Besides domesticated cats, basically all animals were domesticated for the food they could provide. We don't think of it now, but the first evidence of domesticated dogs in Siberia were raised as livestock either partially or fully. Domesticated horses in the steppes have long been raised for meat and their mares milk drank and fermented. Then obviously goats, sheep, cattle, pigs and chickens were raised for meat. One domesticated meat animal not much considered now but very important historically was pigeon. Considering all you mentioned above Beaver would not be a great food source after being domesticated.

Why was there no brass age
@Rainbow_Oracle
@Rainbow_Oracle Ай бұрын
That's just the bronze age. The distinction between brass and bronze is a modernism. The timeline is copper->bronze/brass->iron->steel->"super" steels. Native copper alloys tend to have impurities, some of which make it stronger, so using the copper ores with contaminants that gave beneficial properties was just a natural outgrowth of normal copper smelting. Soon enough the concept of purifying and alloying became understood and purposeful used. This is basically the "classical age" of most civilizations, with simple copper usage belonging to the "ancient" era. The ancient copper alloys are tin-bronze, arsenic-bronze, and zinc-brass and some gold-bronzes. Never was there a period when brass was exclusively used, but the era of colonialism and the British empire was when brass usage was at it's peak, with the mines being available and productive, industrialization had been developed, smelting was well understood, naval brasses had been invented, and the need for precision instruments and other durable goods that didn't warp or corrode over time just sitting around led to it's (relative) popularity.

There was a copper age, also called the chalcedonic age. Then people figured out to add tin to the molten copper, to get a much stronger alloy. And then they figured out how to create fires hot enough (hint: charcoal) to soften iron ore. That's worth the trouble, because back then you could find small quantities of iron-containing minerals everywhere, whereas due to geology, copper and tin almost never occur in the same place. This means you need to have long-distance trade if you want a bronze industry, whereas an iron industry is quite hard to disrupt. Brass is arguably just a variant of bronze, where you mix copper with zinc instead of with tin.

There is also the fact that it wasnt until very relatively recent that we learned to intentionally domesticate animals Before the idea of evolution the idea of taking a bunch of (giving for exemple) deer and trying to actively select the less shy or the ones that flee the least to breed to create a deer that can become a pet/cattle would be completely alien Take a look at dog breeds for exemple, it was only after darwins theory of evolution and later the discovery of eugenics that a bunch of new dog breeds appeared. After all before they didnt know how to identify traits or wich one were genetic and wich were from experience of the individual (like a dog that knows how to do tricks) or how to introduce or remove desired traits and so on

I'm picturing a domesticated mastodon in an alternate history; basically a miniature version similar to the Asian elephant but can live in colder climates. It'd be great for protecting herds of sheep, goats, and cows from predators. [sigh] If only.

Many Welsh beaver hunters can confirm that Welsh beaver perfume is a bit fishy, and with good carroting the fur becomes soft and pliable. Owners of domesticated beavers find they have a voracious appetite for wood. However, they are difficult to find but much more desirable than sheep. Of course, being as mad as a hatter helps.🤣
