WHAT IS TALK HEATHEN?
Talk Heathen is a weekly call-in television show in Austin, Texas geared toward long-form and on-going dialogue with theists & atheists about religion, theism, & secularism. Talk Heathen is produced by the Atheist Community of Austin.
Talk Heathen is filmed in front of a live studio audience every week at the Freethought Library of the Atheist Community of Austin.
The Atheist Community of Austin is organized as a nonprofit educational corporation to develop & support the atheist community, to provide opportunities for socializing & friendship, to promote secular viewpoints, to encourage positive atheist culture, to defend the first amendment principle of government-religion separation, to oppose discrimination against atheists & to work with other organizations in pursuit of common goals.
We define atheism as the lack of belief in gods. This definition also encompasses what most people call agnosticism.

And, when you think about it, that's the only reason anyone has to be a Christian. I mean, yeah, the idea of spending an eternity in paradise with God might sound good, but it's not going to draw in a lot of people because they might think you're bullshitting them. But appeal to their primitive fears by saying that if they don't believe then the only alternative is burning in fire for eternity and you'll get them hooked. Sell them on the dilemma and then offer them the only solution, and you've got a convert. Think about it, every Christian movie out there is basically about "saving" people from Hell because it seems like every Christian movie has that scene were the troubled atheist finally repents and accepts Jesus.

I think the correct question is: why do parents have to threaten their rebellious children with prison to try to keep them out? I think people know the answer perfectly well, but people's hatred for the God of the bible makes them blind to basics.

They hate the idea of a judge, who came down at their level to tell them everyone fails at righteousness, everyone failed hard, all came short of the glory of God, therefore all are guilty. They hate the idea of a judge, who came down at their level to pay the penalty in their place, so they can have life freely ... although it is an amazing news ... They like their little darkness, because the light exposes their deeds. They think they are good because they are not murderers, rapists, and because they like puppies ... how can they be bad? You should read what non-believers historians have to say about it. . *"It's not some concerned person trying to help someone-it's someone with no better argument than 'Believe what I believe or suffer'."* Hey another meme! with straws! You should believe you'll suffer if you continue committing all theses crimes, because the judge exists, and prison exists, and in some countries the electric chair does exist. Imagine you are a father who faced a guilty child rapist in court, and when you come out of it, you see smart asses who preaches there is no court, there is no judge, there is no ultimate punishment ... because it would be hurting ... so it must be bad ... and all these angry believers in justice are just angry-last-resorting-you, to believe what they believe : i.e justice will come around. Just throw down all your prefabricated fallacies for a while, and try to think about it honestly. And please don't take as a reference some weird megachurch sect whose sole purpose is to make money and deceive people ...

