Man, as someone who freakin’ loves Tales of this excited me a lot despite my gripes with the game. I really do hope the Crestoria manga does well and that Crestoria gets revived as a proper game potentially.

i'll never forgive bamco for making crestoria a mobile game. crestoria would have been the perfect console release and i know for a fact it would have done well with how intriguing the story, characters, and setting it. i'm still upset they chose to continue the story as a manga. i guess it's better than nothing but it really deserves it's own game or at least an anime... maybe the manga will do well enough that they'll make it into an anime at some point it'll never stop being funny to me that luminaria closed down not even a year after releasing. i hope bamco never makes a new mobile game and just sticks to asteria and rays, maybe they'll decide to relocalize rays again after their horrible first attempt with a completely new localization team behind it that actually bothers to market it and advertise it

Crestoria was the only gacha I ever bothered to continue playing, I would even spend my time in class playing the game just so I wouldn’t miss out on extra gleamstones. So i was sad to hear that it was closing its services after I came back to it again after a few months. Hands down the thing I loved most was the story and the characters, all of them had special quirks and things to offer and the fact that bamco just disregarded it entirely is so upsetting. I GENUINELY hope that the manga does well and that we’ll even get a proper spinoff game with them like another Tales of the Heroes. I just don’t want to see these characters get thrown out the window and forgotten.

Coming back to this video and at the end hearing you mention Luminaria reminded me how it announced its closure yesterday. …Not even reaching its half anniversary and that alone just says a lot about the fate of Tales mobile games

Tales of rays was sooo good in my opinion, it had a decent story, but the overall thing i wnjoyed was the gameplay, its literally a tales of gameplay and not some boring turnbased. That what made the tales of rpg games unique, realtime action. The gatcha was kinda worth getting because of the unique mystic artes they got to do, some are iconic and some are unique and fresh. I still play Jp Rays today.

For some reason, no matter what the Tales of Series does, the mobile games tend to fail in the West after little more than a year - Luminaria broke the mold by being cancelled BEFORE it’s anniversary, though. They could so easily re write a few of the characters from other games as new characters and just give us a mainline game that could easily be the best story seen in Tales. It really was an amazing and thought provoking story for sure.

I've never really gotten to play Crestoria. I was extremely interested in the story, which in itself had the potential to be a main game to me. When it launched, I had an "older" phone from 2017 and experienced huge performance issues with lagging, freezing or the game just straight up crashing. Once I got a new phone, I was excited to play it, only to then realize the game wasn't available for my new phone. Shortly after, the shutdown was announced.

I was always curious about how the people would voice how they felt about this game on video. So far you’re the only person who went this far about the characters, story, meta and game modes you can play. I only played the game on otw last 2 months. Somewhat glad yet upset I missed out on this

Really loved the breakdown on this! I had similarly indepth and a long, storied, emotional ride with Love Live! School Idol Festival and Dragalia Lost. There's something about gacha games where the highs are *really* high, but when things start to go downhill they rarely recover from it. Still haven't learned my lesson though and am currently on my 3rd love haha

this is why I don't put money into gacha games. They close and you lose access to the game you paid for

I really liked Crestoria! I thought the characters were fun, and I mainly played it for the story (though at times I did get a little more invested in the other gameplay loops too; Dissidia Opera Omnia always held my interest better in the grinding sense though). Shame it was plagued by so many issues. Vicious was hot.

I know nothing about this series/gacha, yet your passion, knowledge, frustration, and humor had me hooked the whole way through

The story and characters in this game are amazing. Even reusing characters from other Tales of Games, they did a lot of interesting things with them which made the Side Stories fun to read. But there's a lot of problems with the core gameplay loop as well as the battle system itself. The game would have been better off as a series of visual novels sold in installments. Another thing was the game overall focused too much on SSR units. SR units not having any kind of ougi, even like a discount ougi meant they were at a huge disadvantage most of the time.

Oh damn, KZfaq doing me a solid for a change by recommending this on my homepage! I’m a huge Tales of fan and I put hundreds of hours into Crestoria, so I was really disappointed that it failed. Loved the video though, so an easy sub from me!

Thanks for this, I adored this game because Tales is my favorite RPG series, but felt the writing was on the wall so I left about 6 months until close announcement. Before that I just did dailies and didn’t care to even check on updates, I had no idea there were even summon spirits in the game. A shame too, other than Pokemon Masters, this has been the most lucky I’ve been in any gacha.

