Hi Wheezy, remember that you can have a spectrum between a perfect airway and sleep apnea. You could have allergies, frequently enlarged tonsils, allergies, a deviated septum, enlarged adenoids or tubinates. I would recommend consulting a good ENT.

For what it's worth. I didn't wake up gasping, I didn't snore. I just...wasn't going into deep sleep phases at all. Apparently it was because my brain would catch the apnea episodes before they could even manifest, literally a second or two, and would put me back into sleep phase 1 so I was half awake. So the moment I crossed phase II, it would kick me back to I. We were only able to tell the underlying cause with a in-lab sleep study. Sleeping with a cpap, has completely my eliminated my need for naps. There is a significant difference. Just...If you are having sleep problems, even if you are "fairly certain" you don't have sleep apnea, just get a sleep study. Sleep study can find all sorts of things.

I don't snore. My doctors also doubted that I have sleep apnea. The sleep study revealed moderate central sleep anea (my brain just stops telling my body to breathe). I always had a hard time falling asleep and staying asleep, and always clocked myself as a light sleeper. The study showed I would wake up every ten minutes because my O2 was dropping so low. I trust you to know yourself best, just sharing my experience because your experience sounds so much like mine. My CPAP literally had me sleeping like a rock through the night on day 2 and woke up alert. It's absolutely wild how much everything changed!

I used to think that people who napped were lazy quitters. Than I developed an autoimmune disorder, along with having a lot of young kids at home, and a baby and chronically sick child who were up at night a lot. A sweet mom friend pulled me aside and told me that naps are crucial for moms to function. Napping was the most bizarre thing to me at first. I had to make myself do it and I felt so restless and lazy, until I actually fell asleep and napped. My friend told me to do it everyday for two weeks, and it changed my life. I was so far behind on sleep, I was always exhausted. After about a month of napping daily, I felt so much better!

Wow, thanks for the video. My sleep issues are similar to yours and my husband tends to sleep like your wife. The only thing that has helped my sleep is to read before bed, and when I wake up in the middle of the night (to use the bathroom), I have to make sure I don't start thinking. If my brain wakes up and I start to think about life, work, etc, I can't fall back to sleep.
@PrettyTranslatorSarahMoon
@PrettyTranslatorSarahMoon 6 ай бұрын
I've always had the same sleep issues as Craig and my followers like to (mis)diagnose me, too, but at least in my case, I'm pretty sure it's neurodivergence. I have a Very Noisy Brain that makes it hard for me to fall asleep, and I'm very sensitive to sounds, smells, light, etc., which makes it very difficult for me to stay asleep (and when I wake prematurely, I'm almost always tossing and turning at least an hour before my brain finally shuts up enough for me to sleep.) I find a repeated guided meditation helps shut up my brain (a story/fantasy I run through that's the same every time) and blackout curtains, smooth covers, lack of cats (T_T), an amazing pillow, and a fan are a must for me to stay asleep. I also take naps daily, though I never fall asleep (it's impossible.) It's literally just to breathe, relax, hydrate my poor dry eyes, and listen to music (I find loud/fast stuff like metal to be the most soothing.) I'm sure Craig is tired of his fans trying to diagnose him, but I don't think I've ever heard him mention ADHD and I've often wondered if he's on that spectrum and if that's at least part of his sleep issues.

Craig have you ever tried the coffee nap? Supposedly it can help with the post-nap grog. The theory is you have a cup of coffee right before you take a nap and by the time the caffeine kicks in, you should be walking up from said nap all like bright eyed and bushy tailed. I think the average time frame is a half hour from when your head hits the pillow, but I have to assume based on however long caffeine takes to hit for someone would change that.