All the amazing complexities we discovered points to it, you have no excuse. The existence of God is the point with the most evidence in the world. But randomness is more comfortable ... Even if mathematicians, cryptologist, programmers, and the chaos theory proved randomness doesn't exists. . *We dislike the concept of god because of people like you using it as way to get us to be as gullible as you but we don't believe it exists."* i wonder how many scientific facts you actually checked yourself instead of _'gullibally(?)'_ accepted it ... what? none? Do you even know the scientific method stand firmly and exclusively on skepticism? The scientific method is based on the fact that you can't trust scientists, so you have to verify it yourself. Gullibility is more synonym of openness. Ungullibility is being closed to hope, when the subject is not materialistic, like the judgment of your sins. . *"I asked how many THEISTS have you argued with. You replied with atheists because you have never debated with theists."* My bad, i genuinely read ATHEISTS, it made more sense in the context, because _'theists'_ is one of broadest category on the world, and nothing conclusive and interesting ... i mean you would have to put the ones who think they are their own God in it ... So it was a foreseeable mistake, no need to jump on the strawman button. . *"Your strawman #3:* *Are you saying that theists DON'T threaten atheists with hell after their other arguments have failed?* *Because that shows you have never had this sort of argument or you would know better."* How's that a straw man? And this is already answered in the previous post: when a father tells about prison to his rebellious son, it's not a treat. But i told you you wouldn't let go easily of your straws. . *"Find me a source of history that confirms the bible stories in a way other than places."* the new testament material alone covers more than 40000 pieces, in 40 different languages, over a lot of countries, over several continents, over nations who were at war with each other ... - the jews confessed of the crime in their talmud - the grec/jewish historians of the first century talked about it etc ... look at what criteria historians look at to verify the solidity of old historic claims, it will help you. . *"The exodus has no evidence"* wooo! why would there be? gertrud making bread in 1529BC too, but it happened. . *"the flood has no evidence"* the hundreds of sites of forests of petrified trees standing across multiple of geological columns, is good evidence of it. But atheists prefer to ignore that completely ... at least in all online debates i've seen so far, introducing the topic. and petrified trees stand upside-down over 100Xthousands years of geological columns is even worse for you. . *"some of the places and people might have existed but but there is no good historical evidence for the bible unless you go to theist websites."* It is too far away in time yes, but using this as an argument is a mark of desperation ... the bible is not true because we have found ruins of all cities mentioned 2000BC ... it's weird you would consider this solid ... . *"You can show me judges,you can show me prisons and you can show me electric chairs.* *Can you show me hell?"* i will let you do your own list of things you believe in without seeing it. . *"If you believe in hell then you are showing you don't believe in your god through choice you believe in it because you feel there's no other option since who wants to spend an eternity in hell?"* You do not avoid hell because you believe there is a God ... You avoid hell because you believe God paid for your fault on the cross : which makes you avoid condemnation, since the debt is paid! And yes the fear of prison/execution keeps a lot people from it. You do not put your hand in the fire because you are afraid of the burn ... and it does not mean the fire is threatening you ... it's a matter of cause and consequences ... going to hell is a matter of cause and consequences! not blackmail! How many metaphors do i have to make until you abandon this foolish strawman? . *"If you want to believe in a god I have no problem with that but if you say to me that because I don't believe the same as you..."* nope ... still a matter of cause and consequences, not believe-like-me-so-i-can-feel-better strawman. . *"I'm going to go to hell that's just insulting to me that you think I'm going to be afraid of something that's made up."* yes! telling a criminal he will go to prison is an insult! ... or not! Man, you don't even believe what you just said ... . *"I have a big red button here and if I press it your head will explode.* *If you make another post I will press it.* *Will you dare to post again?* Oh please! push all the buttons at once! - will it be a i-don't-check-translations-and-ethymology-but-i-definitely-found-a-contradiction-in-the-bible? - will it be a zeitgeist fallacy? - or will it be a strawman? i'm curious

Because the "you're going to Hell" is both a position that we somehow deserve eternal punishment and an agreement that a system of eternal punishment is somehow "right" and acceptable. The threat itself is pretty meaningless in that we don't believe there IS a Hell, the issue is that the person saying it is passing a judgement on us that they think we're such awful, terrible, evil people....usually for the "sin" of just not believing the same thing they do....that we deserve Hell. Or they present the even more pernicious notion that all humanity is inherently evil and deserving of eternal punishment just for existing, because we're somehow all culpable for the actions of two people who, if they even existed (and the evidence shows otherwise) couldn't have known what they were doing. So that pisses us off, as it should anyone. The other factor is that the person saying it is often cowardly in that they then backtrack like crazy to say that it's not "them" who's saying it...it's "God", and they're only trying to warn us. They use false analogies like "if you were driving towards a cliff, the right thing to do would be for me to warn you." But that doesn't hold up...because what they're really saying is that we deserve to go over the cliff, we're going to be forced over the cliff, and they're just telling us about it. Add to that the idea that we are somehow CHOOSING to drive off the cliff, and we get a mish mash of cowardly excuses in support of a vile concept that no one should accept as justified. So yeah...we get angry.... One thing I keep asking these people is "If your religion is true, why does it need threats of Hell to encourage belief?" I never get an answer.

