Devo is the greatest punk band of all time. There, I said it. I know this is subjective, but the older I get the more I appreciate their FU attitude and DIY aesthetic. That's why Devo will ALWAYS be my pick for best punk band of all time. Do you have a pick for the best punk band ever? Come on, vinyl community! Let me know in the comments. Me...? I'm sticking with Devo!
Mark recently battled serious health issues, and it inspired me to do an episode about the beloved Devo of my childhood. I'm overjoyed that Mark has since made a full recovery and will be creating more fantastic music for years to come. There's lots more info below on all the Devo albums, but to me Devo will always mean their "classic-five" line-up of Mark, Jerry, Bob1, Bob 2 and Alan. Long live Devo!

Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo - This debut LP by the boys from Akron was wholly unlike anything else on the scene at its time of release, as befits a brand of music cooked up by art-minded gadget-freaks practicing in a basement ten hours a day. You may think these fellas aren't serious, but it takes serious dedication to play a hostile club and to keep repeating the call-and-response chorus from Jocko Homo for fifteen minutes until the audience literally comes onstage to fight you! This album made it to number 12 in the UK, but only 79 in the US, which is actually impressive considering how many musical barriers they had to break through.
amzn.to/32cM2lG
Duty Now For The Future - Songs like Clockout, Timing X, Blockhead and S.I.B. finally get professional-studio treatment, and the results are exciting. The boys blamed Ken Scott for what they deemed a rather lightweight sound, but you can take that with a grain of salt, given how uncompromising this entire album sounds. The Day My Baby Gave Me A Surprize is a Hollis Hot Pick!
amzn.to/2RbxtJ2
Freedom Of Choice - This is the album that allowed Devo to crossover, giving mainstream music lovers everywhere a true freedom of choice. Side one is a perfect side--but don't sleep on side two's Gates Of Steel, which is one of my top five Devo songs. It was released as a single with my beloved Snowball on the other side. Neither side was marked with a letter, allowing listeners to use their freedom of choice on which was the A side!
amzn.to/35lt0LP
New Traditionalists - Devo concerts for this album saw the boys wear their "Utopian boy scout uniforms," but they might as well have performed in body armor given how confrontational their message was on Through Being Cool. The song was also used to great effect in the animated movie Heavy Metal. Some of the greatest Devo concerts available are from the shows on this tour, especially Live 1981 Seattle.
amzn.to/33eDgD1
Oh, No! It's Devo - More synth, less guitars, same infectious results. Patterns is my favorite deep cut on this album. Then again, it's hard to call anything else a deep cut when one of the other songs on the album, I Desire, credits gunman John Hinckley as a co-writer.
amzn.to/3m6LO7B
Shout - As I said, I'm not the biggest fan of Shout, but I love what they did to Hendrix on R U Experienced. You've got to hear it...
amzn.to/3jUM5su
Total Devo - This album is slightly better than I lead you to believe in the episode, thanks to Baby Doll, Happy Guy and Some Things Never Change; but it had trouble overcoming both the absence of Alan Meyers and a pedal-to-the-metal 80s production gloss that made these songs sound way too much like the mainstream music they were ridiculing.
amzn.to/2GMBCRB
Smooth Noodle Maps has its moments (Post Post-Modern Man, Mountain Dew, A Change Is Gonna Cum), and the entire Something For Everybody LP is a strong return to form for the band, but the albums made by the Classic Five will always have a special place in my heart. That said, pick up Something For Everybody. It's really good...

I think there’s a legit argument that DEVO are the greatest band the US ever produced. They have it all, and in spades. Their concept could’ve continued on eternally devolving alongside the rest of the human race. They were all amazing players that put so much into a performance that they put all other live bands to shame. And, the songs were simply perfect, so minimal, leaving no room for noodling of any kind. Best band ever.
@PopCultureGraveyard

You make a great case! On concept alone, no other band can touch them. It's so rare that anyone in music is against anything these days. Devo's got fire inside of them, as critical thinkers mocking mankind's regression. And being that mankind is currently regressing faster than ever, they are more relevant than ever. And you're right regarding the band not given to noodling: Gerry said that when the band played Hey Hey My My with Neil Young, it was the first and last time they'd ever "jammed." They're big fans of repetition, but never noodling. Thanks for the comment!

Many DEVO fans agree woth me that Duty Now is the best Devo album. Dark, claustrophobic, psychedellic and eclectic and very very DEV-O. Your comments about Alan Myers are spot on! Criminally underrated. I put him right up there with Stewart Copeland in terms of phenomenally good drummers with a very distinct sound and approach. Devo losing Alan would have been like the Police losing Copeland: A death blow, really.
@PopCultureGraveyard

You just named another of my all-time favorite drummers! Yes, love Stewart and that analogy about the Police losing him totally fits. Both he and Alan added technical elements and creative flourishes to songs that other drummers wouldn't/couldn't. And yes, Duty Now definitely separates the true Devo fans from the rest of the pack. It's got a special place in my heart. Thanks so much for stopping by. Always nice to meet a fellow Devo-tee!

