Many tanks in Russia carry a log of wood, see why.
The use of logs in tanks such as the M4 Sherman and T-34 dates back to World War II. But it is still used in modern tanks like the T-62, T-72, T-80, and T-90.
The large contact area of the tracks distributes the weight force that the vehicle applies on the ground, resulting in a much lower pressure compared to wheeled vehicles. And that's why tracked vehicles have a good ability to travel on swamp and mud soil.
The tracks are very efficient for swamp and mud terrain, but there are situations where even they can't handle it. And that's where the idea of these logs comes from. They are used to help the tank climb out of the mud.
