When it comes to videos that have become ingrained in the retro gaming world, at the top of the list is game room tours. People enjoy seeing other collections, but why? I dig into some of the reasons people enjoy game room tours, as well as some of the things we're looking to get out of them while watching.

I agree! Also I like smaller collections because they represent yourself better than the bigger ones and you tend to appreciate every game in your collection more if your collection is smaller.

What I dislike about game room tours: they too often feel like wealth flexing that's tacky at best. What I like about game room tours: they often tickle the parts of my brain that deeply appreciate good interior design/aesthetics; they often serve as an interesting peek into the mind of their respective owner. Most noteworthy thing I've seen in a game room tour video: someone had REALLY FREAKING COOL, gigantic, Super Famicom replica carts AS THE STAIRS LEADING DOWN INTO THEIR FANCY RICH PERSON GAME ROOM/DUNGEON. SO NEAT!! I'm sure they weren't cheap to design and build, but they looked soooo cool!!

I like game room tours to get ideas of how to display my own stuff. I’m guessing RB doesn’t want to show the whole game room because one corner of the room is just a giant pile of banana peels 🍌

For me, personally; the reason I enjoy seeing game room collections; is because growing up, literally no one had anything like it. So, to see such a thing as adult; is just somewhere in the realm of the fantastical.

Well I mean, people want to see other game collections because I mean... games just look so cool when put together in such an awesome room. Plus it helps people know what games they're missing if they're planning to collect every game on the systems they own.

Analogue produced them for a number of years and stopped in 2015 I think? I remember being tempted for the longest time back then and finally decided to save up and then order one. They stopped making them shortly after, so I got in there just in time. I have a feeling they'll revisit the Neo Geo with a FPGA version of it at some point.

Game Room tours are awesome. I watch them a lot for the stories and and see how diverse or eclectic they can be. Also sometimes the accoutrements are also awesome too. Whatever toys, signage, arcade sticks, 3D printed stands, pictures, artwork and so on. Sometimes the people with full collections can have daunting and unfortunate videos because they aren't well set up and not look as pretty. If people set it up in a bad way, it just comes off as hoarding. But when it's done well it just looks magical. Conversation over games is always fun!

Part of the appeal of any sort of collection tour, in my opinion, is the virtual window shopping aspect. Seeing what the person has and going, "I'd like to try that game", "oh, I haven't heard of that one", "yea, that's a nice one" is rather enjoying.

I like game room tours. One reason is of course to see how other people organize their game rooms so that I can get ideas for storing my collection, another reason is because I don't have a dedicated game room so it's fun to imagine what having a dedicated room in my house for it would be like. Over here in Japan space is kind of a premium so I instead have a game closet. I worked really hard to plan and set everything up in a way that I could maximize my space while also ensuring that everything was stored in a way that was optimal, easy to access and would protect labels etc. Maybe I should do a game closet tour 😅

That is why I watch KZfaq Videos to find out more about games that appeal to me & not so much about other peoples collection. Take this video by RB. I like game room tours because they give me ideas to things to buy to improve mine. Not games, but stands, organizers, methods for having a functional gaming setup.... things like that. I saw once a video where someone made a retro-cart , where he put a small crt and matching consoles ( Genesis and SNES ) on, ready to play! Useless to say, I fully replicated it ( with Genesis, Snes and PS1, ready for some light gun games too! ) , and I'm playing these games even more, given the cart can be stored away and pulled out at convenience. It's amazing for small spaces where you need to put aside old stuff to makes space for new stuff. Now I'm just waiting for my dust covers from PrinterBoy to arrive :D

I think the point of having pride in your collection is how you display it. You don’t need to show it to everyone, but if you have a ton of games you should take care of them, and if you collect them you typically want them easy to access so you can play them. I’d like to house my collection in a extra closet or inside a large credenza or other piece of furniture that I could enclose. However right now I have them all on a shelf, stacked.

I'm always fascinated with the obscure or homemade ideas. I don't need to see another white IKEA shelf filled with N64 games. Give me a crochet Bob-omb sitting on an Action Max any day of the week. I recently saw a gameroom with Amiibo on plastic makeup stands and now I'm looking for tier stands for my Disney Infinity figures and some calculator stands to potentially display some consoles at an angle.

I feel that in some cases since retro games are worth quite a bit of money now its sort of like "bling" for nerds (myself included) in the sense people don't see games just dollar signs 🤑 This is obviously not the only reason actually when I first visit a friends house the first thing I do is take a gander at their games,CDs, and videos just to see what kind of stuff they are into and it usually strikes up a good conversation and the same kind of thing happens in the comment section here on KZfaq because.... I mean... Its fun! "Bruh Max Payne 2 was goated 😲"

