled to get into their box. I think fatigue affected United a bit more, but again fine margins. Looking forward to the next time United play them. They're a hell of a challenge

If you watched the first few of games of Everton's season, he played really well, and scored a couple of really good goals against Brentford and Leeds. This was just before the end of the summer transfer window when Chelsea bid for him. I think a lot of clubs are banking on the fact that he lost motivation when a deal to top club didn't go through. His wages are only around 13 k p.w (and this is *after* he signed a new deal with Everton after that window), so that could have contributed to his loss in form. I don't personally think he's worth that kind of money, and seems to have had some attitude issues as well.

Nah, the risk of leaving the net open will always outweigh any advantage that a GK in the outfield will give. Even with a completely capable ball-playing GK, when the opposition can score from a single midfield turnover, it's just not worth it. While De Gea sucks at distribution, let's not forget that he also barely has any presence in the box, not claiming enough crosses and corners, at best just flapping or punching them away. All these reasons point to him potentially being demoted to a number 2 GK next season if Ten Hag actually gets financially backed by the board to sign a top-class modern sweeper GK.
@ryan123pop

De Gea's distribution is definitely not good enough despite the improvement he has made for United to play out from the back. Same goes to AWB with his technical ability too. Modern football is no longer for a player to be one-dimensional anymore. Will also need an elite ball carrier CM too since Eriksen is not good enough for the first phase of the build up. Should be a rotational especially starting against the lower team since we can easily skip to the second phase of build up where he is the best at it. Werghost though has been so good so far from what I see. I would like United to sign him permanently as a back up if possible.

De Gea is poor with his feet as well. A Keeper who actually could captilise on this would show its benefit. Turning on the ball, changing direction. really trying to throw off attackers press.
