I recently learned about whisker stress completely by accident. I was shopping for a cat bowl after breaking one and saw some that were called "whisker relief bowls." I did a quick Google search and realised that one of my cats was exhibiting all of the signs, and always had! I thought she was just picky about food (she is, but not as much as I thought) and was a weirdo who prefered to eat off the floor. Got one of the bowls and now she eats like a champ! After a couple of weeks I decided to grab another one for my boy to see if it would stop his behaviour of eating a few bites and then running off to torture the 3 girls. It did! I am a firm believer in whisker stress, though it doesn't seem to be an issue for 2/4.

Maybe that's why I've seen all these posts and memes about cats 'thinking their bowl is empty' when the bottom is showing, every time it always shows the middle so maybe it's uncomfortable for them to try to eat the food closer to the edges

I noticed when I feed cats with a bowl and the food pushes up the side they don't eat it as much. They complain as if there is no food. I then stir the same food into a pile using my hand with a claw machine like motion & boom there's more food.

I read that that was the reason they'll act as if their bowl is empty if there's only food around the edges of the bowl. Especially when I give them their "dinner" (wet food), I have to keep moving the food back to the middle of the bowl.

How about getting together with others like yourself and get a TNVR program going!?! Or, if you're like me, start small with a few at a time... Your county or city should offer programs that are really cheap. My county only charges $10 per cat, and will rent traps for a refundable $50 a week, although, I bought two traps (from Home Depot online, with free delivery) to keepat home to use when I need them.

@@noninoni9962 My mother, her secretary, and I had done a TNR program in my old town. My 3 year old, Simba, is actully the very first stray we managed to capture as a 3-4 month old kitten. We were working pretty hard to get the population under control and had shelters with heating pads and heated water bowls set up under both porches for the winter. But then, one day, we heard a pretty long series of gunshots (not totally uncommon in middle of nowhere) and we never saw the majority of them again. We suspect some twat went a picked them off one by one, but there wasn't a damn thing we could do about it.

Non-whisker-safe bowls tend to have cats meow to fill the center of the bowl while they ignore the kibble on the borders... no need for knowing WHY, we have a behaviorist proof. That cat PREFER bowls which don't annoy their whiskers in bowls which are non-whisker-safe is just the next logical step.

I feed my cat by putting the food in weird things like jars, small boxes, etc. and my girl pulls the pieces out with her paw. It probably wouldn't be a solution for every cat, but enrichment could be a solution for whisker-unfriendly bowls. Just get rid of the bowl! :3 To underscore the important point of the original post though: if it's not working for your cat, fix it. If it works for your cat, it's fine.

I've had several cats who point their whiskers forward when they're pooping. I only notice this because I've had several cats who use the litter box while I'm on the toilet. I mean it's obviously associated with grunting but I wonder if it helps or if humans make a similar face but simply lack the dramatic whiskers. Anyway, it's hard not to laugh at cats when they do that but I try not to because I try not to embarrass them. It is truly hilarious though, especially on fluffy fat cats. lol

Ashley Danielle in the event that Jackson doesn’t cover this subject in the near future, I just want to help you out with your situation if I can. Your cat’s skin is sensitive as is our own, and for that reason I never have used wire brushes on a cat’s fur, just in case that’s the kind of brush you have. You could check out Jackson’s merchandise for grooming aids to see what he recommends, as well. I have had many cats in the last 40+ years, & always have used a brush that has “nubbies” on the ends of the bristles, & brush in the direction that their fur lays. I started out the first grooming on a cat by petting & stroking my cat until she was purring & relaxed. With one kitty, I rubbed catnip on the brush & let her play with it for awhile before I ever used it on her fur. *The slow way is the fast way. *Always remember that rushing into or forcing your cat to tolerate brushing is a sure way to cause them to forever hate it.

Orquidea Please(!) do not cut any hair from your cat. Don’t trim it, and especially don’t shave your cat! The reasons are that their fur keeps them cooler in the heat of summer, as well as warmer in the cold of winter. It’s their insulation against the elements. Please do not do this to your cat! The sun could cause their skin to become sunburned. Nature gave them their coat for survival reasons, so we should not interfere with their natural adaptations.

It would be amazing to have detailed info on what he does to keep these cats in such great shape for so long!

Whisker stress is 100% a thing, our girl used to take out chunks of meat and drop them on the floor to eat until we changed to shallow wide bowls, same with water. Both of them were so much more interested once we changed to a wider, shallower bowl

I didn’t know cats’ vision was so bad up close. This makes my Eponine, of blessed memory, more understandable. I’d play with her with a laser and she’d “lose” it when it got close to her. Since it has no substance, her whiskers couldn’t pick it up. My Maleficent doesn’t seem to have that problem, though.