It is not the words, it is the intention. I do appreciate when someone religious say "God bless you!" as a sincere way of saying something nice to me. I know their intention is good, wishing good things upon me. I even throw a "You too!". The intention behind a "you're going to hell!" is just mean spirited and judgmental. With my close friends who are Christian, on the other hand, I know they are just having a laugh when they say "You're going to hell!". Same words, different intention, since I know they are not fanatic nutcases. On the other hand, it is easy to spot a "God bless you!" used with the same intention as a "Fuck you!".

It's not so much that they get angry at being told they are going to hell, it's more that the implication of that statement is that the person on the other side of the call seems to think that they are deserving of being tortured for all eternity for asking honest questions. If I get told I'm going to hell because I don't worship God, I'm not annoyed by that statement, as I don't accept hell even exists so the threat is empty. It's that by saying it, the person I'm talking to is implying I'm deserving of endless suffering for the finite crime of being who I am. And when questioned on that point, they won't ever admit to it, but tapdance around it so they can pretend to still be a good person who isn't rejoicing in the imagined suffering of another person.

@Fimbulvinter19
@Fimbulvinter19 4 жыл бұрын
@MindCreatedAll facts do indeed cut it, so let's lay some down. At the end of the day, the Bible is a story; words on a page. Claims about prior events. Until those events can be corroborated by outside evidence, they remain just that, claims, since the Bible can't be both claim and evidence for/of itself. Given that the Bible makes claims that run counter to how we understand the universe works, it is prudent to dismiss those claims until some evidence can be provided of their truth and correctness. Can you, without resorting to 'mysterious ways' type arguments, provide any evidence that the miraculous claims of the Bible are true? Atheists 'parade' their ignorance only in the sense that we are willing to admit that we don't know is sometimes the honest and correct response to a question. If I don't know the answer, saying that I don't know the answer is correct, as it can then be followed up with 'so let's find out.' By asserting that you already have an answer, God, you are precluding that follow-up, choosing to rely on faith rather than knowledge. If God does indeed exist, and we are as he made us, then he made me with the kind of skeptical mind that would fundamentally reject him on faith alone. And given that science has now developed working models that can sufficiently explain universal origin, planet formation, origin of life, and diversity of life that are accordant with reality, no God required, it's time that God stepped up and gave us something more than vauge claims to demonstrate his existence. Rather funny and telling that as our ability to make accurate recordings of past events improves, the number of God interventions and miracles dropped in equal inverse proportions. In short, you say facts cut it. Provide some on the side of your God. Not personal testimonies, not biblical quotes, not already debunked logical fallacious arguments. Facts, with measurable and verifiable data pointing to God, who if he exists, has nothing to fear from honest scrutiny. I'll wait.

I haven't watched the video yet but I thought that I'd pre-emptively provide my answer to the question, although I'd suggest that most people would get annoyed rather than angry. My issue is that it's a completely useless argument and, more often than not, comes across as a smug argument. Given that I don't think that a god exists, it should be quite clear that I don't think that heaven and hell are real, so telling me that I'm going to hell does nothing for the argument at all. If a Christian is genuinely concerned that I am going to hell then they need to provide some convincing evidence that their god actually exists rather than telling me I'll be tortured in a place that, as far as I'm concerned, doesn't actually exist. The thing is, it's generally not from genuine concern. It's usually dumb theists who make dumb arguments that have been rejected and they resort to that to make themselves feel better. It's basically "I win so there, nah nah nah". Fuck them.