I didn't get into the issues that existed with the game until the Half Ani where I joined the Crestoria Discord Server. ...seeing that people were having the same issues, and seeing them all in your video...it's like going through a trip I wanted to love but it only ended cause the car broke down, and you had to walk the whole 3 day trip home. Felt longer than it was, but this game was why I got up in the my reason for getting up sometimes. At 3PM EST, the reset for each day. Which, sounds dumb now, but it did get me to actually wake up every day rather than sleep in during a really rough time. I only got AniKanata via pity...at the very end...as a F2P, it was HELL...and I actually did put in money later on to show my actual love for what the game could become, but I was soured as time went on, and when they said they were closing the game, I stopped...cold. It felt weird. I rolled for Sync every EX banner...never got him. Being the Fon Master Fanboy I am, and lover of Tales Of The Abyss, it hurt to never get him. (I don't think EX summons were even IN that final "all SSR banner they ran near the end of the game...) I hear rumors that the manga might not happen and it was Bamco's way of damage control to shut fans up. Tales Of Arise came out, it was meh...lifeless compared to the last main series Tales game...and Tales of Luminaria, barely worked on anything but modern phones, and even then...has since shutdown. Being a Tales fan since Crestoira is tough... That being said, I'm gonna go play one of the older games... I think, I need a taste of a better time. Love your video on this by the way. You hit the nail on the end with every beat. Here's hoping that manga for Crestoira comes out soon.

I think the lack of pity system was a big problem as well as the multiple bugs at the start, I know a lot of people left in the first month because of how unstable the game is. Arena battles would crash my game very often even towards the end. My one critique is about the writing for events which all comes down to opinion. Personally i really loved the Richard and Rowen side story because Rowen barely gets screen time in these mobile games and hes my favourite from Xillia. I do like Richard but it was nice to see them shine a light on someone who normally gets shafted. That being said I would have preferred less time on Luke and Alisha who we've seen a lot already in the main story. Your voice is also very pleasant to listen to! And the humour was great. Crestoria felt like they never intended for it to succeed. Pretty much every mobile endeavor they have is solely for a quick buck when it comes to the global release. (Not sure about ToL; I didn't pay attention to it, but I'm told it had more support.) I went into this game knowing full well they would cancel it and it was a fully planned limited time thing. They really didn't make much of an effort to hide their intentions on it (the way the game was designed to have an impossibly fast content release cycle was a noticable red flag, and gacha whales peaked insanely fast in this game compared to other gachas. It was "cheap" by comparison) either, so I was surprised to hear that people didn't expect it to shut down. To me, it always looked like it was going to be another short-lived Tales mobile game that they would use to get a quick buck from the Western market, and then shut down. The actual problems that the game itself had, such as optimization, crashes, maintenance's, etc never actually bothered me. And to be honest I don't think they contributed anything at all to the failure of the game, because again, I feel like they just wanted to get in, make money, and shut it down. If anything, I feel this game was primarily developed as a profitable way to create high quality models of fan favorites that they could use for future games. It wouldn't surprise me at all if we see mileage from these models for another project in the future. Crestoria just didn't feel like an honest attempt from Bamco to me.

The main problem of the game was the gacha and rarity of characters. SSR characters being the only characters with mystic artes pretty much made every character that wasn't a SSR a complete dud. It doesn't help that even the main characters of the game itself had their mystic artes also locked behind the gacha with SSR varients of themselves that can only be obtained in gacha which just felt like a slap to the face after they spent so much time advertising them and their mystic artes with these cool trailers and hyping them up in the story.

I played Links and Rays first, so I was extremely disappointed that they both ended up shutting down (at least globablly). When Crestoria was announced, I was kinda hesitant to become invested in the game after what happened to the first two mobile games...

The only reason why Tales of Crestoria fails is bcs it doesn't use Linear Motion Battle System like how Tales game should be. Tales of the Rays succeed not only bcs it doesn't need to roll for characters, but because it used a familiar Tales battle system imo

As someone who was there for Global Rays and has been playing JP Rays ever since global shut down, I was worried about it shutting down prematurely since day one. Unfortunately I was proven to be right and I couldn't be more upset that I was.

I just watched this video almost a month after Luminaria ended... and I'm sad to say that ended in even less time than Crestoria did. I think Bamco is struggling to find a balance between balance and content. Honestly, I think Crestoria would have worked much better as either an escort title or, hell, maybe a full mothership.

