Learn exactly how to respond to the dental school interview question, "why dentistry?" and "why not medicine?" with Joel. This is a very common dental school interview question, and one you should be prepared for. If they ask you why do you want to be a dentist, you better be prepared with a good response.
In this video I discuss some of the most rewarding aspects of being a dentist, and also some of the less glamorous parts. I also talk about the follow on question, "why not medicine" or some other position in healthcare. And at the end of the video I talk about what goes into a rewarding career and why dentistry is a great fit for many people.

Throughout out my entire life I thought I wanted to be a physician. This pandemic really made me think much more about the future and now I'm leaning more towards dentistry. All the points you mentioned in the video made me realize that dentistry is definitely a better fit for me!

My reason for dentistry was instant gratification. I love being able to help and get my patients out of pain in less than an hour of work. Follow up calls where they say how happy they are and how they can eat dinner makes me so happy. I’m a dental assistant now but I’m on predental track in college right now.

I love watching your videos, you described perfectly why I chose dentistry! The smile and mouth is super important and is the first thing most people see so it definitely effects one’s confidence; knowing I can help people feel better about themselves like someone helped me, is what I ultimately want.

Thank you for making this video it is really helping me decide what I want to do with my life. I am currently accepted to medical and dental school and my father owns a dental practice. The first statement is simply not true. Dentistry and medicine are deeply different, yet with many overlaps.

Is it wrong to say that you want to specialize in orthodontics and that is specially why I want to be in dentistry is to give people smiles? Is it ok to say that you want to specialize in your interview?

As a general rule, I don't think you should say in an interview that you specifically want to do one speciality. You can say you're very interested in ortho, and that's something you want to explore more in dental school. But saying you want to go into dental so you can become an orthodontist can sometimes come across as naive. What happens if you don't end up with the grades to get into ortho? What happens if you realize you don't like ortho? Then you're in dental school, and you better like general dentistry too. TL;DR: my advice if you're into a speciality is that it's fine to bring up your interest, but don't oversell that you just want to do this specialty :)
