Many musicians, especially Guitar players, take for granted WHY chords work the way that they do. It doesn't take a genius to predict what the next chord might be in a progression, but it does take a genius to have complete control over manipulating the audiences expectations. Having the knowledge and power to do this, is exactly what I'll talk about in this video. If you can hang in there until the end, you'll be saying "ooooohhhhh" ;)

How do melodic tendencies apply to modes, like dorian? Is the root note just inherently unstable?

Exactly the same way, providing that the harmony is speaking mode language. Even non-modally, if you’re playing over the IV Chord of A major, the A note is no longer the root note. The function of that note is now the 5th of the IV Chord. Note functions always change depending on the harmony/modes 🙂

Any guitar can be used for John Mayer songs. It’s not the guitar, it’s your fingers. Having the right pickups help a lot though. John uses a bright pink Jackson on occasion and he makes that sound awesome! 🙌
