Why Do Rides Have Rider Restrictions?

An extreme amount of thought and engineering goes into determining what casts, amputations, and other conditions can ride an attraction. There is no obvious standard because every ride is different, however amusement parks do the best they can to make their rides both safe and accessible for all guests.

Very informative video! As a ride op, I’ve gone through lots of drama regarding these policies. Not as much with braces and casts, but more so with underlying conditions. I’ve witnessed a few guests over the years saying they’re pregnant when I push down their restraint, when the safety guide says to not ride if you’re pregnant! Stay safe ladies and gents!

Honestly I really hope a high thrill roller coaster that is built specifically to be accessible is made. I understand totally why 100% accessibility isn’t possible. I just think it would be a fascinating project to create a special type of restraint for this purpose.

Coaster safety is engineered based on riders within a specific range of limb length. People too long won't fit. People too short could end up flying off the ride to their deaths. At the entrance to the long path to Viper, parents sometimes yelled, some claimed "You guys let him ride it before." Yeah, well, too bad little Timmy can't be tossed from his seat on the first bunny hill, I would think, because the parents would really be freaking out then. "I didn't let him ride, or any other child not tall enough. I'm very sorry. Our rules are extremely strict on these matters," I would say. (Ride Op, Six Flags Darien Lake, 2001) Safety first, then fun.

My family has the opposite problem. My brother and cousin are both over 6’2 and they have to get height-checked all the time lmao. My cousin and I rode the Whizzer at SFGA when I was like 8 and the poor guy nearly got hit in the face with a branch. I 100% agree that height restrictions need to be followed too.

I had never thought about casts/braces being an issue until my son was in a walking boot when we went to a local fair. Most operators didn’t blink an eye but when we tried to do the bumper cars, the attendant was very worried. I explained to him that it was nothing broken and they let him on. It was a removable boot too so we could have taken it off if needed. (For context, I was not upset at all by this. I was glad they were showing some care and concern!) 😂

A lot of those restrictions make sense at least. They aren't random things to make it more difficult for someone to ride, it's so they don't get hurt or get hurt worse.

its interesting how these days they dont usually include the g forces the ride can reach. my mum has a condition aggravated by intense g force and one time we did not see it listed on a ride and assumed it was an ok ride. turns out we shouldve done our research because it went up to 4 g. she was in a lot of pain for days after

probably because that could scare people to not so it but they have already expressed 4g. That seems like something you should have prepared for before going.

Has B&M always not allowed casts on their rides? When my sister was in middle school her friend had an arm cast, the one that goes up to the elbow. We all went to Carowinds (owned by Cedar Point) and I know we rode a few rides, and at least one B&M (I think they have like 3). This was probably like 13 years ago.

Not a rule pe se but last visit to sfne I realized that it's a lot less fun on a ride if you are too big. I had a few rides that the restraints had to be kind of forced down and while they did lock. I was about to walk away from a few coasters because of it and the ride ops were really nice and insisted I try and stuff- which again I did get on and the restraints locked but with some force. If felt like when I got some major air time I would be busting open the restraints- which I know is really not likely because the restraints are made to not open once closed but it was freaky while you're hitting some turns and other elements. Basically like a lot of these restrictions are also important to riders specifically and why we should all listen to restrictions is because even if you could go on the ride it wouldn't be fun when you're not feeling secured, being bumped around with a cast on, worrying that your heart might literally stop because it's weak. (I gained weight due to depression so please don't shame me for being fat y'all 😭 I'm working on it)

Most rides say that those with prosthetics can't ride. Makes sense because said limb can be jarred loose by the force of the ride with deadly consequences (an Iraqi veteran who lost both legs fell out of Superman the Ride at Six Flags New England). And height limits make sense because even taller riders won't have their legs held in properly. Examples include Superman: Ride of Steel at Six Flags America (height limit 76 inches)

I’m a clinician in an orthotic and prosthetic practice (for those curious, the difference is that an orthotic is any type of bracing that supports an existing body part while a prosthetic replaces a part) so this is super interesting! I’m curious with regards to the casting thing though- you mentioned that sometimes it’s due to the forces of the rides that casts are not allowed on at all- do you know if the thinking there that the manufacturers feel the forces may be stronger than the cast and thus worsen a fracture, or is it more that having one body part significantly heavier than the rest of one’s body could cause a problem/strain on the rider?

Depending how the prosthetic is attached, i wonder if it’d count as a “loose article” Ofc ik prosthetics aren’t loose in everyday life, but i could see some amusement park companies wanting to be cautious especially bc of the forces

Something I absolutely despise is when a guest isn't able to ride due to something like an amputation or size, and they say it's "discrimination." And say they want to sue or complain. Okay, well, if you're gonna sue someone, sue the laws of physics.

Out of curiosity, my fiancée was born almost completely with no legs, just 2 inches of femur. Would he be able to use the accessibility harness if offered? The park in Colorado that you covered, he actually used to work there and said they let him on a rollercoaster and almost was ejected from it.
@notadvertiserfriendly6084
@notadvertiserfriendly6084 17 күн бұрын
i’m not the uploader but the example at 3:52 says people need at least 4 in. of leg to be safe to ride while using the harness. (I’m not a ride operator so idk if they check that by holding a ruler up to people or having them try on the harness and checking the fit) Not sure if that varies between different harness or ride types though.

I currently have a condition that isn't listed on ride signs. I still refuse to ride anything because I don't know how a ride's g-forces would affect me. When I had a spaned ankle my dad only let me a rides that I was safe on. He taught me ride safty which I now use. I may not like it, but I'd rather be bored in my bed then be bored in a hospital bed.