If they only had "you get to live with God forever" that might bring in a few recruits, but tell them the only alternative is an eternity of torment & pain, and that will literally scare up a few converts. I really admire how consistently calm & considerate to the callers that the hosts are. I find the demeanor to be calming & welcoming which to me is so preferable to the shock jock format that has become so cliched. I grew up Catholic. Church every Sunday. CCD student then teacher and Catholic school. I have nothing but good memories of all of the above. I was fortunate to be surrounded by what turned out to be a great group of people some of whom I remain friends with today. In my twenties I went through a really lost period and being so close with the parish priests considered joining the ranks. In my heart I knew that despite the visits to the seminary and mentoring there was an obstacle that I was not going to be able to get past. You guessed it, celibacy. I just like women too much to even entertain the idea of deliberately abstaining. I got abstained enough non deliberately that it was just too much. However, I have a major addictive personality and become immersed in anything that catches my interest, good or bad. Thus I decided to take an unusual step for a devout Christian and actually read the entire Bible, twice actually. I'm certain that you guys know where this is going but to the rest I was extremely troubled by the time I finished Leviticus and by the time I got through Revelation I scheduled a meeting with my Pastor because I was in an utter tailspin regarding my faith. I explained to him that what I had read didn't sound like it was coming from the creator of time and space. Not by a long shot. The ritualistic slaughterhouse of all the animals in the Old Testament troubled me to no end as did the almost complete absence of any instruction of care and love for animals. Quite the opposite actually. As a major animal lover this really bothered me as did the conflicting accounts of the events in the Gospels as did the instructions of Jesus that I knew were utterly impossible for anyone to follow. An example would be not looking upon a woman with lust. Seriously? As I type this I can tell you that I do this 365 days a year and really never even considered trying not to. Lastly I just couldn't understand how a being of so much love and power would ever wish to see one of his living creations nailed to a cross. Rather, I would think that the very idea would be repulsive to such a being. Of course many volumes more but eventually I lost my faith altogether. I sometimes hope that I am missing something or that something will happen to cause me to believe again but I really don't see it and frankly it has had a horrible impact on my life. Everything just turned upside down and any sense of justice or reward or punishment or even purpose is at best murky to me now. I'm one of those nonbelievers who really wants to be wrong but unfortunately I don't think that I am and I have really looked into some wild concepts as a replacement to fill the void that I still feel. I just have so much trouble accepting the logical truth. On the other hand things sure do make a lot more sense to me now and I don't have to constantly find myself making excuses for this being failing to act. I think the last straw was when I overheard a conversation the subject of which was a loved ones surgery going surprisingly well. The woman stated that god must have guided the hands of the surgeon and I instantly became nauseated. I silently wondered if the lord would have guided the hands of someone with absolutely no medical knowledge. You guys choose to deal with a topic that gets quite volatile at times and lets face it, a lot of brainwashing, self deception and even threats of Hell and I think it speaks volumes of your character that you do so in such a civil and polite way. Well done and appreciated!

It's kind of interesting how when you really think about it somebody telling you you're going to hell is kind of like saying my dad who I love and respect is going to lock you in the basement and torture you forever. If somebody actually phrased it that way my natural reaction would be something like f you, but when somebody says oh well you're probably going to go to hell they get shocked if you say something like F you. I can understand an atheist being afraid of hell who was raised in a Christian household. Before they became an atheist, they were raised with this horrific image of hell, these graphic descriptions, people being put through the worst possible pains imaginable over and over and over again. That fear is then ingrained into their mind as they grow up, which, even if you now believe it’s all bull, may still make them feel scared as an automatic reaction. It’s like a weird form of PTSD. Some Christians came knocking on the door, and my father was the kind of person who liked to debate people like that rather than just tell them to begone. So he engaged with them. Somehow this doorstep debate got around to them asking him whether he'd had his children baptized, which he said he hadn't, so these Christians told him his children were therefore going to hell as a result of his decision. My father literally chased them off the property and up the road for saying such a vile thing about his children. So, yes, the "you're going to hell" thing can push a button in even the most mild-mannered debate-inclined atheist. Ultimately, it doesn't matter whether you personally believe that their concept of hell is real or not; what matters is that *they* believe it and that they condemn you to it in that belief.

I think there's a simpler answer: it's simply because its not conducive to discussion, while the show aims at discussing, and discussing honestly.

