Why did men and women's silhouette's begin to change in size and shape in the sixteenth century? What led to the famous Elizabethan silhouette?
In this video I explain why sixteenth century fashions looked the way they did and why iconic garments of the sixteenth century - ruffs, doublets, farthingales, codpieces and wired sleeves - came about.

I prefer longer videos but a mix sounds good

@@feliciasjoberg9886 thanks for your feedback and for watching! I think I might do a mix of both long and short. Shorter format like this tends to be a little easier to do (eps once semester is back and I’m teaching again!), but I have along ones planned too 😊

They're fine. I like them. You skillfully pack a lot of knowledge in a short span.

Personally, my favorite KZfaqrs are the ones who do “talking head” videos and intersperse photos throughout their lecture/lesson.

Absolutely! I also prefer them to be around fifteen minutes or less, so I can watch several in the time I have.

I like this KZfaq channel because I think the 17th and 16th century clothes are under appreciated

The short videos are a great way to keep people engaged with your channel! They also help more people find your longer videos. This is my first time viewing your content, and I'm going to watch your Bodies and Stays video after posting this comment! Also, I think your audience includes people who would love to hear you give an hour long talk on cotton, or sumptuary laws, or Chantilly Lace, etc.

Thanks so much for your feedback! I think I will continue to try to do a mix of both long and short videos (the latter being easier for me to do when the teaching semester gets busy). I’m planning videos on sumptuary laws and Indian cottons/silks, so definitely keep an eye out for those too! :)

I am really curious what these fancy outfits would have looked like in real life. All of the portraits are highly stylized and it is possible that the artists added elements to the clothing for symbolic purposes that did not exist in real life.

I would watch both long and short.

Question: If you look at the silhouettes and body shapes of both men and women at at this time, it appears that the men are also wearing a form of stays which are conical in shape but which protrude the belly and pull back the shoulders. The female stays in general, although conical seem to be flatter especially at the belly (excluding pregnancy), and this makes me wonder about men's stays because it's obvious they're wearing a supportive garment shaped in somes ways to resemble the posture if not the form of the Spanish military armor of the period.

You’re 100% right! People often forget that men’s clothing was also shaped and padded during this period. They’ve x-rayed doublets in the v&a and found boning used in similar ways that you would see in a woman’s bodice) but also padding in that front v belly part too.

0 seconds ago We often overlook the influence of body odour had on fashion, especially around the neck and head. Showering and bathing was not a common practice back then, most fearing getting soaked was cause serious illness and possibly lead to death from a disease. Powdering and perfuming one’s face, head and neck was a common method of masking poor hygiene, hence the ruffled collar.
18th century embroidery is NO JOKE. (Trust me, we tried it.)