So many comments now so no idea what everybody has commented. But I feel that we all got a dream of having a game room similar to a video game store. Most of us will never get such room of our own but it's still a dream. The reason why most of us will never have that big gaming room with so many games and consoles and related stuff is that we live kind of small, maybe an apartment with too few rooms. So that means that our video games and consoles will share the space with books, DVDs and much more in the living room. Maybe we can have an entire shelf or two with only video games but not an entire room so full that we wish we have an even bigger room or additional rooms to fit even more games. So NEXT thing about these game room... are these people still collectors or turned into hoarders? When you have a snaller collection the chance that you really LOVE each game is so much bigger. When you have that giant game room and thousands of games, do you really really LOVE each game crazy much? I believe that it's about the satisfaction of having "complete collections" and it hurts to miss some games so you really want to add also that "black sheep" (the unwnated game) just to make the collection complete. A good example of this is Zelda collectors that also wanna collect the CD-i Zelda games. So that's my thought's about "what's the deal with game rooms". Personally I just buy games that I feel that I wanna play and seems like fun to play. I've also bought one extra copy for a very very few games because I hope for an increasing value by time. For example I bought 2 copies of Super Mario 3D All Stars, because that game got taken down, as promised, from eShop so I feel that this complilation might have a good value in the future so one copy to play and one sealed copy (bought on sale) as either backup or investment. I got all my games right now in storage boxes. It's around 30 games for Switch, 25 for 3DS and 20-25 for Wii. Plus the Mini consoles. It's not a huge collection. But I'm happy with it and proud! I also got a few Game & Watch that stands out. So that old Super Mario for Game & Watch, and I don't talk about the 35th anniversary Game & Watch. When I see these videos about the "biggest game rooms" I often feel that I don't like it. Because it gives me such hoarding vibes no matter how organized it is. I prefer the smaller collections with more personal and cozy vibes! Quality over quantity in other words. And the good thing about these smaller collections: you can actually PLAY these games, not just some games but ALL games. I remember a game "room" tour with a very unique focus: I think it was only the Harvest Moon games. All games from that series. And that's all his games! 5-10 games or more than 10? Can't remember. There's this kind of collectors as well. I respect all game collections. But when I get these "hoarding vibes" it feels so sad. My latest addition is Mega Man Wily Wars (for Genesis) that is the physical re-release. Just got it a few days ago after 6 months of waiting. I don't have a Genesis but I have Genesis Mini with the "digital" copy, so this physical re-release gives me the manual and much more! And I'm a big Mega Man fan and that's why I bought Genesis Mini so I can play the Genesis versions of Mega Man 1-3. My own game collection is strictly for myself but if someone like my collection that would be a nice bonus :)

Cool vid and sick dance moves man. I like game room tours mainly to see how other games have set up their spaces in terms of game storage, console setups, and other interesting extra items like those neon signs you have. Seeing what games that may be in the collection is cool too, plus extra cool points if there's lots of Sega stuff. I know it doesn't really matter, but watching the game room tours also makes me wonder how my collection stacks up? All that said, it's just fun. Thanks for another great video! I personally like game room tours, but only when the gamer doesn't have like 3000 games, because they end up making an hour long video where half the games are modern games. I don't judge games by how old they are, but in my experience about 95% of modern games are, to me, much less enjoyable than most 80s and 90s games. Now, I want to build an almost complete collection for a console, where I'm only missing one or two very common games. "No, I have every N64 game but Super Mario 64. There's just no way I can justify spending $1.5 million on a first party Nintendo game. An Atlus game? Maybe, but not Nintendo."

My personal collection pieces i love the most are things that left me with something afterwards other than another piece of plastic to add to the shelf to "complete" it. Like my grey Gameboy Advanced SP I played since we had one DS and I am the little brother. I accidentally left it in the window sill of my family's mini van where it was then half melted. It still works and i am never getting rid of it.

The thing that jumped out to me the most in a game room tour was this small shelf mounted to the wall that held gameboy games showing the front of their cartridge while they were leaned to the wall. It had a big gameboy logo decal on it!

Dude you are hilarious. I in fact like gameroom tours. Maybe it’s because my gameroom sucks and most of my collection is stuffed into 3 closets of my house because I’m overwhelmed and don’t know where to start? Or maybe I like the tours because I like the retro console hardware? I just like watching other people share their gamerooms so I can hear how they accumulated thousands of games at some mysterious garage sale with mint stuff at pennies on the dollar - making the collector look smart and savvy. I’m waiting for the video where the tour guide is honest about how much they hVe overspent to get that amazing collection while their wife and kids go hungry and the repo man is trying to claim the car on their driveway.

I love game room tours! More because of the devices and the accessories than the games they have.. I discovered a lot of weird accessories that exist in gaming thanks to room tours.. Something like the dreamcast keyboard or the SNES mouse I enjoy them a lot!

Game room tours always make me a bit jealous. I mainly collect consoles, I have just about all of them. Even the obscure stuff, like the Panasonic Q and Neo Geo CDZ. But I really need to start building up my game library.

For me it's inspiration, and tidbits about games that is of personal interest. Also odd stuff. What i don't care is videogame collector's that is focus on plushies and game-relared memorabilia. I like hardware and software.

I've had people in my game room, which has over 300 games displayed and they think "is that all" well, the other 300+ are in plastic bins in my side pantry-type-closet thing in my PC center built in. I mean too many shelves and such just means more games to dust. Loose carts are fine in the cabinet.

I like the room tours to get ideas for my game room, I'm kinda done with buying more retro games. Collecting was fun when you scored games cheap at flea markets or blind bulk boxes from eBay. Now it's cost prohibited so now I just want ideas to setup my room

When it comes to my soon-to-be large collection, I don’t have any plans to display it. Simply owning a library of games is enough for me! (Edit: Of course I’ll store the games in a place where they won’t be damaged lol)

After years of the complete Console Collections, I've really grown more found of smaller collection. If you have every SNES and PS1 game, that's cool, but if you have 40 games total, but can go on a 40 minute talk about Dragon Quest 7, that's interesting, I want to see that.

I will be your exorcist and add the 667th like. The things that entertain me the most are the stunts. Scott the Woz repeatedly chucking game after game into his toilet water or taking a bath with them is always fun. A little surprised that Crash Bandicoot, Crash Team Racing, Jak & Daxter, and perhaps Banjo Tooie are missing from your collection.
