I've been wondering the same thing about towing efficiency on this vehicle. If the ramcharger gets better than the supposed 50% range tax from EV-only towing, we could be looking at 350-400 miles towing (under ideas conditions of course). That would blow my mind.

I'm curious about towing range too. Let's hope it's better than the 9-10 mpg most of get from our 5.7L Hemis. I think the reduced range in towing is primarily the effect of drag from the trailer, irrespective of powerplant efficiency. However, let's hope this powertrain approach boosts efficiency by some significant percentage. An advantage over a pure EV is that you'll be able to use fuel pumps at gas stations which you won't be able to do with a pure EV until trailering EV chargers become common (seems like a long way off). Also, in my mind, this vehicle will be an ideal tow vehicle for boondocking and off roading. If your travel trailer has a lot of solar and battery capacity, you could envision being able to flow electron's to the travel trailer or vice versa depending on your needs at any given time.

I am super excited about this too. I was looking to buy a new truck in the next 6 months to a year. Probably going to reserve a spot for a Ramcharger. The big question for me is what it's off-road capabilities will be? It doesn't look like it will be in a Rebel trim. But Ram has said it will have air ride that can be set for off-roading. And based on the numbers Ram is providing, the Ramcharger will pretty much have best in class towing and payload. Only a few specific Ford or Chevy 1/2 tons would potentially be better. The other question is what will the price be? I've seen $30-40k thrown around, but that seems low considering the technology going into this.

Thank you for your comments and research. What are your thoughts about a small diesel like a Kubota V1505-E3B that weighs less than 250 lbs? Like you point out, a generator engine must simply run at a constant RPM efficiently. This engine weighs at least 50 lbs less than a Pentastar so I would think that with the exhaust it might weigh about the same and use less fuel.

...this is the best way to make an 'EV' truck (which seems to be a re-birth of the early 2000's Chrysler ENVI program)...batteries alone were never going to do it for a multitude of reasons, but by adding the genset that more or less eliminates all of the issues that truck BEV's face as they are now (and likely the future)...by running the motors off of the genset/battery combination you get the best of both worlds, quick refuels (which is extremely important to people using these for work), you never really have a need for a stand-alone charging station as once you refill the tank you drive your charger... ...also, because the engine is permitted to stay in it's peak efficiency so that you get; 1 the best mileage possible, and 2 keeps maintenance costs for that engine to an absolute minimum as you aren't revving it up and down all the time where you create carbon buildup in the cylinders and oil...and unlike say a diesel-electric locomotive, you use the batteries as a buffer. Under hard acceleration or sudden loads (passing, going uphill) the batteries absorb the heavy drain...and then when you're back to cruising the genset can power the motors as well as charge the batteries... ...there are three proper ways to build an EV type truck (and the latter two should be used on cars) this sort of range extender, pure hydrogen burn (internal combustion) or hydrogen fuel cells...all of which have the realistic benefits of an EV, but without the headache of charging and expensive battery replacements, as well as all the toxic goodness of a spent battery pack. ...the only positive of a BEV are they can be cheap to produce (to an extent, and potential penalty of dangerous cheaply made batteries), and are already here...

the hurricane engine would also require premium fuel to run which increases the cost of ownership. the v6 has better packaging, will run with 87 octane, and it's a pretty good engine. as far a diesel it goes back to cost of ownership, not really emissions. most people don't want a diesel unless they are doing heavy hauling. price for diesel is higher than almost any other available fuel at the pumps .

@CTECH-REVIEW I would think the base model version may not require it. But like with most vehicles with forced induction it will recommend it so it runs at peak performance. But the high output versions most definitely will require at minimum 91 octane but probably recommend octane like 93 or more for optimal performance. You could run 87 in em but I am sure the car is going to be very unhappy about it. And you'll know because it is not going to run well at all.

I’d like to see GM make a 1500 diesel plug in hybrid. Why? .. all I need is 25-30 miles of battery only range 4 days a week. That is a realistic number for a plug in hybrid. Then the 3.0 diesel using the battery in long range mode would see a very good economy overall. We like and use diesel generators for the most reliable generators.

For a PHEV to make sense, you need to be able to plug it everyday, eg at home at night. But then in most scenario an EV makes quite more sense. Of course with a pure EV when you have to two long distances you will probably have to charge more often than comfortable, so it all depends of how often it happens to you.
@CTECH-REVIEW4 ай бұрын
For a truck I feel a PHEV is a better solution for the majority of truck owners that use a truck as a truck.
@Theo-xi1jx3 ай бұрын
As a truck owner, a pure EV is plain garbage. No thanks to 90 miles, unhitching trailer, charging for 20 minutes, hooking trailer back up, then getting another whopping 90 miles before you rinse and repeat. And that's under good conditions.
@didierpuzenat72803 ай бұрын
@@Theo-xi1jx Most truck owners never tow and rarely carry thinks in the bed. And more and more fast charger sites include some "parallel park" stalls. Finally, the more charges you make, the less energy you waste since an EV is far more efficient than an ICE vehicle. And of course it saves a lot of CO2. But sure, for people who often tow on long distances, trucks (or cars) with higher battery capacity will be welcome, and it will happen as battery prices get lower. In the meantime, I guess the best solution is to stop many times, and definitively not to buy stupid PHEVs who will probably never been plugged (as most studies demonstrate), and of course not either some "self charging" hybrid trucks since it is far too little far too late regarding the climate warming emergency.
@Theo-xi1jx3 ай бұрын
@@didierpuzenat7280 No....the best solution isn't to stop and charge many times. And no, the answer isn't large batteries that weight more than a car. And there is no 'climate warming emergency' that you will solve by going to Electric cars. You could take every car in America and make them electric and it will not solve anything except line certain pocket books. You're just trading CO2 for other issues such as child mining in some foreign country with no regulations. And additional weight on the roads and infrastructure. And tire wear particulates, which will be the next 'unforseen consequence' that anyone with half a brain can see coming. As for your 'stupid PHEV' statement, I would plug in every night and use batteries 95% of the time I drive. Why? It's very convenient. On trips, I would fill up with gas 100% of the time. Why? It's convenient. Whether I drive a ICE or a PHEV is a wash as far as the earth is concerned.

I saw another review saying that they are tuning the Pentastar engine for peak efficiency in electric power generation and that their testing showed that this six cylinder could deliver better efficiency than a 4 cylinder engine with similar power generation capability. I don't remember the specifics of why, but I recall something about the RPM's with the Pentastar being significantly lower than with smaller engines. Also, the cost of the pentastar is expected to bel low since it's been in production so long and is an issue in keeping the vehicle affordable.

Thank you for your comment, and as much as I love diesel engines in this use case I think a basis NA gas V6 makes more sense than a turbo diesel engine.
