I've not even watched this video yet but I can already tell you the answer: because grams doesn't make a damn bit of sense regarding how much yarn you need to complete a project. Even among yarns of the same "gauge" (4 weight, dk weight, etc,) both grams and yardage vary. But only yards will tell you how much you actually need with any amount of ACCURACY. So THANK YOU Crystal for always saying how many YARDS your projects take, as it is most appreciated!!

Exactly! Linear measurements are appropriate for meaauring linear objects like yarn and fabric. But if I wanted to buy unpun wool to spin into yarn myself, then I would expect it to be measured by weight like flour and sugar. Thanks for using yards - it makes my life easier!

I'll never forget a trick my mama had to use more than once. She was making a blanket and came up short in yardage. Of course, in trying to buy more yarn, the dye lots were different and the colors were also just different enough to be noticeable. So she'd have to add to both ends of the blanket in another color altogether, just to make it look right.

My grandma taught me how to crochet, her way of purchasing yarn was always the same…red heart yarn buy all they have of those colors…she always had way too much…i didn’t learn how to determine yards n stuff until after watching your videos…to me ounces and grams are weights…yards and meters are length…why are they being compared? Thank you Crystal for teaching us how to determine how much yarn we need in yards!

I am Americamn and understand both, but the problem is that going by weight instead of length is not consistently the same length. Each weight can be far different than the length in yards 'or' meters.

@@lauriekurad Right... We can use meters and convert yards to meters and vice versa depending on the label, in case it only lists one of the linear measurements, but the weight tells us nothing.

A friend thinks 460 yards is a better deal because it gives more yarn than 230 yards - but they're both 100 grams. 460 doesn't give more yarn, it just means it's a lace weight, and I'd rather crochet with the 230 yards worsted weight yarn. Same amount of yarn, different thickness, different results! This is a great video!

I agree. Not everyone crochets or knits as loose or tight as another person. I have already gone so far as to measure out say 15 yards of yarn, and then crochet whatever stitches I'm gonna be doing in a pattern just to see how far that amount would get me. Some types of stitches are yarn hogs and others are not.

Because I'm in the Netherlands, I go by meters and I also don't care about grams just because of what you made very clear but once, I was in a yarn store and almost got into an argument with the lady of the store because she could not understand why I wanted to know how many meters were in a ball. Long story short, I just left and bought my yarn somewhere else. I thought it wasn't worth fighting over meters or grams. 😂😂😂

I always go by yardage as well. If a yarn is heavier or lighter, it will change the weight, but yardage gives you the length of yarn you need to complete the project. Weight varies too much.

I started knitting when I was a lot younger (70 yrs young now…. ) I was born in England and have lived in Australia for the last 37 years. Knitting patterns were written for a specific yarn and required x amount of balls. I’ve only just figured out how to crochet properly after many failures over the years. I think the American system of numbered weight yarn is great…..it seems more flexible to work with. I work with both imperial and metric systems. If something is written in metric it’s so simple to convert it to imperial and vice versa. I totally agree with what Crystal is saying…..not all #4 weight (or any other weight) yarns are equal. So much simpler to use the yardage or meterage. Thanks for all the info Crystal ❤

Excellent info! Different fibers weigh different amounts. Different construction methods will also give different results. A chain spun cotton will weigh more than a roving acrylic. A denser ply weighs more than a looser ply. When planning a project it's important to buy enough in the same dye lot and yards/meters is a better measurement unless you're super experienced and have a really firm grasp on guessing by weight.

Gosh, I've never paid any attention to grams or ounces. I've always looked for yards and thickness/weight. Today, while putting away some yarn I ordered, I noticed that the tote containing just my bamboo yarn was hefty compared to the others. When I pick up yarn at the store I have never noticed one kind being that much heavier than another. So, yeah....what you say makes a lot of sense. Thanks, Crystal.

🤷‍♀️ I learned to crochet by watching KZfaq videos and a fair few of them were this channel. Australian yarn goes by ply not like your US 4 weights etc, so I get lost on that anyway. Once people start talking grams as opposed to length, I'm throwing my hands up. Its so much easier for me personally when someone gives the amount of yarn in length. Yardage is so much easier guesstimate into metreage. I really appreciate you Crystal, you always go the extra 🙏

Wondered if the grams on the label is more for the yarn companies manufacturing process? So I did a Goggle search. Found an article saying the "labels are more guidelines than crystal balls". The FTC mandates that 1. Fiber content 2. Yardage 3. Weight and 4. Country of Origin be included on yarn labels. And in manufacturing yarn is sold by weight not yardage. Seems the amount of yarn needed is determined by the user (tension) and the project (what you are making and the stitches used to make it). As Jack Sparrow said "it's more of a guideline"!

Well, I guess I’m on Team Ounce/Gram! 😂 most of my stash seems to be oddments, leftovers, and scraps - much of it donated, and none of which have labels to tell me how many yards they have. So the only way to measure yarns with no labels is to weigh it. Knowing the yards can be useful - but only as long as you have the label. Otherwise, the scale is essential.
