You know something's wrong when the entire point of Season 3 is to save Iris' life and yet nearly the entire audience is begging the writers to kill her.

Well, I AM an Iris West hater. And to be clear, I think it's 100% the writers' fault. Candace Patton does fine. It s not just season 4 either, she's been like this the whole time. Remember her Season 1 temper tantrums about Joe, Barry, and Eddie keeping secrets from her? Yeah, now remember at the beginning of the season she was keeping her relationship with Eddie secret from Barry and Joe. Hypocrite much? Or remember the time she sabotaged Barry with Linda? Remember how she never loved Barry until she found out he was Flash? Remember how in season 2 she tried to sabotage Wally from becoming Kid Flash after weeks of training, and wouldn't even let him help SAVE THE WORLD FROM ALIENS, even though he was easily the third most powerful person around behind Barry and Kara? Then flash (pun intended) forward to season 4, she gets her powers for less than a day, and throws a tantrum when the team doesn't want to instantly throw her out in the field. Or there's the way she gets EVERYTHING without earning ANYTHING as a character. Reporter despite no qualifications. Superhero brother/boyfriend (seriously, how is that not creeping more people out). Leader of Team Flash despite zero experience or credentials (as you mentioned). And she's SO DUMB. She strolled out to confront Samurai-bot when she knew Barry was crippled with mental illness because...why exactly? Did she believe she has the power to cure mental illness? Evidently she does according to the Flash writers as Barry magically recovers. She should be down at the psych ward curing other mental patients. She ordered Cisco and Caitlin to attack the metahuman wing of the prison in the breakout episode despite there being a power field there that would eliminate their powers and they have no combat skills outside their powers. Massive leadership fail. Iris is complete deadweight on this show. She consistently does and says terrible and stupid things, and yet despite all this, everyone on the show acts like she's earned respect. The Arrowverse shows hold Barry and Iris up as the "gold standard", yet she's been AWFUL to him over the four seasons.

How many more side characters have to forced into main roles for the purposes of terrible relationships before these idiotic writers realise how terrible they really are.

I don't think they've ever written Iris well, I don't think they even know who Iris is, look to the comics, she's a Lois lane wanna be, in the comics she even makes quips about how she needs to scoop Lois to the story. they did the Iris reporter thing on the show but it was so rushed and short lived, now they're trying to make her the leader?!?! what qualifies her for that over the genius' that work there, I like her but she's written really piss poor.

I'm watching episode 4 of season 4, right now. My issue with Iris is that we are seeing her WAY TOO MUCH. Her character has virtually no real utility in the show....nor should she. Her character is of the sort that you shouldn't see her very often - I mean, doesn't she have a job or something?..

I agree with you mostly. First I want to say I am black female with my own Flash and Iris West Fan page. I am not a Iris hater, but I am a Iris West WRITER hater. The writer's have FAILED Iris West. I love Iris West of the Comic and Candice Patton is a superb actress. But Barry Allen is the Flash and everyone else is Team Flash . Yes he needs them and they are important, But Barry is the Flash. I get Iris being hurt but she should have understood that he had to go. I didn't like all the she didn't want Cisco to bring him back bit. They should have added that to their deleted scenes because it didn't go over. And the finally the leader at Star Labs I was shook! She has no technical or scientific aptitude and no leaderships skills, Let's be real, she wrote a blog and worked at the newspaper, then hung around the lab for a year asking questions and having aha moments. . I yelled as loud as everyone else for her development. But the Leadership move was illogical in every way. Cisco would have been the logical choice. Everyone else in the show has been dumbed down to accommodate this idiotic writing including Joe West and THE FLASH, which is show is about. Sara earned her leadership, Supergirl and her sister bring it and Felicity is annoying as hell but she has mad hacking skills. But this move with Iris was ludicrous. They need to develop her in her skill set and the role she was meant to be in as a STRONG, IMPORTANT, STAR Reporter. (Oh I wanted to add I actually thought the funeral scene was funny...awkward but funny, Barry was not feeling it but he was along)

Everyone needs to understand that they are never going to get rid of Iris West. She’s a major character in the show as Barry’s wife and whether anyone likes it or not she’s the leader of the team. Cisco and kid flash were out fighting while Barry was gone she had to call the shots on where they go and what to look for. I don’t personally dislike iris she has a very complex role there are times where even I am not fond of her attitude but it is good to see a famale role rise. However, I do wish they used Caitlyn more she is an amazing character to develop both as Caitlyn and Killer Frost!

