Another top video well produced and narrated in a format that is easy to convey the content. I learned quite a lot from this one. The decline of the ancient Maya is an interesting if unanswered one but this at least gives us some context of what might have been. Thank you for sharing.

I've always wondered why so many ancient civilizations practiced human and nonhuman sacrifice. Ok, i get sacrificing to whatever gods they thought were around to gain their favor. But, what made them believe that human sacrifice was what the gods wanted? Wasn't there anyone who would stand up and say, wait a minute, that's not gonna work? I guess anyone who did, risked ending up sacrificed themselves.

We still do and yes it's still a game and yes it has to be willing and yes we still think it's honorable. We still compensate the family and still like to chose from certain blood lines. I'm talking about war people! War is a narrative driven modernday sacrifice for a better harvest or more money. We're no better than them. No diffrent

Well, it's like this. In the eyss of humans at least, human blood is the most precious thing you can sAcrifice. To ensure the favor of the Gods, it's not wise to be a cheapskate. Of course, they prefer to sacrifice POW's, but in times of perel sometimes they would even up the ate by offering children. It's cruel, but in the eyes of the ancients, this wasn't a mete ritual: it was ne cessary to survive. Please the gods, or they will release their anger on you.

What stands out most in this series is that not one single Mayan was consulted in this entire two year excavation. The Mayans are not all gone. Mayan is still a spoken language in parts of Mexico and central America. I traveled with a Mayan shaman to all of the sites in the Yucatan peninsula and listened to his teachings, passed down to him for generations. He had a lot to say about the western interpretation of their culture. Most of these interpretations, he said, are wrong. You'd think archaeology would have decolonized itself by now.

@@kim-hung-kimschi I hate the Frankfurt style of ideas OP shilled, but we should not ignore the legends. They were passed down for a reason, there is some element of truth to a myth. We used to think Troy was a myth until the 19th century.

I agree - indigenous knowledge should always be part of the narrative. When we organize tours to this region, we work with national licensed guides but also hire local indigenous guides when they are available. There are a lot of changes taking place right now, in the way these sites are managed. When you visit Bonampak and Calakmul now, you are required to hire the local indigenous Maya to deliver you to the site, and often someone is there to guide. I expect this is going to become more prominent, due to precedents already set at Dzibilchaltun more recently, though this truly started in 2007 with Chichen Itza. This has also affected Mayapan and Yaxchilan, and Palenque now charges more for the ejido. I expect more power will be given back to the Maya, at least with regards to tourism dollars going to their communities, in future.

The guy who has been studying Maya bones for 20 years Shows a skull with obvious head binding But no mention of the giant elongated skulls that are not artificial deformation ....He's a real genius :)

It probably starts by removing criminals, undesirables, political rivals and becomes religion/entertainment. Ex. "Hey, Steve crashed his manure cart into the reservoir, now the Gods are angry and caused everyone to get sick...Sacrifice him!" Life was hard and insanely boring. I mean "Let's drill holes in our teeth and smash baby heads into weird shapes", boring.

But the victory over the Mexicas was not due to a systematic genocide. If not to the alliance of the Spanish with a multitude of tribes that accumulated Centuries of "Bloody episodes" at the hands of the Mexicas. For every Spanish soldier there were 10 allied native soldiers. And in some battles up to 30 native soldiers for each Spaniard. The alliance with the Mesoamerican natives was decisive. There was war, conquest and greed, but also alliances, miscegenation and cultural flowering. Go to Mexico and marvel.

My Nan is Mayan, I popped out to get some milk from corner shop, while I was gone she escaped from the cellar and sacrificed my cat in the back garden over a fire pit, I was really sad 😢
