Why do people play sims in general?.. farming sim, truck sim,... To expierence a life they otherwise yould not live.. as you said. Maybe they took a different careerpath or just incapable/not have enough of starting a farm or flying a plane.. :) .. i coiud never afford a pilots license because of bills i have ro pay and family and stuff xD.. but with fs i can experience this .. without the mostly lethal consequences of crashing.. love your vids.. could you ti a series in msfs2020 of how to start up various planes in the game? I can fly the icon A5 .. its basically a sky car xD but struggle with other types .. xD .. keep it on

50 years ago I took flying lessons. I got my private pilot license but as time went on, other things became more important and I quit flying. I ran across Flight Simulator and wondered how much I remembered. Fired up a Cessna 172, did a few touch and goes and felt very, very good about myself. It's great fun and a very positive experience. Also, much much cheaper than the real thing! :)

Yeah... I only met one friend in my entire simming life that is also a flight simmer, it's really hard to talk about with other people, they sometimes asked me what was the point haha. Specially my parents, they preferred me to go outside and play, and told me fight simming was just a game and never was going to teach me something. Now in flight school, and all that knowledge really pays off. That's why YT and channels like yours are a great place to learn and share this passion.

Yeah, my dad has asked me many times "what's the point of flight simming"? But on the other hand, he is not interested AT ALL in aviation. For him aeroplanes (and trains, boats etc) are just one method of travelling... So I kinda understand why he doesn't 'get' simulators. But it was annoying when he initially thought flight sim is just a game and couldn't believe we're flying with real aviation charts (he thought the charts are not available to the public due safety reasons).

When I was a young lad I dreamed of being an airline pilot. Like you mentioned for many reasons my life went down a different path. One that did, however, afford me the opportunity to fly across the country quite a bit. Mostly in large airliners but also in small company planes where I was able to sit in the co-pilot seat on occasion. All of the controls just looked so cool yet so complicated. So a big part of the experience for me is understanding how it all really works. Being able to look at a complex cockpit and actually know what all of the switches and gauges actually do. I spend a lot of time learning all that in great detail and setting up my rig to replicate the real world as closely as possible. The learning is the biggest part for me. And now that I am recently retired it has turned into an amazing hobby. I have established goals to work toward too. Like learning to use VATSIM, creating KZfaq videos to share with friends, working my way up to flying larger jets, etc. All just part of the experience for me. Yes I have a life outside of practicing with my simulator, but enjoy every moment I spend on it and make zero excuses for the time I spend. I love every minute of it. From the thrill I feel doing it all correctly to the anxiety I feel when things go wrong - and they do. Great video man....you did the flight simulator world a service. Keep up the good work man. Cheers!!

Reasons #1 and #3 apply to me. I love aviation, but it's not a poor mans hobby. I'm not poor, but it's still far more expensive to get your PPL than I can afford since I retired. Flight simming is a great way to at least semi-accurately operate a simulated aircraft and learn how to do things in a realistic manner. I love learning all I can about flying GA aircraft, route planning and trying to emulate what I've learned in the sim. It's not everyone's cup of tea, but for me it's a great hobby; especially when combined with Vatsim.

I would also add that the developments over the years has seen some amazing changes to become something quite realistic. I remember the first types of simulators in computers like the Sinclair ZX spectrum where there was basically a few lines for horizon, a long rectangle for an airstrip and a cross for an aeroplane, now we have some beautiful scenery and amazing addons like you say in your video :) Its a tremendous hobby that many do understand as over the years you can see the numbers in Flightsim shows, and subscribers to KZfaq accounts and Twitch. My wife doesnt fully understand and was semi embarrassed to tell work colleagues what my main hobby was and the reply was 'Hey my Dad does that too and another said my sister uses it as homework for real life studies to become a pilot. At the end of the day the true hammer blow to disbelievers is the fact that real life pilots use it too and enjoy being part of the development of simulators and addons for Aircraft. Great video again and happy flying!

