Tell me about it. I was a Rams fan back then and the team under George Allen was VERY frustrating! The d was one of the best. The special teams were strong. But the offense was just too conservative. The brides maid never the bride. The Rams were a tough team to play and now possess a storied history. George Allen teams always played outstanding special teams....Don't you love classic football cards? My Dad maintained that Allen's teams peaked too soon and that they were unable to maintain a high level of intensity throughout the entire regulat and post-season. While that generally may be true, it wasn't in '72. My 1973 football cards had tape, staples and punch holes in some of them - totally abused. Hard to believe teams played 6 exhibition games in those days. Rams started out on fire, winning all of their exhibitions and their 1st 3 games easily. But they were only a little over .500 the rest of the way, going 6-4-1 to finish the season. Allen's Rams did have a tendency to start fast, then burn out towards the end. In '68, Rams owner Dan Reeves fired Allen after the season, causing a revolt among the team's stars. Reeves relented and rehired Allen. No such thing after 1970, when Allen was fired again...and then inexplicably rehired in 1978 by the Rams but that time, he didn't even make it out of pre-season, being fired once again. Ray Malavasi, his replacement finally landed Rams into Super Bowl in 1980, something neither Allen, Prothro or Chuck Knox could do.

Easy answer. The San Francisco 49ers finally got a good defense and got explosive players at key positions on offense. They still couldn't beat the Rams but the Rams couldn't beat anyone else when it counted and John Brodie had a season for the ages

And would eventually become Long Beach State's final coach before they would shut down the program permanently. Terrell Davis, who went on to win titles with the Denver Broncos, would been George Allen's final great player he would end up coaching. Then (as we all recall) it was the Dallas COWboys vs. Baltimore Colts in that "(Comedy of Errors) Super Bowl V ????