I was always really mad that they made this a mobile f2p game. From the teasers and concepts it looked like it had potential to be one of the best Tales mothership titles, so, even if it's a bit childish, I'm glad it crashed and burned. Fuck bamco.

I played tales of the rays and it had a more traditional tales battle system which is action-oriented. I wish they would bring it back. Making it turn based just doesnt feel like an actual tales game anymore

Very very good! Love to see someone disect something they put the hours into. I had put my time into genshin impact and man was it a waste. Was playing on pc and wasn't thinking about how it's a phone game and got really disappointed in the mechanics being as shallow as they were.

Tales of Link was peak Tales mobile gaming and I fucking want it back. The story of that game doesn't deserve to be forgotten, and the gameplay, compared to the other two, was actually fun. Wasn't much of a fan of Crestoria, it was pretty mid in terms of characters and story, but low tier in gameplay. It was a slog.. And the endless connectivity issues were annoying too.

Thank you for such an awesome deep dive on this what I guess i'll call fascinating social experiment of a gacha game? lol I played suuuuper casually which i now guess was the right way to go as I only really played for the main story and the occasional arena battle that was fine as long as I didn't run into any tryhards which of course wouldnt be at the lower ranks. Nobody in my circles was really playing this game and I thought it was kind of a shame so I wasn't surprised to hear it was closing. But its honestly even more sad to hear how those who were dedicated to Crestoria were really the only ones being punished. And thanks to you now learning that Tales mobile games have always been kinda cursed, Luminaria looking like an almost Genshin Clone seems like a yikes waiting to happen since theres no way youre going to outdo Genshin at its own game lol

Kanata was right in killing that slave trading father of his, just like Yuri was right in his vigilante killings in Vesperia, 100%, but he really wouldn't have had to do that if HE HAD A FUCKING ORB OF HIS OWN!! Seriously, like half of the conflict in the game could've been solved if the GOOD GUYS USED THE ORBS TO THEIR FUCKING ADVANTAGE!!

You hit it right in the nail in this video, I'm still pissed that this amazing story going on, the Transgressor Yuri at the end was the last nail that hurt in the coffin. The manga for me is a bad idea, they could easely re use the assets of the game and make it a full game by its own to buy either mobile or in console, digital only won't matter but I can easely pay 40 bucks for that full game. But they decided to do the worst of all options, cancel it half thru the story and cancel the cameo in the story. I can say that Luminaria is better and doesn't have the flaws in the gameplay, is not as broken than Crestoria. Here any pull even if you don't get what you want still make every character in the roster stronger make it at least affordable to keep pulling to get the best stuff. Try luminaria, is free, the story is getting as good as Crestoria (trust me) and the characters are very likeable. I play it in English and i have to say the work there is pretty good, i love characters like August reminds me of Jade, Maxime is the childish, funny character that does good with some sort of British accent, Lucien the interesting guy just like August, he's stronger but with tons of weak point (in the character lore not on gameplay) Tons of good stuff. About this video, what excellent compilation, i miss the game already, meakyu still top tier in mascots.

it may be wrong but ive since subscribed to the train of thought that bamco just expects to much from the north american audience while also completely ignore us. i started thinking this way when i was in my teens heres about how graces or xillia (cant remeber which exactly) saved the series in north american as it would have otherwise been the last one released here since they said over at bamco that the sales were to low, but as someone who was a massive tales fan at the time i practicly blew a fuse hearing that because id been pre-ordering the collectors editions and buying all the games and could atest to the low inventory every single game store in my city had because of how hard id have to search to get them most of the time. the way i saw it sales were low because stock was low, all the pre-orders for the games in my area would be gone within 1 or 2 days and everyone else would have to wait for trade in's or go online to try and get some. but the point im trying to get at is it felt similar with the mobile games, they had to high expectations from the american audience while also providing us with minimal to no content comperatively, i still love the tales series and i even named my daughter Asbel after the mc from graces, but i always see bamco as the sketchy uncle i have to tolerate to be alopud to play the games at all XD

I play asteria and tho there is power creep, it's waaaaaaay slower, I still can sometimes use my unities from 4+ years ago depending on the boss. of course there's you typical mobile games flaws, but it's not as bad as the other tales games.