So much of a cat's expression is in their whiskers. Whisker's out, nose wrinkled is my favorite one of our girls make when the scritches are good. Droopy whiskers? Worry. Spread and stiff? Alert. LOVE THEM. Each shed whisker is a crafter's prized gift, too. XD

Hello, Jackson, I just wanted to say thank you for all your videos and advice! I rescued my first cat, Bangs (my profile pic) when she was two years old using your advice. She was so scared of everyone, but I used the glasses trick you used in one episode and let her sniff them and she grabbed hold of me and wouldn't let go. She's still skittish and only trusts me, but I always say we rescued each other because she brings me more positivity in my life than I've ever known. Thank you for all you do!

Hey Jackson, could you do a video that’s about helping your current cat learn to enjoy/embrace new kitten(s)? We’re at a point where they tolerate each other and play after doing your introduction techniques. Sometimes, however, the adult gets into angry and jealous fits. My adult cat is clearly eating quickly/vomiting because he’s worried about food scarcity, even though he gets fed regularly. He’s also feeling jealous of interactions I have with the new kittens, but doesn’t seem to want to join in when he is given attention. I’d love and appreciate any help! You da best!

@April, you won't believe it, but literally less than 12 hours after I posted the above comment, I'm facing the same situation... again. My wife and I have a 4 month-old kitten (a girl) and today as I went for a walk I came across this barely month-old cat... had to take him, as he had clearly been abandoned and it's pretty cold here, he wouldn't survive long on his own. So now our kitten is super stressed and jealous and we'll have to go through the whole process again. Oh, well...

Whiskers are so very expressive. The cutest thing I still think is a kitten, ears pricked up and forward, neck stretched, eyes wide, whiskers all the way forward, almost straight ahead. AKA the "What is that?!" pose. It's a non-nervous, but intense curiosity. And those whiskers sell it, you almost feel how they are expressing the cat's curiosity pulling it forward.

Thanks for this info.. That has been my all time question on myself. I haven't tried to search because they didn't say good info of what i should be knowing about whiskers.. Since young i tend to cut clean up those hair(what i know about) as part of grooming on my house pet amd there nothing wrong about ot as i observed and im having fun looking them so clean and tidy with no excess whiskers.. But now finally got my brain educated enough.. I will no longer cut those whiskers on my 10year old "puspin"(pusangpinoy our name called to stray cat in Philippines ).. I've so much enjoyed watching all your vlogs and getting know more about cats.. Im a cat lover since i was a newborn who save me also from rodents.. Keep this did you know!! Fact about my meow.. Love it so much

As an almost completely blind person, sometimes I feel like whiskers could come in handy. I would totally sport the longest ones ever with pride. There have been times that I’ve accidentally pulled on her whisker just a tiny bit and it always makes me cringe because I didn’t know all this stuff, but I knew enough that they were sensitive.

I knew about whisking because I have also been a ratherd in my life. The ratties would actively search with their whiskers because their eyesight was crap... and once they learned that it tickled and got them belly rubs, they'd use them to get the hoomins' attention.

JACKSON, PLEASE HELP! One of my kitties is BITING THE WHISKERS OFF my poor Kiko! It took me years to catch him in the act (caught on "tape"), which solved the mystery of "why were Kiko's whiskers breaking?" Even the pricey allergy specialist vet didn't know, and guessed that he broke them while over-grooming. Yes, he has that issue, too, BAD!He's been over-grooming terribly for about 6 years, and he's now 14. I have tried oodles of variations of food, medications, shampoos, etc. to try to solve this. I really wish I could help my sweet sweet boy. He could be so much more comfortable. I feel like a "bad cat mom" because I haven't been able to resolve these issues. I hope you're able to help because I feel as if I've tried everything. Thanks for whatever you might be able to offer! Love your show and channel!

I have been unable to find information about a set of whiskers that apparently you don’t know anything about either. I have a black and white tuxedo cat with white hair scattered around her back, sides and tail. Every now and then I look at her and think, I should pluck those out so she will be solid black cat. Well, I never did and I’m glad I didn’t because I noticed that they stand out further than her black hair, they have a different texture, are stiff, and apparently, yep, they are whiskers! I thought she was unusual. Nope. My calico cat has them also although it’s harder to see. But they’re there if you know what to look for. I have lived with cats for over 60 years and this is the first time I noticed them! What kind of research you can find about those because Google knows nothing, and Jackson should. .:). Love ya!
