National Treasure spoke to the hearts and minds of many a young history enthusiast - and action thriller fans everywhere - when it hit theaters in 2004. The box office smash featured Nicolas Cage as Ben Gates, an explorer who steals the Declaration of Independence in his quest to find a hidden treasure. A sequel, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, was released in 2007 and improved on the first film's box office return. Talk about a third film started shortly after, and although rumors have persisted over the years, nothing has come of those stories. Unfortunately for fans of the franchise, production appears to have stalled on the third film. Here's why it's unlikely that Disney will ever actually release National Treasure 3...

Book of secrets came out in what 2007 if my math is correct it's 2021 and my math usually isn't correct but I think that's 14 years I have never seen a franchise come back after 14 years I've only heard of a few remakes but I would just love for Disney to throw in math back in my face and make a third movie

I've noticed Spiderman wants to never complete a series it alawys stops in the middle I think six movies were planned in round 1 probably four in round 2 and why again do they have to make the franchise again I know avengers but still enough you can't have three Spiderman franchises in the first two decades of the millennium I guess you can if you never finish them

Personally, I love the National Treasure movies. They need to pick up a few years after the second one with Ben and friends finding what's on page 47. I think it should be about Atlantis being located in the Bermuda Triangle. The lost city's technology being what causes ships and planes to malfunction. They find it, solve some elaborate puzzle that brings the city back above the surface, and they all become massively rich and international heroes. And then just when the movie is ending Abigail tells Ben she's pregnant. The end...or is it?

Ollie Not Pauly, Wally or even Holly. Well, if you watched the first movie then you already know they don't care much about the money, having only taken 1% of the treasures value when they were offered 10%. And the second was about proving his great great grandfather innocent in the Lincoln assassination. Finding Atlantis would be more of an international treasure, as all of the findings would more than likely be divided up among museums across the world.

King Kolbae Well I would like to see more of Ben, Abigail and Riley. Spin off usually implies all new cast with maybe a small cameo of someone who wasn't really important. Movies like this don't do well and usually go directly to DVD and Blu-ray. They could market it better with the same cast and have a bigger budget to make it just as good as the first 2. Maybe just call it International Treasure instead of national treasure 3.

I had absolutely nothing against him until he was made fun of as a meme. I still really don't, but I must be honest and admit that I somewhat automatically take him less seriously when I see him, until I put that aside and just see him as an actor. He's got his own style in acting, but he's not bad.

Actually, the studio has written different sequels, but Tom Cruise turned them down. If there is a bad sequel of any movie, all the actors don't get more movie roles. People say that movie "Legend", was his worse movie. Watch the "directors cut" of "Legend", and you will have a much different view. It explains more of everything that was cut out and there was a actor in the film who won an Oscar for the role he played in the movie. It is like leaving out what the grown up Alien looked like in "Alien", and only seeing the little "Alien" coming out of John Hurt's chest durring dinner.

They release the concept so the movie can go into production, from what I took from the video was the movie was "loosely" being made at the start, but it either halted, or got canceled, or something along those lines. The concept itself has to have the green light before anything can happen with it.

National Treasure 3: Page 47 Plot: Benjamin Franklin Gates comes across President Truman + General MacArthur 1947 recovered + catalogued partial remains of the infamous Golden Lily map that was found by OSS operatives post General Yamashita execution in 1946 which contains clues to identify 175 Japanese Imperial treasure storage site across Phillipines that contains plundered historical treasure from across South East Asia and China.

I think a lot of people would love to see a Cage-led series. He's a splendid actor. We have emotional ties to National Treasure. Admittedly, there is a lot to compete with and scripts would be the most difficult. But I really think they could pull it off.

Disney is too busy with the harvesting of their "money tree crops (aka Star Wars and the MCU)" Why would they divert from this path? Each new harvest of those "money trees" is bigger and better than the last?

Tron has lots of potential with so much to mine and room for expanded world building. I know the Lucas brand has been raking in the money but truthfully I think only the MCU arm is putting out great content. With Lucas brand only Rogue One was actually great. Disney animated movies are good too, so I guess the problem is live action.

I say it’s bullshit, we waited 14 years for Incredibles 2 and it blew the other movies like Monsters Inc 2, Finding Dory and cars 2&3 out of the water I say NT3 will do that. Sure it won’t be Avengers End Game or Infinity War but it’ll still do an amazing job and beat the previous roles

As of about a year ago, the script is finished and Cage was reviewing it for his take. The 3rd film was delayed recently because of the TV series. Didn't even know there was one. But that's been cancelled already.

Both had several historical inaccuracies but they were both enjoyable. I enjoyed the first one best.

I say this both critically and objectively as well as a passionate National Treasure fan: The key - the absolute, #1 key - to making National Treasure 3 work and be successful in terms of dramatic narrative, and to give that goosebumpy feel of "coming full circle" to the audience would be to bring Sean Bean back as Ian Howe, since Ed Harris' character Mitch Wilkinson died in the climax of the last movie. I think it goes without saying that if there is ever - EVER - a 3rd movie, it will undoubtedly be the end. *Period.* So, why not acknowledge the movie that started it all by allowing Sean Bean to make a riveting return in Ben Gates' final adventure?