So much of this could have been scrapped and instead that space could've been used to give Wally a good arc build up but instead we got this. Wally aka Kid Flash deserves more of a story. Also, thank you for addressing the double standard with Barry and Iris and their marriage. I didn't like how Barry got railed on for proposing out of fear but Iris got a pass and a high five for doing the same thing. Just my thoughts here.

I don't hate Iris, but because the writers are not doing a good job writing her character, some of the best characters of the show have been put to the side such as Cisco, Caitlin and Joe and I don't want the writers to ignore their potential. I feel like the West Allen relationship has been too much this season. I like Cisco/Gypsy better lol but I'll always love the show. The writers need to do a better job with Iris and have her passion for writing and being a reporter to come back so fans can like her again

I am so annoyed with the character, that I have to forward every scene she talks.. I wish Savator would have killed her

In the comics Barry has an undying love for Iris. On the TV show, they had them grow up as Sister and Foster-Brother... creepy. He pouty behavior has me hating her character over and over, even when I try to return to show, she reminds me how much I dislike the character the way she's been written. Enough of her... Cisco... Vibe could be such a more powerful character if he would spend a little time learning how to make his portal jumps faster... Like NIGHTCRAWLER DID in the movie X2... he's in front of you, then he's behind, then he's above, then he's portalling villains 25 feet in the sky, and drops them, or disorients them... he could be as good a hero as the Flash.

The way they write their relationship, it makes it seem like they hate each other in real life and its bleeding into the acting a bit. The relationship doesn't seem real. They don't really talk to each other like a couple madly in love like in the comics. Or like they just met each other and started dating for a few weeks or so and all of a sudden got married. It's like they don't know the deepest darkest secrets about one another and love each other all the more.

Pilot episode has Iris as a wannabe journalist who says she will make up a quote when refused an interview. That pretty much sets the tone for her character to not be too high on doing the right thing. Everybody except Iris was interested in saving Iris's life, while Iris was taking even more stupid risks for the heck of it. Fans were rooting for Savitar the super-villain to succeed. "We're the flash" was the only thing they walked back, I think. She gets away with everything else.

What qualifies Iris to be the leader?

It all boils down to her being the least qualified person to lead a team of geniuses and super powered people. They never built her character for that role, they inserted her into this position after realizing that she had absolutely nothing to do, but couldn't be taken off the show because she's Barry's love interest. But you're not allowed to just be a love interest anymore, so she had to be forced into a different position, so now she's a glorified motivational speaker. You're right when you say that she would have been way more useful as a character if she developed as a reporter, and used that skill set to help the team. Because at least her character was built up to be that person from the beginning.

It's obvious that Iris never loved Barry until the writers forced it. She literally chose Eddie over him. She *actually* says she sees them as "brother and sister" in season one (I believe). Then AFTER she finds out he is the Flash and AFTER she finds out they are married in the future *and* on a parallel earth and AFTER her fiance dies does she MIRACULOUSLY fall in love with him. I'm glad Barry gets the girl he loves but its clear the feelings aren't equally felt which is what makes me upset. Plus her always bossing everyone around when she is the least qualified of everyone on team flash doesn't help.

As a woman who has disliked iris since season 1, I can tell you that I disliked her because of all of the relationship bullshit. Barry tells Iris how he feels about her, shes not interested. The second Barry gets a girlfriend SUDDENLY she likes him. It was written horribly. I stopped watching the show not long after bc of the relationship bullshit. No thanks.