I fly 737's for a major U.S. carrier and did 10 years's in the USAF flying F16's. While there are many individuals who use MFS or X-plane as a "game". It has been my experience that a significant number of "simmers" do so for the reasons you cited. Most at some point in their life admitted aspiring to flying for the military or the airlines and/or they have found financing training in the civilian sector prohibitive. If one has a muscular pc or desktop there can be a degree of immersion that is fairly sophisticated. I'm not on board with the assumption that even the most sophisticated payware aircraft or freebie--such as the Zibo Mod 737 (which I'm using with my son to introduce him to CRM--allows you to learn about aircraft systems (or flight dynamics) at anything beyond a rudimentary level. To cite one example, even a highly skilled military pilot that has never flown heavies can need six months of line flying before he (or she) begins to nail descents in a 737-800. It's surprisingly challenging to stay on profile and simmers will generally just attempt to let LNAV or VNAV do the job which results in finding yourself too high, too fast, or too close during the approach . I could write a book on the demands of real world flying vis a vis simming. Consider the very important element of "Flex Temperature" which impacts critical aspects of takeoff. There have been real-world accidents when this number has been inaccurately calculated and at least insofar as the Zibo mod goes, most simmers ignore it for a simple reason: they can't get the charts or software from Bowing to calculate it. Then too, enter your flight plan from the OFP into the FMS and you just sit back and wait until you hit the TOD to get back to work. In the real world, you might plan for a particular STAR and runway only to have ATC say, "Not so fast. You're going to be vectored for 31 (At KLGA)." So much for your pre descent planning, All that being said, both X-Plane and Microsoft, even if seen by the uninformed as simple games, can, as you said, translate some degree of skill to real world flying. The problem is that you can fairly easily identify pilots who begin taking flying lessons because they spend a lot of time looking at the gauges rather than out the window. Any simmer who has a career goal of flying should be particularly careful about the habits that can be formed, forget about the buzz from greasing one on in Paris or LAS Vegas, and combine his sim time with any one of the many excellent online programs that take you through your first flight through solo, etc. and learn to do things in a very disciplined manner--unless, of course, your end-game is just to get some warm fuzzies taking a Microsoft 767 from JFK to LAX.
@AviationPro
@AviationPro 5 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your comment! That's definitely true, however I do want to point out there are really different levels of 'deepness' when it comes to flight simming. From a personal perspective, I always create flight plans, including calculations for takeoff and thrust reduction with weight and appropriate trim settings etc. Those calculators do actually exists, albeit probably not as accurate as the stuff used in the real world. Then again, some people just like to takeoff and take an airliner from A to B without all that stuff. It really depends on what you want to simulate. For me, the multitasking skills that you develop by interacting with ATC while operating the jet through different modes of automation and hand flying (I try to handfly whenever I can) are important. Throw in the occassional VOR/DME, NDB or visual approach and you learn more about 'flying' the aircraft rather than just relying on VNAV and LNAV. That being said, yes, it is dangerous to form habits. On my first flying lesson years ago, I also looked at the instruments, but the instructor put the map in front of them so I had to look outside. A lesson quickly learned. It's something that I'm also considering for future flight training (I'm now in the selection process for that). I don't fly too many flightsim flights and I will probably not be flying a lot of flightsim during potential flight training, just to start from an as neutral position as possible. Yet I do believe the flightsim experience has developed certain multitasking skills that can be very useful. We all form habits that may later turn out to be wrong, but if you have the motivation and are strong enough to change them in light of a career as a real world pilot, I think it will be less hard to change them.

I love planes. Currently playing DCS world, having a good time learning the Hornet and all its complicated systems, and just enjoying the sensation of flight. Feels so good when all the pieces of the puzzle come together after all the time out into learning the systems.

I use my SIM for pre flighting a new course and approach prior to getting into my real plane. I load up Ortho4XP scenery and it really helps with being familiar with the new terrain. Also, when the weather is crummy and I need a flight fix, I fly the SIM in nice weather and then I feel like I have had a great day....OH FORGET TO SAY,, I FLY MY SIM IN VR MODE ONLY!

When I was a young kid I wanted to become a pilot, but unfortunately life got in the way as it always does. I’m still young, will become 20 soon, but getting a PPL or CPL is impossible for me because of medical issues. Fortunately, I can still experience the dream I had as a kid in a simulator. My love for aviation persisted over the years, and flying around in a virtual plane is great. Personally, I also love the fact that I DON’T have to be staring at my screen all of the time like in other games, I can just do some chores or whatever while I’m flying. It’s the perfect game really ;-).