I've seen the videos where Matt and Jeff get angry at callers about hell. But it's not because they are told they're going to hell. It's because callers keep saying that g0d doesn't send them to hell, they send themselves. Also, it would be nice to actually hear Matt and Jeff explain

The idea that a person could be comfortable with other people going to Hell. It's either (1) they don't actually consider the implications of the belief or (2) they are sociopathic. The idea that anyone "deserves" this fate is pure sociopathy, particularly when the fate is controlled by a deity who could have created humans not to be capable of engaging in sin in the first place, but intentionally chose not to.

Clearly I agree with both Vi and Eric on this but the MOST offensive comment I was on the receiving end of was "You have an empty soul"' like I was somehow deficient in some human way? It makes me furious just thinking about it. I would dearly like to serve that person some 'harsh language' but I just actively avoid them and bite my tongue when I can't!! EDIT: Good for Joe. He sounds a really decent person.

Imagine I put a gun with blanks on the table, and someone enters the room thinking the gun has real bullets. The moment they pick up the gun with the intent to shoot me, even though I know the gun has blanks, I learned something about that person, and THAT is the part that angers me. It gets even worse in religions, where there are people standing around applauding that person.

It’s never about the belief it might be real or not, it’s the notion. The notion that just cuz you don’t share a specific belief or have a different religious belief, you are in fact deserving of the most obscene, horrid and violent act done to you because of it. The notion is what bothers Matt, Jeff, plus so many other atheists or ppl of different religious beliefs. What’s even sicker about that notion, is that they think it’s justified and an act love to be tortured. That’s the most unsettling and disturbing part that triggers me personally.

It’s one thing to go inside a burning house to rescue people that are sleeping inside without realizing that there’s smoke in their bedroom. And then another story when you break into someone’s house in the middle of the night and start screaming that the house is on fire while taking a dump in the living room and there’s not even a smoke anywhere around the house! Now try guessing which one is an analogy for when you tell atheists they are gonna burn in hell...

I'm putting this out there before listening to the response to the question. I think part of the reason athiests become angry when christians accuse them of going to hell is because of the associated baggage that comes with having used to have been a Christian, and then dealing with the religious trauma that often comes with it. I don't know about other people, but when I could not believe in christianity anymore, the fear of hell didn't just disappear overnight. It was something I struggled for about 10 years. Struggling with that kind of abuse for so long tends to leave scars.

I know what bothers me personally about the whole hell thing, is that I don’t know why anyone could follow such an immoral being. I don’t know Vi or Eric personally, but if a person/being would torture them I would be angry as I would for whoever is reading. To think it’s never ending makes that unforgivable for me.

1) Because it says the theist, despite their claims to the contrary, completely devalues my worth as a human being. 2) Building off the above: it says the theist thinks I deserve to be tormented forever in God’s final solution to the human problem... and they are completely fine with that.

That was a really great conversation! It got me thinking though - maybe some of the reactions to the ‘hell’ claim might be a bit over the top. I guess it is key to distinguish between a) whether your interlocutor personally believes you as an atheist deserve it or b) whether they are genuinely concerned for the wellbeing of your “soul” in eternity because they feel like that they can’t control the actions of their almighty god who has already written the rules. I think we need to be charitable in conversations with theists and not overly emotional.

The threat of hell is categorically absurd. If my children "broke bad" and then decided to turn their life around, I would always offer my love and support of that choice - that is what my definition of love encompasses. Any deity that would create a universe with me in it only to cast me into eternal and horrific torture merely because I don't accept them, all the while hiding from me for my whole life, is a deity that does not deserve my respect.

My family was not religious - so there was a running joke about hell. My great-grandfather started a trucking company - still going today and run by a number of my cousins. Great-grandfather was going to start up an ice water concession in hell, grandfather was going to truck down the ice, grandmother was going to deal with customers, and you get the picture. So I have never learned to fear - when I go to hell, there will be ice water. It may sound silly, but as a child, I was never afraid of going to hell.

The shows are meant to be different in that way, and the hosts acknowledge it. Like Eric said in this episode, some times it takes both kinds of responses. Some people respond better in harsher environments. Sometimes it actually encourages people to call in who wouldn't otherwise, and the same can be said about the gentler approach. I really appreciate both shows for what they do!
