In California an experienced surgical tech with deep expertise in the more challenging specialties, willing to leave LA and SF can make $40-60+ an hour in 2023. Travelers are making even more. If you're looking at that number and thinking I want that job, it's one of if not the hardest job in the hospital physically. You deal with vomit, shit, piss, blood, viruses and disease, burnt out surgeons who think they're God and poor hospital administration. Not to mention working long, long hours (on call you can be working 24 hours+ straight, nobody to help you, no breaks). Also not all techs are equal so if you don't get good at the job and can only scrub the basic cases, they'll pay you a lot less than someone say who can scrub orthopedics and hearts. To the newbies, LEARN YOUR ANATOMY

So, yesterday was my last day as a student surgical tech and let me tell you, she is not lying. You really don't realize how stressful this path is. We had to do 9 hour shifts 5 days a week during our clinical rotation. It was like a real job (though most employed techs do 12hr shifts) and it is not easy. You have to get good at it or it (healthcare in general) will eat you alive. Learn the procedures (because some doctors won't tell you what instrument they need next and some can't look up from the surgical site to see what you have in your hand or what you have on your mayo stand), learn anatomy, learn instruments (more than just the general instruments in the book), and know aseptic technique. Get good shoes, get compression socks, and stretch (because lead aprons, full case carts, and heavy instrument trays are going to really put work on your back). But if you get into this and you see that this job is not for you, don't be afraid to admit that and find something that works for you. It does not have to be SPD or being a nurse. It can be something else in the medical field. If I had to say I would prefer something that has to do with diagnostics or even dental.

This is why I tell a lot of people to do their research and volunteer to see if they would love doing it or not and don’t wast money and time on it !! I was like nah. Girl, don't get me wrong. CNA'S are a huge help but it was a less stressful job then being a nurse (LPN). There were times I wished I could go back to being a CNA 😂 This girl I know is a surgical tech...definitely more stressful then being a CNA. You should shadow a surgical tech for a week and see for yourself. I remember a medical assistant saying that nurses and medical assistants are the same and she didn't understand why there was a pay difference. Her and the other medical assistants were aweful to me because they felt that the nurses were there to take over their jobs. I left that job eventually. Fast forward, she became a nursing student and was on my floor and I asked her "Do you still believe that nurses and medical assistance are the same?" She said "Heck no" 😂

I came out of HS with a ST cert and worked two years (18-20) before I quit to become an EMT. Then became a medic to get that patient care experience. My experience was alright since I worked in Renal and some General Surgery. It was the fonky old a$$ nurses that helped me decide. The docs were cool because I was going to college for eventually med school. Mind you, this was in the late 80s/early 90s. Best thing I did to maintain composure and not get fired was to befriend the docs no matter their personality-networked with other STs at surrounding hospitals and went to the meetings. They liked that I was interested in the department business and went out with respect from my peers.

I know people usually get an associates degree and I would rather have thorough training and comprehension, so I’m a bit skeptical but still interested. And I'm getting agitated as much as I am being a surgical first assist! I've probably been sick a total of 1 year out of seven that I've been a surgical tech and at this f****** point (I'm sorry I get so aggravated because this stupid phone won't let me speak my mind). I don't know why we don't bond together and Sue strike for more money because of the deterioration it does to our bodies. But I'm at the point now that I'm going to sue the hospital I work for because they have been harassing me because I keep getting sick from working with these degenerate people that they keep shipping in from 6 or 7 other hospitals. Because all they care about is making their bottom dollar from the six hospitals and we are the hub in and why everybody keeps getting sick and we are 0.0. Help if you can cuz I can't take it anymore and I want to spend time with

I apologize for my response looking like it's all over the place. I was attempting to talk to text as I was driving and my phone kept cutting out. Basically what I was saying is that.... I love being a tech.... I just hate how sedentary it is and how you have to deal with an inquisition Everytime you call out because no matter what..... Any hospital I've EVER WORKED AT IS ALWAYS "SHORT STAFFED" DUE TO BUDGET.... YET THEY CAN GIVE MANAGMENT INCENTIVE BONUSES and all the suits five to six figure boosts....our pay should have a significant increase ...across the board.... If S.A.G. & A.F.T.A. are striking due to pay wage.... We should be right next to them if not above them!!!!
