Why do preamps make popping noises?

We all know the routine of amp on last and reverse the procedure on shutdown. But why? What makes the preamp and other equipment make nasty and possibly damaging noises in our systems? Have a question you want to ask Paul? www.psaudio.com/ask-paul/

One hack I know of is to place a capacitor across the 'on/off' switch or relay contacts to drown out inductive spikes when shutting off. I know I'm dating myself here - I remember when there were actually on/off SWITCHES! :)

The Dynaco PAT-5 preamp has a solution to this. The preamp was powered on all the time! The power switch was only used to switch the power amp!

Hey Paul, I have a lasting popping sound when I turn on my AMP. I have a multiroom system connected to a AMP Selector (4 zones), and when I turn it on all the Speaker Connected do a popping sound for a few minutes (around 3 to 5 minutes). It is not too loud, but it is annoying! It seems like the speaker are kind of warming up, does that make any sense? Is there a way to fix it? Cheers from Brazil, thanks for the attention!

Hi, thanks for info. I understand the that bang on turn on but i have problem on turning off the preamp. I have a speaker protection which has AC sensing to turn off it's relay(like 20ms)for disconnecting the speakers. But the poping noise of preamp on turning off is even faster than that. I just dont get the nature of pop of the preamp because power capacitors should hold voltage for 5-10 second.

I got the pop from the speakers right after I turn on the integrated amplifier (other equipment has turned on first). The pop noise is louder when the I.A. is cold but noise is much reduced (to almost none) when the I.A. is warmed up. Why is it and how can I cope with it? Thank you.

I have a onkyo sub that has annoying popping at random and ive tried everything to try and fix it and i have no clue whats left to do other then buy a new sub which i dont want to do as when it works it sounds awesome. but at lower volume it tends to have random pops. When i play sound (full spectrum) directly to it it never ever pops so it must be related to either the receiver or the fact its not getting a input in the range it works. Only fixes online i found is getting a non auto standby sub. even tho when it goes to standby it doesnt pop but clicks and goes into standby which isnt a issue.

A lot of low output level components like CD players and preamps use a blocking capacitor on the output to block DC and low frequency thumps from the output. But they require a fraction of a second to charge up, hence the thump.

One may also consider leaving their equipment on 'round the clock. The only time a preamp should really require a shut-down (that is to say, beyond one being away from home for more than a couple of days) is, either, when interconnecting signal or power cables, or if one's digital preamp functions misbehave during operation, indicating the need for a processor reboot (as Paul described -- power amp OFF at shutdown first, followed by the preamp. And, at startup, preamp ON first, followed by the power amp). Of course, purely analog rigs don't develop processor issues. All things being equal, most modern A/V equipment is designed to run reliably within a particular operating temperature range that should remain fairly constant for best performance, and leaving the system on may be of benefit in this regard. In fact, it may actually (though this may seem counter-intuitive) extend the life of the equipment by avoiding the repeated, potentially damaging power surges between voltage rails, in the same manner that leaving a conventional, incandescent light bulb on typically results in extended life (in my experience) over one that's cycled daily. Same principal, I mean. Also, for those concerned, 'green-conscious' individuals, home audio equipment left to idle typically doesn't draw that much more current than the same unit left to standby. Don't want to hear that 'pop'? Try leaving the equipment on.

so the turn on pop is the same electrical DC signal the speakers receive for example, listening to music and movies

What's happening when you hear a pop when shutting it off?
@wilcalint
@wilcalint 5 жыл бұрын
It can, read my post above. If the device has a HUGE amount of stored energy, like a huge pure Class A Power Amp, that energy has to go somewhere at power off. It ends up in your speakers, sometimes.

I have an integrated DAC/preamp/Amplifier unit. It only has one power button that turns on everything at once, presumably. I get the popping noise fairly consistently in my headphones. Should I be concerned? Should I plug in my headphones after I turn on my unit?

In my opinion, yes. You should plug in your headphones after you turn on your unit, especially since you've noticed the power-on 'pop' through them. Most headphone/in ear monitor manufacturers recommend this very thing.

Switching on 1. Turn on pre amp and wait 60 seconds 2. Power amp volume levels at zero then switch on Switching off 1. Power amp volume levels down to zero, then switch off 2. Pre amp off * remember this, could save you some $ and hassles with repairs...speaking from experience :P

@@petermartin9494 While that's true, for some of there are other concerns. I use the volume controls on this keyboard to control the sound system, so the amp and preamp are at higher volume levels and then the KB volume is set accordingly. For me, turning down the volumes are definitely recommended.

Yep, that's right. Most components, like caps, are charging up as the power supply rails come up to speed, etc. Just about everything will emit a voltage spike when powered up, unless, like Paul said, there is a time delay relay at the output! MOST modern solid state amps have that relay now, which also, in most cases, monitors the power supply rails and will open the path to the speakers if there is an abnormally. Now, do tube amps pop when turned on? Hmm. You wouldn't think so, because of the tube filaments have to heat up, and that's a slower process than a solid state amp, so all the voltages are sort of "ramped" up instead of slamming one way or another. Computer sound cards are terrible culprits of turn on pop! All of mine pop when the opsys loads the drivers. Plus they have no mercy when I shut down the computer! BTW, my vintage old Hafler preamp pops when powered up! LOL.

Why not keep the capacitors fully charged all the time with a trickle charge all the time in a standby mode the way a car battery charger uses a trickle charge to maintain battery voltage wen it's full charged and then when you turn it on you bypass the resistor that limits the trickle current? This way there is no thump and you can eliminate the relay. BTW which relay contacts sound best, P&B, Claire, or what and how often do you replace them?

Get home, turn on my PC, turn on my Amp/preamp. Popping noise happens. 2 mins later, log into KZfaq, see this video was uploaded 32 mins ago. Now that's timing.

First, let your PC fully boot up before you turn on the amp. Sometimes the sound driver software will create a spike when it loads. Check for an updated driver if you can, it (may) solve it. My pc doesn't do this but I've had ones that did. I remember in the early days of PC sound capability sometimes the driver software would crash in mid use and send a damaging noise through to the speakers. As far as I know those days are pretty much over.

@@InsideOfMyOwnMind My DAC doesn't use any sound drivers, if that make sense. It gets recognized as a regular sound device as if i were plugging in headphones via USB. Never been any firmware or driver updates for it. Pretty sure I always turn it on after my PC, I have windows installed on SSD so it boots pretty fast
