LilRando yes she physically stole ur land... ok. Well she shouldn't live in Japan because she bombed it as well. She is an American citizen with immigrant ancestors. Yes white people stole Native American land. However do u want her to take a heritage test to see if her ancestors stole the land. Mine didn't even arrive on American land until the 1940s

LilRando American can mean a variety of things. First meaning your definition. Second American citizen for which Rachel is because she was born and raised in the United States. Third: American as a language for which has been modified into English. Yes European and American English is different in ways. I'm sorry but if she was European than she could freely just go to Europe without a visa.

I just realized, Jun can make both the “L” and the “R” sound perfectly. He only has trouble *hearing* the difference. That’s quite interesting. For me it’s usually the opposite - I can hear that I’m saying it wrong, but I can’t seem to say it right because I don’t know how to make the sound.
@M0du5Pwn3n5
@M0du5Pwn3n5 3 жыл бұрын
This is normal when you're trying to understanding a foreign languages that has a phonemic distinction that your language doesn't. You can learn where you're supposed to put your tongue for each sound, so you can make them accurately with some practice, but it's almost impossible to "hear" the difference, especially in fluent speech.

@margraveofgadsden8997
@margraveofgadsden8997 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, that word is extremely difficult for me to say as an American English speaker. Also, it’s not a word most people would use. Dreary is an adjective usually reserved for a place or the weather; I can’t imagine anyone choosing to use it as an adverb. “She drearily crawled out of bed.” It just sounds a little off, right?
@LabGecko
@LabGecko Жыл бұрын
@@margraveofgadsden8997 as an American who has learned two other languages and pieces of another three, yes, you are correct. Drearily sounds wearily like a different language's word. Interesting etymology on it though. From wiktionary: _"From Middle English drery, from Old English drēoriġ (“sad”), from Proto-Germanic *dreuzagaz (“bloody”), from Proto-Indo-European *dʰrews- (“to break, break off, crumble”), equivalent to drear +‎ -y. Cognate with Dutch treurig (“sad, gloomy”), Low German trurig (“sad”), German traurig (“sad, sorrowful, mournful”), Old Norse dreyrigr (“bloody”). Related to Old English drēor (“blood, falling blood”), Old English drysmian (“to become gloomy”)."_

That's nothing, my ex-wife, standing in the front row at a B-52s concert, kept calling out 'Lock Robster' after they finished their set (and she's caucasian)! To be fair to her, she did have a few wines and to the B-52s credit they actually performed the song. Was a good night all round, and hearing her say that was really funny.

Sony is a Japanese company, though of course they did give their 1996-present console series an English name with a Japanese pronunciation. Same goes for Ibanez, who are a Japanese guitar manufacturer with a not-so-Japanese-sounding name. Roland is Japanese but doesn't sound like it, but their competitor in the synthesizer market, Yamaha, actually have a Japanese-sounding name, albeit heavily anglicized by Americans. Also, L and R would be eru and aru most likely.

I've noticed that. You guys say coppee instead of coffee. You also switch out V's for B's. So vanilla becomes banilla. And yet the one letter is pronounced in two different ways, like m/b, p/b, and k/g, as well as l/r (both of which you seem to have but is just represented by the one character, which to make it even more confusing looks like a 2). And then there're the times when you're not speaking either vowels or consonants but are just making strange sounds. I can't reproduce those sounds at all. Hell, I don't think I'm even hearing them right.

I don't know if you want a more linguistic explanation of why but here it goes so brace yourselves: Basically, the japanese R sound is called an alveolar tap, which is a sound that in English we don't have a letter for. HOWEVER, this sound DOES exist in English. If you have an american accent and you say, "what's the matter" that /tt/ in matter is pronounced like the japanese tap. (for example, when you say 'native' at 1:48, that T is atually an alveolar tap, which is the japanese R sound. SO why do Japanese people mix up English L and English R? In Japanese these three sounds are completely interchangeable, there is no L sound and there is no English R sound, so if someone was to say KokoRo (with an English R) or KokoLo (with an L) They'd still process it as 心 with an alveolar tap. It's not the 'correct' way to pronounce it but their brain still processes it as such. Changing the sounds doesn't affect the meaning at all so in the japanese speaker's mind they are all "One sound" and so when they learn english their japanese R tap gets mapped into all the L and R slots. In English, we do have a distinction between L and R (red/led) so to us it seems bizarre that people might see them as one sound. I don't know if I've explained myself properly but to illustrate i'm going to compare with an example from spanish into English. In Spanish, most speakers don't differentiate between J Y or ZSH. For example, Pollo 'chicken' can be pronounced as "Poyo" "Pojo" or "Pozsho" because in our minds it's just one sound and so, when speaking "yell" may be pronounced as /jell/ or /yell/. This all works backwards as well when listening, not only when speaking. Our brains just try to work with what they know from their mother tongue.
@MarioFanGamer659
@MarioFanGamer659 7 жыл бұрын
You could have mentioned that the English R is an approximant and the L a lateral approximent i.e. very similar so the R-L confusion is justified in English.
@unadormilona
@unadormilona 7 жыл бұрын
iagonizante Thanks for the linguistic info. Is the Japanese phoneme a lateral tap? That would also add to the confusion. Just out of curiosity, do they have multiple allophones or just one? Also, which linguistic environments affect their production? (Using your Spanish example, /d/ -> [ð]/V_V).
@unadormilona
@unadormilona 7 жыл бұрын
MarioFanGamer Not to mention English has multiple acceptable allophones for /r/ and two common /l/ allophones (velarized and non-velarized). Really, you have to feel for learners, like Jun ^^, who come from an L1 background without this distinction.
@ForbiddenFish
@ForbiddenFish 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting explanation! Just wanted to point out that in the Spanish example, it also depends in what region you are in. In Mexican Spanish, we always pronounce "pollo" as "pojo". If you're in Argentina, then it will be "pollo" as "pozsho".
