I've actually seen rear engine cars with front wheel drive. Its not very common but such thing does exist

Rear engine. - less insulation, since the car move forward away from heat. Light weight = efficient fuel. - just as easy to mantain compared to front engine. - rear wheel drive have opportunity to swap the whole thing : engine(incl trans) + differential + rear axle(incl tyre). With lending engine, it's not necessary to not use the car. - safer because the whole front, act as shock absorber -> front bumper. VW = people vehicle. Self explanatory name. It's intended to be use by people because it's save, cheap, reliable, easy to maintain, etc. Disadvantage: - baggage space - few brand
