Why do Russian tanks carry this log?

Many tanks in Russia carry a log of wood, see why.
The use of logs in tanks such as the M4 Sherman and T-34 dates back to World War II. But it is still used in modern tanks like the T-62, T-72, T-80, and T-90.
The large contact area of the tracks distributes the weight force that the vehicle applies on the ground, resulting in a much lower pressure compared to wheeled vehicles. And that's why tracked vehicles have a good ability to travel on swamp and mud soil.
The tracks are very efficient for swamp and mud terrain, but there are situations where even they can't handle it. And that's where the idea of these logs comes from. They are used to help the tank climb out of the mud.

Logs are superior. As a programmer, I love to use logs as well.

In the original Star Trek TV series Kirk used to say: "Captain's log........" (in almost every episode) but we never actually saw the tree trunk itself))

Yes, it is the most modern, but until now they were in the testing phase, despite having a few units on the battlefield, largely due to the lack of parts and electronic components. But, as you mentioned, Russia says they are going to send several units to the battlefield now in 2023, let's see if it happens.

@@adrianbalboa5353 that's the number counted by calculating every batch of them they've been producing and shipping , the Russians didn't claim they had 900.

Yes but no one will call an recovery vehicle when you dont have to and when you can just use the log... That's like saying well why would i use the reserve tire that i have in my car and that is literally used just for swapping the blown one if i can pay thousands of dollars to tow me?

How are recovery vehicles are doing in Ukrainian counter-offensive?
@troffmad
@troffmad Жыл бұрын
Very well. If under "doing" you mean to burn like a torch. Well, the same is true about tanks, most likely no one even remembers about the log under artillery fire

if they are lucky they could go and take it asap, but most of the time the destroyed vehicle will be targeted by artillery, so in order to safely take it they have to advance first