When gacha are more merciful on Kamihime, Mist Train Girls and Magicami than Tales of Crestoria. You know you've done something wrong.

Tales of crestoria fail because of one thing. Bugs.. Yeah those pesty bugs that roaming around our house. And the lag is literally questionablr in this game. I have a good smartphone but the fps drop quite often. More in the summon menu.

Also, Tales games traditionally use real time hack and slash combat. Crestoria on the other hand, uses turn based combat. One that is quite dated and boring. And with heavy emphasis on stats to encourage players to buy upgrades.

It failed because they wanted it to. Just like all of their mobile game projects that aren't the Japanese version of Tales of the Rays and Tales of Link (which ended after a long run and did well), the worldwide versions of these apps are just cash grabs. They're inherently designed to get as much money out of dedicated fans as possible before they shut down at around the 1-year mark. It's their strategy in the West for the mobile market. It was so inherently obvious in the way they designed the game too. Luminaria and Crestoria were cash mines masquerading as games that were on a deliberate time crunch

I loved the story. It was great, but I stopped playing because the connection to game was rather poor. Not from my end, I checked it. Doubled checked and then checked again. It wasn’t my end.

In PVP, Ani Mileena, Forte, Ani Vicious and Kanata were all you needed. A certified 2-turn killer of the enemy team. It was so easy it was pathetic... Of course, with OL stone for Mileena and crit for Kanata. Hope you saved that stone of his, or you had to be satisfied with the SR kid stone like me. It was more than enough ofc. There was no balancing in this game at all... I pity the poor bastards who didn't get Anniversary God Kanata. Frankly I've no fucking clue why I bothered to grind for the Free Sorey myself either. His over limit took fucking forever to fill up, no matter the stone, so he wasn't useful in the least. All that grinding for unusable shit. My memory of the game consists of shit PvP and grinding, with ehh story. My apologies if I'm filling the comment section with tangents that you may or may not cover later on in the video. I've just had past comment strings get deleted accidentally, so I tend to post them mid-video just in case.

I just spend about half of a year on this game form the first day the game released. The main story line was too slow. They were too easy since most players had already trained their characters to be too much powerful. I quit this game because it trash out so often and the new main story was too slow to be released. Also, doing every day reward tasks are so boring !

It was such a waste, I enjoy the game so much but they keep shutting game mobile game like it nothing, I know many not playing it but atleast make a offline story like PC port I miss both my Santa Mikleo and Bribe Alisha

35 minutes to just say Bandai Namco lmao. In the first place, people especially gacha whales and those who in the know avoid Bandai Namco mobile games like a plague. How many Tales game closing before Crestoria? Yeah... No way people going to play, too much distrust and bad reputation. No matter how good the game is, its not worth it when its Bandai.

I enjoyed the video, and it was very well made. Didn't even realise I'd watched it all way through! I'm a massive Tales series fan and, fully aware of Bamco's reputation, decided to give Crestoria a shot. I loved it in the sense that it was my first real exposure to favourites like Leon Magnus, given that I don't speak Japanese and could only stare longingly at gameplay footage from the Japanese version and the many many many delayed or cancelled translation projects over the years because Bamco just _doesn't_ want to re-release them for a global audience... I didn't last too long playing the game though. The story was amazing, especially by mobile game standards, but the gameplay loop seemed like a strictly inferior Granblue Fantasy, not to mention all the bugs and crashes. I left even before Makina was playable. My weakest moment was whaling for Summer Kanonno, lol. I do remember the battle tower being pretty challenging, so it's a shame that became trivialised eventually. I still love Tales, though. I'm just probably going to give the gachas a wide berth from now on.

The story of Crestoria was pretty decent - which is uncommon for a mobile game. The battle system sucked though. Round based in a "Tales of" game? Really!? It also didn't help that the meta was repeating the same raids over and over and over again. And there was one more thing. The game had an *alleged* 5% gacha rate for the highest rarity units. I rage quit Crestoria after not getting any 5 star in 150!!!!! consecutive pulls. Needless to say I sensed a scam and felt ripped off. Many other players had the same experience with the gacha and quit over this.

I haven't really dabled into the "tales of" series of games but I remember downloading crestoria and playing it for a bit (I think my phone's storage was full so I only managed to play a portion of the tutorial) A friend recommended it to me saying it was better than another gacha game called granblue fantasy so I was surprised when the other day I found out it had EOS 2 years ago 😭
