Why Did Moaning Myrtle Die in Harry Potter?

In Harry Potter, why did Myrtle die from the Basilisk's attack, but Colin survived even though he saw the monster through his camera and Myrtle saw it through her glasses? One possible explanation is that Myrtle mentioned crying before her death, and it's unlikely that someone would cry with their glasses on. However, if Myrtle died without her glasses, why did she become a ghost with them on?

Well, I wear glasses, but I don't place the glasses right next to my face. They're always about an inch from my face onto my nose. (Sorry, English isn't my first language and I had no idea how to explain this properly! I hope you still understand it.) Therefore, when my pupils are upwards, I don't see through my glasses while I'm wearing them. Maybe that was the case with her too.

Myrtle saw the basilisk thought her glasses as apposed to Collin through a camera which has mirrors. Therefore Myrtle didn't see a reflection but the full on basilisk, while Collin saw it through mirrors, or a reflection

@@Evelyn_Rose1151 ghosts are not complete transparent like glass. They are “pearly white and slightly transparent” so it would be like looking through a thick shimmery fog, you wouldn’t full see the creature’s eyes. Kinda like looking through cloth, you on,y see outlines and shapes, not the full thing.

The camera he had used mirrors to project an image on the viewfinder. And it was stated that reflections petrify. Looking at the basilisk through glasses is not through a reflection. What is the issue here?

Because cameras in those days used mirrors, digital ones don't but Colin's was an old one that used mirrors! Glasses don't reflect what you see, the mirrors in the camera did! This isn't a plot hole!

I would be interested to know if looking at a Basilisk through a digital camera would petrify the person at all, as you are essentially looking at a picture of it. Definitely food for thought.

I looked up the camera Collin used in the movie and it doesn’t seem to have any mirrors. It’s a rangefinder camera

She is not looking at it indirectly as she has improved vision with glasses, a camera however does not help Colin view things better therefore is indirect view. I have Np idea If I made sense but that's what I think.

A person gets petrified when he/she sees the basilisk through an object. But it isn't the same for glasses. She died as the glasses can't prevent a person from dying by staring at the basilisk.

As for the glasses as a ghost, that's just how she saw herself, something that was significant to her in life so just like the clothes, the glasses appear because that's the way Myrtle remembers herself. Ghosts don't feel cold. They don't need clothes. But they still project them as part of their self-image.

No its because the classic polaroid camera works with a series of mirrors, it creates an image by reflecting light, while glasses do not reflect light.

After hearing someone she could have been drying her eyes from tears so her glasses were not on and she partially put her glasses on ,died and her glasses landed on her eyes.

My theory is that the glasses were at the tip of her nose so far till see could see the snake with her own eyes but when she became a ghost she put them back to her eyes

It is explained like this. The petrified students did not look directly at the basilisk. They only saw reflections of the monster. Myrtle died because she looked right into the basilisk's eyes.

Well when your crying with glasses you don't usually take them off, you lift them up enough to wipe your eyes, so myrtle was technically wearing her glasses but saw the basilisk without them

Because with cameras, you are actually the picture that’s being taken you’re seeing through a mirror because it goes from the hole to the mirror and then out the front of the Lense hence why wasn’t cold

It’s most likely that instead of leaving her glasses she was carrying them therefore dying with them in her hand and having them when she was a ghost so she probably put them back on after.

If it was a SLR Camera, it would pass through the lens, just like glasses, but then would go through a double reflection off the cameras 2 mirrors, reflecting the image through the view finder. So he would have survived due to only seeing the reflection of the Basilisk through his camera, whereas Myrtle got a focused direct glance of the beast through her glasses.

It tells us that the only way to survive the look of a basilisk is by a mirror or reflection. Glasses don’t reflect properly but otherwise it’s a great theory.

What if....Myrtle was a death eater and then killed herself and blamed it on the basilisk cause she did not like voldy the mouldy 🤯🤯....lol, Hermione would give me a look and start scolding Me if I said this to her 😂 ( this is not my explanation, I just said it for fun 😅)

I guessed it’s because of the slr mechanism. But Collin used a rangefinder; at least according to google. Maybe in the books he used a slr, and there I guess it would make sense because a slr uses mirrors. But a rangefinder as used in the movies doesn’t. But my theory is that jk Rowling just didn’t think this one through

But then again, he couldve used something like a visoflex. But I didn’t find any examples of the argus c3 using something like a visoflex. And I couldn’t find mirrors being used in the viewfinder or rangefinder of the camera. So yeah. Just something that the producers of the movie and possible Rowling overlooked

So I just read some more about rangefinder cameras and I was wrong. Partially. The rangefinder does have mirrors but there is direct light passing through the rangefinder as well. So Collin saw the basilisk reflected and directly. Also, I did spend half and hour looking this up, but I did learn more about cameras so time well spent?