You are right on about Alan. DNftF showcases everything that is unique and uniquely punk rock about his approach to drumming. Typical punk drummers (god bless 'em) are incredibly conformist and limited. Alan knew those rules well enough to deconstruct and subvert them.

@@PopCultureGraveyard A good Drummer is an individual with their own unique style. You don't have to play Drums in a well known or world famous Band to have a unique sound or style. I've had Drummers come up to me after a gig I've played and asked me where I learnt how to play like that. They also say " Geez, you hit them very hard" A lot of Drummers are self-taught and discover how to play in ways that other Drummers can't. I've always found it impossible to replicate some of the Drumming of The Police and DEVO. When the Drumming switches from the ON beat to the OFF beat halfway thru a Bar of music it can be very difficult, especially if it's out of your natural style or 'comfort zone'. Other Drummers are easy to 'read' as in "Gimme Shelter" Rolling Stones RIP - Charlie Watts

Haha, I love that you brought up the 3-DEVO tour! I believe every great band should have one "Spinal Tap Stone Henge moment," and that was Devo's. The funny part is, when you view that tour film at home, it seems fine. It was only the people who watched it live that were subjected to any of the video/audio glitches. And there were only two songs (Speed Racer and Big Mess) where the mistakes were obvious. And the two set lists are killer! They not only played Patterns, but it was the only time they played Explosions live. Interesting history is right! Thanks for the comment!

I've been a Devotee since way back in 1979! I remember actually thinking that Devo were going to be PHENOMENAL - one of the major defining groups of the 1980's - along with others like Talking Heads, B 52's, Blondie, Ultravox, OMD, Split Enz, Gary Numan, X, Black Flag, Bauhaus, Sonic Youth, Concrete Blonde - and THAT had me looking forward with great interest and excitement to the then new oncoming decade! But, sadly, THAT was NOT how it turned out. That decade eventually became dominated by ohhhhh Micheal "King of Pop" Jackson, Madonna, Huey Lewis, U2, Prince, Phill Collins, Def Lepard, Kenny Loggins, Bon Jovi whom the masses decided they preferred to have as their big music icons, and by the end of that decade Devo were forgotten and, worse still, from a historical standpoint got officially relegated to "One Hit Wonder" status thanks to the likes of VH1, MTV, these Watch Mojo jerks and Swiffer & Cool Whip commercials! Yep, what a pathetic and nauseating disappointment THAT decade turned out to be! Oh well, looks like they're being recently rediscovered thanks to You Tube, so then maybe there's still hope for them yet!

Growing up near Akron, Oh., in the 70's and 80's, DEVO was the ultimate rebel band. With the second British invasion syncing up with the American underground scene, admitting a love for DEVO automatically put you in the weird new wave sub-group of the social hierarchy of high school...and we were proud to be those freaks. We knew what DEVO was trying to say about the state of the world at the time. We were in on the joke. For my senior prom ('84), my friends and i were able to get enough votes from the other seniors to get "Whip IT" as the number 3 song of our class list. My favorite album is the New Traditionalist. "Beautiful World" is my all time favorite song. Please y'all, pressure the Rock/Roll hall of fame to get DEVO in.

Saw last show of the 50 years of De-Evolution Tout and the band still has that edge that made me a DEVO fan. The concert was a gritty, sonic filled show of nostalgia, new song arrangements and self-deprecating humour. DEVO was my go to band throughout my life, owning their albums on multiple formats. The Whip It 45 single has one of my favourite songs on the B-side, Turn Around, which is a great example of the combining cynicism and satire in their lyrics and delivery.

Even Rolling Stone magazine has "Are We Not Men?" on its greatest punk rock albums list. One thing that's an acquired taste (& I acquired it) is Neil Young's movie "Human Highway". Most eerie is Devo playing "Ohio", considering they were witnesses to the actual Kent State Massacre.

They really make it worth watching. Yes, that Ohio/Kent State/Devo connection is surreal and meta and bizarre--and a million other things. I love that Neil recognized how special Devo was. And Neil's way of showing love is jamming with them--the first time Devo ever "jammed" according to them.

