Ivanchuk offered a draw to Carlsen somewhere around move 30 of the game. The fighter that Magnus is, declined the draw even though it would have been sufficient to help him advance to round 6 of the FIDE World Cup 2023. After a few moves, Vassily Ivanchuk resigned the game. And the question on everyone's mind was, why did Ivanchuk resign?

He resigned cause he was so disgusted by himself for simply blundering that f2 pawn and knowing he has to torture himself another hour for a meaningless draw .

He resigned mostly because he did not want to play endgame he cannot win. It is not so simple that 1. Bxb4, 2. Bxb4, Kxb4. This is losing, but white can play Kd5, Be3 or even g4 and outcome is not clear. Black is little better because of extra pawn, but is it enough to win ? I think Chucky calculated: Whether I draw or lose this game is not so important. But clearly I cannot win this game now, so I lose minimatch anyway and why suffer here another 30 moves if I can just resign and result is the same ? Result of minimatch is same ( I lost ) , prize money is same, will I really have to suffer this for couple of miserable rating points I get from draw ? Of course at this stage of his career, being veteran player in World Cup ( and played pretty successfully there ) he is not going to play for few rating points. He just shook hands which was easiest and the most reasonable thing to do .

You are absolutely right Stagna !!. My opinion of Ivanchuk changed as he is also a mere player trusting and want to steal the point out of much theory of Ruy Lopez... When the curtains are tilted, he does not want to engage.. He plays the lines, put rooks behind , did not exchange that does not favor , the math of chess does not end here.. Only marotheners reach the line. the sweat and grit missed.. my opinion, and no way difference to yours.. its parallel- already :) :)

Actually the outcome is clear, I do agree with your assessment regarding his mentality of not wanting to play on but the reasoning behind it is what I cannot agree with as like I mentioned prior on high depth the engine does believe the endgame is lost but there is still a lot of maneuvering to be done

I love your analysis and delivery. Keep it up! However, stockfish 16 shows this game is only slightly better for black (-0.7 @ level 50), with many moves left for white to draw (Bc1, Be3, Bf4, and g4).

At this point, the game is a draw, Ivanchuk knows this, Magnus knows this; by resigning Ivanchuk is saying that he cares nothing about out a draw or the rating points. Magnus is appreciative. Actually this entire game looks like it could have been played a few times before. Does anyone knows.

@@smishra264 So they can analyse the game after. Also you can type your and opponents time next to the moves so you are familiar with the time situation after the game. You can also type a little bit of notes on the paper so you remember what went through your head after you analyse the game.

Maybe he resigned, because he knew at best he could get a draw and lose the match. Resigning the game is like resigning the match. He probably didn't care about the rating points.
