I know this is an older video, but I would love to see this being looked at again. I have been struggling with a two way miss on my driver. Just too much activity in my hands. I have started to set up with a a fade stance and 7/10 goes straight and the others baby fade with low spin and a lot more carry than a straight set up. Love this idea

I think they typically go with whatever their swing pattern dictates. Because of D plane, you will be fade bias when you hit up on the ball. Combine that with rotation leaving the face open longer and pointing the path more to the left (for a right hander) and you get a fade pattern.

With the adjustable hosels NOT truly changing the true static loft of a head (but simply opening or closing the face down)........I would guess you would get more consistent results if you simply cherry picked a head with the desired specs as opposed to getting overly wrench happy? So if you wanted 9 degrees slightly open wouldn't it be better to find head that was measured 9 to 9.5 and maybe 1-1.5 open FA. As compared to getting a 10.5 head and turning it down a degree which would ONLY open the FA assuming you will square and de loft at address? I know from my personal experience that I had more success with tour heads or measured spec heads and keeping it all STANDARD. Anytime I messed around with the wrench it was never as good distance or flight. But that is just me....
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
Hi Brent, sure thats the advantage tour players have. However adjustable hosels work great too.

Another gem video! Now it makes sense :D Funny enough, the most fairways hit I played, was hitting fades all day, but the drawer in me fights it! hahaha
@scotty_teee42266 жыл бұрын
I have messed around playing draws and fades. I can get a little extra out of a draw, no doubt, but i haven't stuck with enough to have the consistency, i can over draw it or push it. I'm currently a fairly straight flight or a slight tail of fade and i seem to be more consistent that way. The slight distance gain and shape of a draw still seem to seduce me though haha. It's funny how a draw is perceived as the better flight. I can understand how a high spinny banana slice is a bad thing but there is so much want for people to hit big draws, which can also have as many problems

Alignment is the only way I can change shots with any kind of control but I primarily play the fade for all shots. And I also have tested a fade vs draw on distance and the amount of yards I gain on a draw is at best 5 yards with my 250 carry driver distance.
@johnnypenso95746 жыл бұрын
I am just starting to experiment with trying to hit a draw off the tee. Went to GolfTown today to try out a driver and found that I gained about 15 yards with the low draw when I hit it flush vs. a fade shot. That's on the monitor of course, we'll have to see next month if it holds up on course.
@EDTHEWATERGUY6 жыл бұрын
That 15 yards is mostly roll out which will vary on different courses. That is why we mainly use the carry distance not the total distance. I doubt your carry distances would vary that much unless you are driving the ball around 300 yards carry. What is the farthest you can CARRY a fade vs a draw (flushed shots)?
@hamchillyvlog60345 жыл бұрын
I saw the video that Bubba Waston explains why he prefer hitting fade, the fade(not the slice) the ball go less off the line even you over faded it(ball goes higher). But the draw may go further off the line because it will go lower and roll even more.
@OpaKnows6 жыл бұрын

I'm fairly erratic with my driver. I swing 2-3 degrees in to out, naturally my good shots are draws and my misses are hooks and push slices. I've tried the fade on the range to see if it can tighten my dispersion. The results are horrendous. When trying to leave my face slightly open to path, I massively overdo it and hit awful, weak, high push-slices with crazy spin and no speed. I've tried hard to scale it back from there, but it's difficult. I just can't find subtlety with an open face-to-path. I like the advice you gave here- I will try aiming left and hitting target through instinct, rather than conscious efforts of clubface manipulation.
@jdshilling5 жыл бұрын
I feel I am in the same boat as you. To hit the fade you have to have the face open to the path, which means that 2-3 degrees in to out path is a wide open face resulting in high push fades. For me, I have been working on hitting the back of the ball, being more straight down the line with the path. This is not so much to hit the fade but as to hit more up on the ball and not get the giant hooks. I like the idea of hitting hard and not worrying about the dreaded snapper. If I have to go to a fade, well, then so be it. Any distance I was gaining by a draw has been lost with the low spinning driver and balls that I am now playing. When I can do it, I gain a lot of yards. 220 with my normal shot, and 250 with this less into out and more straight and up - it looks better too.