Wheezy!!! I have SO much to say here! First of all: YOU ARE NOT ALONE!!!! This is me! This is SO me! And has ALWAYS been me. In fact, it is well known that Hittel's are night owls. I come from a long line of night owls. When I was a little, little kid, my parents would hear me playing and hear me say "Heeeeere's Johnny!", and wonder how I even knew that. When I was in HS and college and I worked in the malls (in Paramus, NJ, which is the shopping mall capital of the world), I would work until closing (even at the holidays which means getting out around 1am sometimes), and I would pop into my grandparent's house on the way home (they lived near the mall). I would just walk in the front door and watch TV with them for a few hours. No need to call. No need to worry if it was too late. I heard, a while back, that nightowls are "the firekeepers". We are the ones who, back in the caveman days, or even probably "Little House on the Prairie Days", would stay up late, while everyone else was sleeping. Keeping the fires going. Keeping a lookout for predators. (Probably with our doggo companions!). I really liked that. I've always held onto that image. I think it's probably true. Anyway, I AM looking at retirement soon. I am a middle school teacher and have spent my entire career EXTREMELY sleep deprived. And it has been TORTURE. I have said for.....well, pretty much my entire life....that there needs to be two shifts of work/school. That will never happen. But those of us who are either night owls, biphasic sleepers (ME!!!!!!), or just have crazy sleep schedules, pay the price. For the entirety of our lives. Not just with our help, but with the shaming from people who have "normal" sleep schedules or are early birds. So, I get up, go to school, force myself to pretend to be awake and lively all day, then come home and literally FACE PLANT for four hours. Pretty much daily. And then nothing gets done. I suffer from migraines. I do have sleep apnea, but I despise CPAP machines. And whether I get that nap (also known as the other half of my sleep), I will still be wide awake at night. Usually dealing with anxiety. I cannot WAIT until the day I can just let my body sleep when it wants to. And I really don't care what anyone has to say about it. And I'm totally going to try Beam. Thank you! And thank you for this video! And the one on biphasic sleep. I have known about it for years, and FIRMLY believe this is how my body wants to sleep. When I retire from teaching, I probably will still work. But I'm going to have to find something that I can do when my body is rested and ready to work. I deserve and need that. And so do you. OH, and Edited to Add: I have had three sleep studies done. Sleep studies are useless if you can't sleep during them. It's not like I haven't tried. First one, I only got three hours. It was "enough", but not really. Second one, I don't think I slept at all. Third one was supposed to be all night, and then something called a "naps study" during the day, to see how quickly I pass out when asked to nap. But because I could not have caffeine the whole previous day, I had a massive migraine that night and did not sleep. Because I did not sleep, the naps study was canceled. That's the part that would have been the most helpful!!!! I'm done with sleep studies.

Afternoon Craig! Recovering bad sleeper, cat-nap lover (rarely possible), and once multi-cup coffee consumer here. After years of living that lifestyle, my heart gave me a wakeup call with night palpitations. Despite exercising on a regular basis, I was informed by my cardiologist that coffee isn't so much a stimulant as it is a trick-your-brain-into-thinking-it's-not-tired-ulant (debatable). Along with that, caffeine apparently has a half-life of twelve hours, which I found interesting when I'd wake up regularly at 3am and lay there for an hour an a half trying to solve life's most obscure mysteries. So I did the unthinkable and quit coffee (caffeine). Within a few days the palpitations stopped and I started sleeping... noticeably better! Now (sadly) I drink a single half-caff coffee like a grandpa. And as much as it pains me not to get my full fix of that sweet sweet coffee cherry nectar (was it placebo all along??), real deal sleep is totally worth it. I know you quit coffee for three months and started seeing positive results, but I'm wondering if less caffeine for a longer period of time would help your sleep better. Or maybe you're just broken like me. Please keep the quality content coming. You are the American Sir David Attenborough of sarcasm and wit. Roll the credits.

Have had terrible sleep my whole life. Always the last kid at the sleepover to fall asleep. Have had people telling me I need to improve my sleep hygiene/turn off blue lights/restrict my caffeine/take sleeping pills etc. etc. etc. as long as I can remember. Turns out, none of that was ever going to help, because the REASON I've always slept badly is because I had undiagnosed ADHD with delayed sleep phase syndrome. I'm not built for bedtime. My circadian rhythm is just kinda busted. Without life stuff forcing me to do otherwise, I will just slip into a 5am - 1pm sleep cycle. WITH life stuff, I will fall into a 5am to 10am nap cycle, with a half hour nap before dinner, and feel vaguely crappy the whole day. I can be in bed by 10pm every night, and I, without fail, will stay awake for HOURS, staring at the ceiling, hating every minute. It just absolutely shits me that the world won't just let me be a damn vampire and sleep when I'm tired!