There is a very interesting connection between Neil Young with both PUNK and GRUNGE. kzfaq.info/get/bejne/mdKCYK57vdGbdI0.html NEIL YOUNG AND DEVO - Hey Hey, My My (UNCUT) Every now and then, parallel lines crossover. I'm a massive fan of Neil and DEVO. Though, like thousands of You Tube watchers, I'm wildly amazed and shocked at their collaboration. I think that a lot of musicians view Neil as a ground breaking maverick. Pearl Jam worship Neil. Suzi Quatro plays " Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" in her LIVE set. I was at one of Suzi's gigs many years ago and was struggling to recognize the intro to the song they started playing. I was thinking " This isn't a Quatro song" No, it was " Keep on Rockin' in the Free World" Suzi and her Band played it, full on, for 10 minutes or more. Suzi is the QUEEN of ROCK n ROLL after all. The definition of what PUNK is, can be very broad or very narrow. PUNK is actually an attitude. Some Bands and artists are pigeonholed as an Electronic Band, like The Residents, yet I class them as PUNK. Rock Band STATUS QUO have so much attitude that they don't give a rats' arse what you think, some music critics have classed them as PUNK. Have a listen to "Is it Really Me/Gotta Go Home" (Lancaster) - 9:34 from Ma Kelly's Greasy Spoon the third studio album by English rock band Status Quo, 1970. At last, someone who rolled it all together. You UNDERSTAND Devo. Here's something else, which you hinted at throughout: while they were a mirror of the de-evolving human race, they were also presenting, however obtuse, an alternative to this problem. Their "answer," as I see it, was true creativity. Anyone can make fun of conformity or hippies, or religious people, and DEVO did that well. But they balanced the contempt with creativity...truly wonderful and sometimes even moving music. It's no accident that Mark is one of the most sought-after composers today. He isn't just saying how stupid everyone is; he's making the world better with amazing , inventive music. So that's it. Like their cover of Secret Agent Man, they can mock and pay tribute all at once. No wonder so many were confused. And remain so. You GET DEVO, as Henry Rollins said. Bravo to you!

Thank you, my friend! Always nice to meet a fellow die-hard Devo fan. And it's very true--Devo both poses the question and delivers to answer (to those who listen). They're such a complex, artistic expression that most people being skewered actually think they're in on the joke. I think it's the band's sense of humor--that sardonic spoon full of sugar--that keeps Devo from coming across as mean spirited. One good thing about Devo always being ahead of their time is they're aging SO much better than most bands. Future generations will envy us for having them around.

When i heard Devo for the first time in 78, i knew that the current music scene would never be the same again. Devo was the perfect thing to appear to counter balance the otherwise terrible music common in the mid to late 70s. I was so relieved and excited to hear this music. We are Devo!

YES. I bought my first DEVO album while on a high school field trip downtown around 1992-93. We dipped into a independent record store called Raven Records. I saw Devo's Greatest Hits and memories of Whip It ( I was 6 when it came out) came flooding back. I bought it on cassette. All my friends made fun of me (into NIN, Front242, alternative and hard rock) I mocked them back saying that Devo was kicking ass over a decade ago. My friends looked like a bunch real spuds when the boys of de-evolution played lallapalooza a few years later.

I was born in 1977. "Whip it" was the first song that i can remember, and it was my favorite song. (i come from a very musical family, and got into music at a VERY young age.) Devo has always been near and dear to my heart. I think their most punk song is "Penetration in the centerfold". In my early adult years, we used to drop LSD and listen to "Mechanical Man" and other songs, over and over. good times, great memories.

Fantastic video about one of my favorite bands! I think my favorite DEVO album is New Traditionalists followed by Duty Now For The Future. I had the pleasure of seeing them live in Boston back in 2008 and I still have the smiley faced bouncy balls Boogie Boy threw out into the audience 😂

Definitely a legit favourite punk band by any standards. My teenage days punk compilation cassettes were full of DEVO alongside The Dickies, Ramones, Dead Kennedys, and from over here The Stranglers, The Damned, The Buzzocks, The Clash. They were a natural part of my punk youth. I'm an old man with an old van now anfd my vinyls are allblong gone but the Micro SD card currently in the cab happens to have a bunch of DEVO mp3s on it...

I'm glad I found this video. I have been trying to convince people that DEVO is a punk band for many years. Great video mate. You have a slightly different take on some of the music than I do but I couldn't agree more that DEVO are true punks. Greatest ever? I'm not sure. Is there another band that is more punk? I don't know of any.

Thanks a lot, Danny! Devo's punk as hell. And it's always nice to hear from a fellow Devo fan. I'm not surprised we have different takes, as Devo's catalog is so rich and varied, we all have our favorites. Welcome to the channel!

