Why do some European and NATO leaders support Ukrainian strikes on Russia with Western arms?

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz and French President Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday spoke in favor of allowing Ukraine to attack Russian positions inside Russia with Western weapons. "We think that we should allow them to neutralize military sites where missiles are fired, from where ... Ukraine is attacked," Macron said at a joint press conference alongside the German chancellor following talks at Schloss Meseberg near Berlin, the official state guest house of the German Federal Republic. At the same time, he stressed that "we should not allow them to touch other targets in Russia, and obviously civilian capacities. "Macron’s comments came on the third and final day of a state visit to Germany.
Scholz was more cautious, but said he had no legal objections to Macron's approach. He emphasized that as long as Ukraine respected international law and the conditions of countries supplying the weapons, it was "allowed to defend itself." Germany and other countries have made the transfer of weapons to Ukraine subject to strict conditions, such as that they may not be used to attack targets in Russia over fears that would lead to an escalation. Scholz noted recently when saying Germany would not be sending long-range Taurus missiles to Ukraine that they would be capable of striking Moscow from Ukrainian territory. Russian President Vladimir Putin has warned of "serious consequences" if Western countries allowed Ukraine to use their weapons to strike targets in Russia.

@@MusicShortsGlobal Once you align with an enemy and threaten there is going to be the promised response. You can't simply wish it away. Russia has stated for decades now that it has a red line - that is that neither Georgia nor Ukraine would be allowed to join NATO. "Should" has nothing to do with real world geopolitics - there is only "What is." Realpolitik. Ukraine did not leave Russia alone. Instead, it allied with Russia's enemies and armed for war. So of course Russia was going to respond as the US desired it to. As the US planned in 2019. See: "Extending Russia Competing from Advantageous Ground" the PDF is free. Put out by RAND at the request of the US Army. Everything happening now is explained there. So, unfortunately, Ukraine will either win or lose on the battlefield.

History noticeably did not stop in 1914 and WWII started because appeasement did not work with the last land-hungry dictator who pretended to protect minorities abroad only to invade its neighbours, to fight against western moral decadency (meaning LGBTs and mixed societies) only to send soldiers r*pe, plunder and deport locals, who killed political opponents and relied on fascist para-militaries, who promised to wash out a recent humiliation by restoring and protecting a millenial empire that would have stayed undefeated, had he not been betrayed by foreign agents and backstabbers at home who agreed to unfair treaties and mutilated the homeland. @porter9494 "They can attack them with their own weapons. Germany is not at war with Russia, Ukraine is." But Russia is using Iranian Drones in Ukraine, not to mention North Korea's artillery shells, DJI drones or more from China, etc. Russia can attack any part of Ukraine but Ukraine cannot "touch" any Russian land, seems like a sick joke, but it's true. Ukraine's intention for attacking Russia is to degrade their ability to attack Ukraine, not to invade Russia [they don't have the numbers as well]. While Russia on the other hand had invaded Ukraine's land. Looking at just the surface, it seems like a lesson to aim for/posses nuclear bombs, since others would treat you "seriously" and you "could do" whatever you want. "Makes me wonder" why some countries are gaining nuclear capabilities, instead of worldwide nuclear disarmament.

Restricting Ukrain to only use these weapons within their territorry was a mistake of NATO to start with. I think it was Gen. Hodges who pointed this out for a while now, by doing so, russia becomes a safe haven where their military can retreat to and resupply or just amass troops at a border while Ukrain does not have that option and is constantly attacked. I mean what brainfart would not take the chance to attack troop concentrations about to attack a certain frontline? @@MagMar-kv9ne Not to mention that Russia always exaggerates their numbers in everything by adding broken, old, and defunct equipment with junk that gets destroyed on the battlefield anyways, yet has a much lower defense budget than nations with smaller nuclear arsenals. You see numbers, but when you total everything together 1 does not equal 1. How many nuclear weapons can they support and maintain since they have to constantly replace fissionable materials and many of the missile and bomb parts as they are degraded by the radioactivity? Using Russian logic, Russia is counting old nukes that are no longer in use or even capable of making a popcorn fart by now. The oligarchs have also been selling tank parts, making half of their vaunted tank numbers actually useless skeletons. How many nukes have those oligarchs sold to other countries if we follow that logic? As we have seen time and again, the chihuahua barks loudly, but his bite is small. Circus barkers make loud noises when they let the clowns loose, but those with real power and potential remain quiet and wait until that power is needed.

This artifice of "here, shoot this at my enemy for me so I don't get in trouble with him" is going to fall apart very soon right in front of our eyes. NATO has found that its older, simpler weapons can't hurt Russia, so it want to use its new, advanced ones. However it takes years of training and a multi-domain professional military to use advanced weaponry---something Ukraine doesn't have. Biden could give Ukraine a Ford-class supercarrier, but Ukraine couldn't find 10 men qualified to operate it. So that means the US Navy would have to, and at that point, the US and Russia are at war; Ukraine is just the battlefield.
