This was done when two valuable members of the same clan couldn't risk a regular duel and one of them dying.

Shields were used with less armored warriors. As armor increasingly covered more of the body and became heavier, the need of the shield decreased. Gunpowder also decreased the need for shields and armor. Using a shield to defend was very taxing on the support arm. Very interesting video. I hope to see more content.

this checks out when you factor in polearms being the dominant weapon, which also discourages shield use, and the development of Ou yoroi and dou maru which features huge shoulder plates which effectively functioned as shoulder mounted shields. and those shoulder shields became noticeably smaller on tosei gusoku which corresponded with the introduction of muskets

also, because melee was mostly different polearms and not katana, the japanese added a blade or two to the side of the spear head and invented "pulling" techniques to thrust the spear beyond the opponent and get that additional bladed edge to nick their enemies by Pulling the spear back; making the shield useless as a defense outside of forceful parry.

Early period: The Jomon/Emishi were horse archers and the Samurai preferred to have shileded shoulders and a big helmet, in order to use their own bows. It might sound silly but the literal reason why shield is not that good in skyrim. Their goal was to have bigger, heavier katanas that could pierce armor and those were weilded by both hands not one, as they were too heavy. So, damage over protection, and it makes even more sense as you add the fact that real swordsmanship is not like skyrim. If you don't have a shield you can still dodge or defend with your sword. So martial arts and swordmanship over shields.

other factors too: - Japanese armies in the 11th century started to have wider use of armor even in peasant conscripts because of better iron trade with China and korea, making archery an even more common battlefield tactic, so much so that by the rise of Samurai armies battles would be decided by singular duels with champions. - since the Kamakura shogunate's reign, Samurai armies preferred heavy two-handed weapons like long spears to counter the increased use of charges and cavalry. Short spears and swords were rare to see because of the heavy reliance in these two handed long weapons, even the common sword was a long sword which is rarer than some people think and says a lot about weapons of the time. basically Japan quickly saw how effective an armored long spear unit was against an opposing army

It really depends on the type of army. Many cultures would either not use shields or use small shields. Pike type infantry is a big example of this. Japanese infantry typically used spear and pike type weapons which made shields hard to use. Plus, due to a combination of the relatively small size of armies and the heavily restricted terrain, Japanese infantry fought in more open formations that were heavily supported by guns and bows.

Steel was a rarity, Sword HAD to be curved, Curved means slashing and thrusting only with limited parrying to keep the sword intact, But need both hands to hold the sword or slashing gets far weaker with one hand, thus no shield. I believe pride plays a crucial factor here.

Limited parrying? You never went to kendo/iaito. There is a lot of parrying with the side and even the back of the sword, just not with the edge like Europeans are used to.

@@TheTeodorsoldierabvb there is now indeed, but in medieval Nippon due to shortage of decent steel repairing a damaged sword was quite expensive. And unlike European dual edged short/longswords, an edged Katana/Uchigatana/Tachi is a lot prone to damage and break often after a prolonged exchange of blows. This is one reason most samurai would often carry two swords with them in every battle.

@@asifiqbal1117 They carried two because they had different lengths for fighting in and outdoors. Tachi from the earliet period weren't paired with a shorter blade though. And parrying is 50% of all japanese sword techniques because anything else, in a sword fight, is pure fantasy. They did get more damaged on the edge, hence the techniques I mentioned

It still baffles me why we have to explain this shit to people as it's actually (not quite, but pretty damn close) the same reason they fell out of use in Europe and few people seem to have trouble grasping the European side of things.

the thing is shields were used and was much more common in europe up to around 1400ad, while in japan it was much less common.

@@Lucatzz This doesn't really have anything to do with the similar reason as to why they changed though. Bows stopped being used by people in favor of guns. "But hurr durr so and so actually adopted guns slightly later than..." yeah but it's separate point. The reason is still the same.

Didn’t they also have like a cape or parachute like thing that would trail behind their horse to absorb incoming arrows? I think it was called a “Horo” Wouldn’t that count as a shield?