Mango Man have you looked at your posture? Do you sway back and forward or bob up and down? Do you have a PGA pro who looks at how you’re swinging it from time to time?
@headbanger19926 жыл бұрын
It’s a high percentage and easier shot to hit with a driver hence it's a good option, and these guys hit it so long that a few yards less but in the short grass is good.
@whatwouldiknow17595 жыл бұрын
Very true! Better to hit 20 yards shorter and on the short stuff than in the trees.
@guenthersteiner33115 жыл бұрын
A draw is better - more speed so when you hit the trees the ball bounces off them back onto the fairway. With fades not as much speed, hits trees and drops at the bottom of the tree.
@philip49416 жыл бұрын
Nice video it's funny as I bet most amateur golfers think (myself included) the draw is a 'sexier' shot and then struggle to get it rather then be happy with a consistent/accurate swing. Oh one question. I saw your video from the PGA show but have you been testing the new chrome softs? I am around a 103-110 mph club head speed with driver and have always played the standard soft. However, I read somewhere that >105 you should be playing the soft x - I just can't get it in my head I should be playing the tour speed ball though. Do you know if there is a big difference in ball speed, distance and spin between the two balls at higher speeds (more so with irons and wedges) ? Or is this something I will just need to test myself and see.
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
Good question Philip! We did some ball testing with wedges but haven't gotten to the driver yet. It is on our to-do list for sure though. Stay tuned!
@jimmyp60496 жыл бұрын
No mention of the out to in swing? Is that his typical swing? Definitely crushing hit !
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
The out to in reading on the GC Quad was mostly from alignment, so I was actually aiming a bit down the right side to allow for the bit of fade back to center. Generally my swing has an in to out path.
@Wesquire3 жыл бұрын
D plane means that with a neutral swing, short irons will have a draw bias and driver will have a fade bias (when you have a + angle of attack). End of story. You'd have to have a very draw biased swing to hit draws with driver, and this is something Rory himself identified as a reason his wedges have less than ideal distance control.
@per_growth5 жыл бұрын
I don't know what my ball flight for the driver is called - but I usually aim left edge of the fairway and the ball direction starts off around 10-15 yards to the right and should be on the center of the fairway. My misses tend to be when the ball flies straight where I aim (which ends up in the rough). I think I usually just push it? I average around 265 off the tee and find around 10 out of 14 fairways each round.

@kapickleball6 жыл бұрын
Ian and Matt, I love the content you guys are putting out but this particular video I have done issues with. To begin with, I believe that most tour players hit a power fade with a slightly out to in swing path and a closed club face with the face to path slightly open not as you describe in this video.

Somewhat of a noob question... At my golf course there are about 3 holes where a hooking tee shot would be huge. There are trees down the left hand side, then a dog leg to the left. Trying a power fade over the trees seems risky. However, trying to hook is also risky because it might snap hook too early and go into the trees. What would a typical professional do in this spot, or what might you suggest? I have, at times, been able to successfully hook around the trees and set myself up for birdie but it is in inconsistent.

The way I see it you haven't answered the question. You only explained how hitting a fade doesn't hurt as much as it used to back in the days. I'd still be interested in know why to play the fade? You seemed to touch on it a little by saying a missed draw usually turns into a big hook, and a missed fade is much less damaging. Then why people even play draws at all as stock shots?
@butette6 жыл бұрын
Great video again, but you pretty much still shows that the fade (even power low spin fad) is quite a bit shorter than the draw that Matt hits in the other video. I wonder if it is the same for the Tour players as far as distance loss of power fade vs power draw?
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
The draw will most likely produce the longest drives but can also yield the shortest drive if you spin it too low.
@RobertsonDMcI3 жыл бұрын
What puzzles me about the fade is how do you compensate the basic loft of the face? My driver is at already 10.5 degrees and when I adjust for the fade 2-3 degrees surely my club is now weaker resulting in much less distance --- is this simply the result I must accept, or is there another factor to be applied?
@kbkesq3 жыл бұрын
I know this is a fitting channel but notice 2 things: 1. Matt used to set his wrists at the top and had a faster, looser swing with perhaps less control 2. He hit drives with a driver just as far as now with 4yr old technology. Most guys are spending way too much on new stuff. They could get fitted with 2-4yo equipment and buy it off eBay.

Hard to say Chad, the name of the game is a consistent shot shape that you can count on. If that happens to be a draw rather than a fade for you then go with that 100%. Unless you are playing a massive curve on your tee shots, it's unlikely to hold you back on too many holes.

Heavier weights and low spin shafts. Also working on keeping your hands in front and turning through without flipping the hands. Still difficult though, as my fade is generally about a club shorter than my draw in carry and at least that much if not more in total.

Sorry I don't understand, you say no one wants to hit a hook, surely a hook comes from a bad draw shot but conversely no one wants to hit a slice which comes from a bad fade shot. So my question is, why do you say a fade is more controllable then a draw? Both bad shots are devastating to your game. Thankfully I don't slice the ball anymore but when I did, it wasn't pretty and I couldn't score well from it. Surely a bad fade shot, that turns into a slice, is equally has bad as a hook? Also when you look at the dispersion figures on shot 2 & 3, there is basically 70, yards or feet? difference between them. If it's feet it's not too bad but if it's yard that's a long way. Looking forward to your response.

I'm certainly no pro, but what I noticed when I finally learned how to turn over club face was it became a lot more likely to over-rotate and hook it than leave the face open. Now if I try to hit a fade, their's almost no way I can actually leave the club open enough to slice - it's just that unnatural. I wonder if it's the same for most people after they learn to turn the club over in the downswing..
@damianwatson54436 жыл бұрын
Ok that's interesting. It'll be interesting to see if the boys from txg reply and whether they say the same. Thank you.
@clubchampionmedia6 жыл бұрын
The video was more in reference to PGA Tour players Damian. Tour players will almost never slice the ball, blocks and hooks are more likely. Fades are more controllable because the ball spins a little more on a fade. More spin makes it harder to curve the ball.
@damianwatson54436 жыл бұрын
Thanks for your reply. What would you say then, the average amateur golfer should do, shot shape wise? Try a power fade or draw? Many thanks
