The Boxer Rebellion saw Chinese rebels attempt to force foreign influence out of the country and it resulted in none of that happening. Instead eight great powers formed a coalition to crush the rebellion and force more concessions out of China. But given how much the great powers disliked each other why did they team up and what made the Boxer Rebellion in particular so important? To find out watch this short and simple animated history documentary.

@@5thMilitia The Dutch sent some troops, but did not actively do much.Because of this sources are rather hard to find online. I think your best bet would be a book on maritime (colonial?) Dutch history during this period. I did find a non academic Dutch article online "Ter bescherming der Nederlandse belangen, Nederlandse Mariniers in China, 1900-1920" (starting from page 9, Nederlandse mariniers in Chinese wateren). A short but interesting read, even if the Dutch never saw any action in China.

Small correction/clarification: the Qing court officially declared war on all nations that had a legation in Beijing: the eight nations and Belgium, Spain and the Netherlands. Belgium and the Netherlands did not join the alliance in order to maintain their neutrality, although the Netherlands did send some ships. So technically you should have said it was an alliance of eight great powers (and also the Netherlands) that got involved.

Shooting Archduke Francis was more like throwing a match on gunpowder barrel. There were many other more important reasons, e.c. independence movements becoming more popular, fading power of colonial empires, prestige and many other complicated issues.