Thanks for running through each album's highlights. I have about five of the albums, but didn't have Duty Now For The Future, Oh No! It's Devo, Smooth Noodle Maps, or Something For Everybody. I thought I was covered since I had the compilation Pioneers Who Got Scalped, which has many of the essentials, but now I have to complete the collection. I agree with you: technically, they may be considered a one hit wonder, but they've got dozens of great songs. And Fountain of Filth is a great find, thanks for that.

Loved the video! Would have been super happy to hear you discuss more about Hardcore Devo 1 & 2. They ended up getting decent distribution under Rhino, and have some wonderful tracks. A bit like Black Dots by Bad Brains, they have some of my favorite stuff from Devo. I saw both above mentioned bands in the 2000s, which I never thought possible. Both at House of Blues venues in California, actually.

What a great analogy, Lee! HD1&2 are totally like Devo's Black Dots--really early tracks before Devo became what Devo would become, yet in many ways it's more pure. That's awesome that you got to see them both, but I'm shocked that House of Blues booked anyone that cool. Thanks for the comment!

I’m just now coming across this video 3 yrs later. But the info is ageless. Finally someone is saying what I’ve been saying since day one. I’m old enough to have lived the DEVO era from first Lp to today. They are my favorite punk band next to Plasmatics. Yes very far apart but yet just as contraversual at its time. My first DEVO concerts was in 1982. I was blown away when Mark M came down the balcony of the theater on a rope. That’s how they kicked off that show. Definitely best punk band ever! Thank you for validating that. 🔥

Wow! What a fantastic, passionate analysis of Devo! You are a true Spud Boy! As far as my own feelings on Devo, I have to say that in the beginning, I wasn't a fan. I heard Jock Homo and a couple of other songs at the time and just kind of dismissed them as weird. But then I saw the video of "Can't Get No Satisfaction" and was enamored with both the music and the visuals! It was GAME ON for me at that point! I started buying everything and anything that had to do with DEVO! I also started turning people on to their music. My mother even liked them! I got the message they were trying to convey and I gained a new respect for their virtuosity, their synchronization and their humor! One of my Generals on my computer game of Risk, is General Boy, and he wins a lot! Now I'm 68 and STILL a Spudboy, lookin' for that real tomato! Thanks for putting up the video; Great job!

Definitely top 10 for me! When I discovered "Are We Not Men" this album blew me away. I cranked album so frequently in the 80s that when I found it on CD, upgraded my car car stereo and blasted as I cruised up and down the boulevards in Honolulu. Midwest punk! If these were playing in cities like N.Y. or London, they'd HOFers all day. Favourite song Girl U Want!

Yes! They've got to be a top ten band for me as well. You're totally right that coming from a smaller city like Akron hurt them attention wise--BUT it's only because they came from a small city that they were able to cocoon for so long and develop such an amazingly unique sound before reaching the masses. GUW is a great song, I think my favorite (these days at least) is Social Fools. Thanks for the comment!

For for the Q: Are We Not Men tour stop in Santa Cruz, we customized our own Devo hazmat suits and ended up swapping our suits for theirs. Then they came to our house for a party. Mothersbaugh played DJ, or so my girlfriend at the time tells me. We were assured Devo wore our suits on stage the next night in San Francisco. By any measure it was a very memorable evening. Excellent summing up here, by the way. Thanks !

Devo is so great that even their crummy stuff is great. I´m a huge fan since 1984. However, the very first song I heard was That´s Good, which I didn´t give much attention. It took 2 years until Working in the Coalmine and Through Being Cool introduced me to the fascinating devolved universe of Devo.

Yes! Devo is the greatest punk band of all time and I have been a fan for over 40 years. It is a sad fact that the very same thing that Devo is warning from us, the de-evolution, has been the greatest obstacle for them to get the appreciation they deserve. Just like you said, most people just don't get it. Devo is not a humour band or a party band, it is a punk band. I really like the song "Devo was right about everything" by Attery Squash which was later mixed by Devo. It kind of says it all. And that was made at the GWB era after which we have seen even more spectacular evidence on de-evolution. Keep up the good work. Loved your B-52's video also!

Very well said! I can't believe in the times we're living in that it's even debatable anymore whether or not devolution is real. That Attery Squash song is amazing! WE'RE ALL DEVO! Love your take on DEVO, they are definitelymore punk than most of the acclaimed punk bands. I am a DEVO fan ever since i saw them on SNL in 78. Went out & bought Q: Are We Not Men? A: We Are Devo! and have never looked back. Saw the Duty Now for the Future (in Boulder and Denver) & New Traditionalists (at the Fabulous Forum w/ them walking on treadmills through the whole show 🤯) tours. I LOVE the distorted Chi Chi album cover, but I'm a golfer so it totally grabbed me.