...and NOW I have anxiety in addition to my poor sleeping/apnea...averaging 5 - 1/2 hours per night for the last 25 years. But alas, next year I do retire...at which time I shall sleep whenever, and for however long I wish. Riiiiiight!

haha YES, I always wished they put napping rooms in offices. I would be SO much more productive in the afternoon, if they let me sleep for just 20 minutes after lunch. My wife always complains about her bad sleep, but then she falls asleep within 3 seconds every night LITERALLY!!

I love naps. My Fitbit says I sleep great, but I often need a nap anyway. Sometimes I go back to sleep for a few minutes after going to the gym in the morning. 😅

For a whole week I was getting back into my sleep cycle. Stayed up all day, even though the brain refused to function a bit at first. Day 5 I felt ok. Day 6 I broke down and had an hour nap. That night I stayed up until 4am and had only 3 hours of sleep. Now to start it all over again..

I love naps. I have about 4 per week. Likely after lunch. All very natural. I feel my whole body calm down and feel so refreshed after. Most of my high flying friends think I'm lazy. I know it's my secret super power. The self love and acceptance to give my body and mind the rest it needs to live in this crazy modern world ❤❤

I was just trying to get my daughter to nap. She is usually an expert napper, but she just wanted to eat and eat and eat. Gave her some higher calorie food to see if that would do the trick, but she just threw it up on me. She's with her Granny now so I can shower and stuff.

I also *had* a hard time falling asleep but I discovered an amazing trick (it works for me at least). So, I imagine myself in a situation that aids my brain into a dream. If you're so inclined .... imagining a situation of a 'dirty nature' might work but it doesn't even have to be that. I've just learned that imagining a home my wife and i saw once in an open house that I loved with a random maid (again, it's not dirty per se) or someone cooking. It's enough to get my brain thinking "who is the person ... what might she represent ... what might she say/do". It is the single best tool to aid in my sleep, even more than the tart cherry juice or the sleep gummies (which are both pretty awesome when I need them)

Sometimes naps are wonderful for me, but mostly they don't do me a lot of good. The 20 minute nap is the most successful for me but it makes me hate everyone and everything when that alarm goes off.

I'm a big fan of napping. I work grave shift, so getting enough sleep during the day is impossible. There's always stuff going on outside. Summertime is the worst for this. But, I can always take a little nap in the evening if I need to top off my tank. Instead of a box fan though, I use a white noise machine. It makes rain sounds. A little disjointed when there's birds chirping and lawnmowers going outside, but eh. It works.

I am unfortunately a non-napper, but I don't begrudge anyone a good nap. Most of us would be better off with more sleep! Also, the editing on this made me laugh out loud on multiple occasions. The General Consensus and Gory details but was gold.

I nap because my husband snores and the sleep apnea is so loud between 3 and 4 am. Wish I could sleep 💤. Sometimes I feel horrible afterwards often I feel like I needed it. I never slept when our child was young. Now we are in a lower key area and it is a little easier. Soon we’ll be in the country and hoping for better sleep. Our daughter said red light helps. I can fall asleep for 4 to 5 hours. Then I’m up for the day,……until nap time.

as a firefighter/paramedic, napping is absolutely essential. whenever i see people talking about sleep hygiene or how "uninterrupted 8 hours of sleep" is essential to good health or whatever, i have to laugh at their idealism. some people don't have the luxury to nap, but some of us don't have the luxury to sleep. also i usually sleep for an hour to an hour+half and yeah i'm usually a little groggy right after but then i'm *so much better* and it never ruins my night because i do it smack in the middle of the day. easy peasy. naps are wonderful. nap on. nap until your naps come true.

One person’s cure for difficulty sleeping was sleeping in a different room to their partner. It wasn’t planned - there was something happening with their partner I forget what, but he slept so deeply and well that he had to figure out how to explain ‘it’s not you, it’s me’ but for bedtime.

I’m 44 and have the strong urge to retire AND to nap. I’m hoping to retire before I’m 55 and to nap before I have to go out for this dinner thing this evening and sadly I think only one of those hopes will be realized and it’s not the latter.