I've been using X-plane 11 for around a year now, and quite enjoy flying the Zibo-Mod 737-800, the ASK-21 glider (very relaxing!), and occasionally GA planes. I feel as if I have learned quite a lot regarding procedures, systems, aerodynamics and even geography. I initially started off using GeoFS (a flight simulator on top of Google Earth). This free online sim, while very unrealistic and limited, is something I would have loved to have around 20 years ago when I was in high school. A chance to learn geography and a bit of physics, all while playing. As always, thanks for the cool videos!

But in my age its little harder to learn new simulators, but training very often on Cessna Skyhawk , will try to learn more on the B-737 Zibo mod in the future. Keep up the good work Evert !! My reason for flying a flight sim is that after flying for 20 years (from mid-60s to mid 80's) not only in the midwestern and western states, but also Mexico, Latin and South America, I wanted to simulate flying into every airport that I flew into in those days. I started with a C-172, but since I like to fly in real time, I quickly moved up to faster aircraft, trying to stay with planes I am rated in, but I do jump up to an F-18 if I am covering the real long distances. What a blast!! Also, I was able to get my grandkids interested in flying, and they sit at the sim nearly every time they come over. Amazing how much and how quickly they have learned some of the basics.

Learning how to do a full approach procedure, in bad weather, is a lot of fun and even, believe it or not, exciting. And learning to be a controller is fascinating as well. Controlling a busy airspace is quite intense too. I have a relative who is a real-world Atlanta Center controller, and he was very impressed by VATSIM. While there are definitely some concessions made to the PC-environment and the small number of controllers, he was very impressed with how realistic overall it was and the job the controllers did.

When i started this hobby in 2010 thanks to my friend, i fell quickly in love because there was a lot to learn, but the progress was fast. And especially with regular GA flying with proper controllers, you do not get that feeling i got with car sims, that i am missing so much due to not feeling the car. This is also true with HC ww2 plane models in landing and take off etc ...

My best use of FlightSiming is in meticulously crafted add-on aircraft practicing real-world standard and emergency cockpit procedures. It is particularly useful for IFR and radio navigation practice. That aside, there is something very satisfying about single-pilot landing a two-pilot-rated Learjet 45 at KSFO in an 18kt crosswind after a slam dunk traffic-avoidance final approach, squeezed between two heavies ... AND not missing a single real-world procedure ... even in the highest realism settings.

As one of those “nerds” I relate, I have such a strong love for the mechanical world that I want to be surrounded by it even when I can’t. It’s why I have a few simulators ranging from No Limits 2 to Train Simulator to XP11. I’m passionate about all of these. Each of those three have different places in my heart (albeit they are all connected as well). But seeing people say stuff about social life is something we all just gotta get over. Sure I might not go out as much as others (also due to my degree requiring so much time), but the connections I’ve made through these games and real life objects mean so much more. Plus we’re having fun doing what we’re doing so who cares what other people think!

In my younger years I always thought about becoming an airline pilot, but with math not being one of my favorite subjects, and being away from my home very often, since I wanted pets for companions, Flight Simulator was a great game for me. I also liked the fact that you could alter the game to your preferences, so instead of doing everything to start the plane and create flight plans, etc., I could just get in my favorite plane and fly it by hand to wherever I wanted to go. I have just downloaded FS2020 and I have been away from FS for several years, so it is going to take time to get back into it, and learn this new program.

I think you can! Taking the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro as an example, you would probably have to assign the throttle axis to some of the buttons on top of the joystick and use your thumb to control it. Unless you're very fast with your thumb and you can control the actual throttle axis.

Flight Simulators like fsx got me into real world flying, and kept up my passion of flying since I was 10 years old. Honestly in practicality stuff like fsx, P3D, and even X-Plane is only really good for instrument training, or getting used to a really specific aircraft(airplane cockpits are pretty unique to a specific aircraft outside of the airlines, and there are things that are and aren’t working all the time), but don’t let that discourage you from using them. I will say it impressed a cfi I was going with when I hopped in a sim they had for a ga aircraft and I was able to start it up in just a few seconds without him saying a word because the general systems were similar to a payware product I had in fsx. It also provides a great accessible introduction to flying and all the little aspects of it without having a family member in the industry or a nice enough friend to take you up in their airplane. I still sim quite a bit, and I have pilot friends who still do. It’s quite a lot of fun, even if the flight characteristics really aren’t real life.
