This game is the game that got me into flight sims. I sincerely miss thid game. I used to play it on my dads laptop and my grandfathers old pc. I had almost every aircraft. This game is one of the first games i played seriously. Thank you for making this video. This game wasnt a failure in my eyes and i think they should allow downloads from the website again.

I enjoyed Microsoft Flight for what it was. Besides Hawaii there also was Alaska and more regions were supposed to come out later. It didn't lived long enough for that to happen though. I did a complete playthrough of all the missions and landing challenges. Some of them were pretty advanced (like ILS landings in no visibilty). As a 15 year old that was used to only playing War Thunder and having Flight Simulator X that didn't want to run and with only a keyboard was Microsoft Flight amazing for me, loved flying around Hawaii, seeing the mountains there and trying to landing places, seeing this game very nostalgic for me, tried finding it more recently for nostalgia, but haven't been able to find it.

Okay, first iirc Microsoft flight was not marketed as a "simulator." I don't remember exactly how it was described, but I believe it amounted to basically being a simcade. Which is basically what it was. Also, it seems like they dropped some planes from what you could play for free. I do remember flying a cessna in that game. I think this is an even further watered down "trial" version. Although why a f2p game would have a trial version is beyond me. Maybe this is the beta version or something. Anyway, from what I recall with a lot of the free content that wasn't removed, there was some trouble with being talked down to, as you mentioned. The missions were actually pretty fun, but there were a lot more than you got to see it seems. There was one where there was a hint and you had to figure out where certain (Geocaches I think they were referred to as? Not sure) things were, it was a lot like The Crew 2 lootboxes in freedrive. There were passenger missions where you had to fly a certain way to satisfy your passenger, usually smoothly or they would be unsatisfied (or there was one with live cargo, but idr whether you had to pay for that one). Goldrush missions were a thing, and those were basically missions where you had rings by windmills and you had to get the rings without hitting the windmill blades. The missions were actually fun, and many of them free. For some reason this version seems to have removed almost all of even the free ones. But there was a lot bad about it. Many of the Geocache missions required a P-51 or more powerful (if there were any more powerful, idr), or they couldn't be reached due to their altitude, and the P-51 you did have to pay for. One island on Hawaii got pretty boring, especially when you could fly the world in FSX. Characters were often annoying. Overall there wasn't a lot there, and too much of even that was locked behind a paywall, either directly or in the case of geocache missions indirectly by not providing the player with powerful enough planes to reach them. Overall it was a bad game with missions that in themselves were fun. I really hope we see more scenarios in FS2020 that are similar to what this game had. I actually rather liked the passenger missions that would force you to either limit g-forces and fly smoothly, or I think there was an adrenaline junkie one where they wanted you to fly high and wild or they would get bored. Aerial obstacle courses should make a comeback, that was fun. Geocaching was especially fun with friends, as you all look for something and then when someone gets close you try to triangulate where it is. But business model was awful, and didn't offer hardly anything in terms of variety. One thing that I think would have gone a long way would have been to be more upfront with what is locked behind a paywall instead of trying to frustrate the player into paying more, more area, and really this game just did not work well in a F2P setup. It just cost too much to make a very small amount of space as pretty as possible instead of doing what MS2020 is doing and have a large upfront payment and really work on it. Further, more multiplayer options would have helped. Mostly multiplayer was fly around, maybe talk about or help each other with missions but you couldn't really do anything versus, and co-op was just coaching each other through. And, again, more space. That was where they lost a huge chunk of their playerbase.

I'm surprised to hear you say you could only find a German version. It took me five minutes on Google to find an English version and even a step-by-step setup guide with a patch to get all the DLC. Having checked out the DLC though, I don't find any of it worth playing. Cruising the A5 around Hawaii is the most fun thing in the game, and as you say it's not worth spending much more than a day on it.

You know, it wasn't all that bad. I spent hours beta testing this. It certainly had potential. The main issue, too much DLC. EVERYTHING was hidden behind a pay wall. But it makes sense, the scenery was all hand crafted. Shame really, all people wanted at the time was FSX but with decent graphics and physics.

There exist a tool called FSToolkit that allows you to add all the game's DLC for free, but I don't know if it still works. You can even import the entire world scenery from FSX!

_MS Flight_ was a victim of the MS Flight Simulator franchise's previous success. People expected every new flight sim from Microsoft to build on the previous version, but that's not what this one did. They had a different vision here, which infuriated the hidebound flight sim community. Dogmatic simmers hated its gaming elements. They also hated it because it was a General Aviation sim - no big iron, no autopilot, no ATC. Aircraft and scenery from pervious versions could not be imported, and third party development were totally shut out. It was not perfect, but it was fun, and it looked great. They did offer more planes as DLC (although too many had no cockpits, you had to fly them externally) and eventually offered Alaska, which was beautifully rendered. Unfortunately, they pulled the plug on _Flight_ way too soon, before it ever had a chance to succeed, and when they did this it also took away some of the sim's fun features, like aerocaches, which were a blast. My experience with _MS Flight_ has left me skittish about diving into _Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020,_ which, like _Flight,_ relies heavily on an internet connection. What happens if Microsoft once again decides that a flight simulator doesn't fit its corporate mission, and they pull the plug on it after a year or two? How usable will it be?

Microsoft Flight 2012 was actually better than fsx in some point and it's really a good memory flying this simulator, you can even walk out the cockpit and swim in the water. And that was impressive for a flight sim

I remember back in 2012 & 2013 the developers were talking about adding Alaska and more aircraft on to the game but it never came to be. This game could've been better.

Fsx missions are fun Youre expecting to do a peaceful ifr flight but then you have like an engine failure and you have to land on an aircraft carrier or something

I had all of the Hawaiian Islands & Alaska. I had some of the add on planes but I refused to buy ones without cockpits in them. Alaska wasn’t all that well done but Hawaii and especially Oahu was quite good in places. Some of the atmospherics such as sunsets & shallow water (especially Pearl Harbor) were very good. On the other hand there were too few aircraft and too many of the ones that were there were incomplete. Too few aircraft and no jets at all was a major problem for MSF and years later for Dovetail’s FSW as well. Wrong approach for both sims. :)
