Luckily, my Mom actually understands the music because 2 of her younger brothers were metalheads in the 80s. So when I was younger and be listening to bands like Slayer, Testament, Kreator, etc, my Mom would be like "hey I know that song. Haven't heard it in a while"

Wow... not a SINGLE mention of Motorhead? They were the first band that punks and metalheads would both listen to. Music organizers couldn't classify them. Even Lemmy didn't pick a genre, he just stuck with "We play rock'n'roll". East coast and west coast thrashers both worshiped Motorhead's speed and aggression. Metallica was basically a Motorhead cover band starting out. Overkill took their name from a Motorhead album. Max Cavalera got the name for his band Sepultura from the Portuguese translation of the Motorhead song "Dancing on your Grave". Add to this the influence of punk, whether pop or hardcore, and the flashy guitar style of other NWOBHM bands, and you have US thrash. German thrash bands looked and sounded more evil because, like Slayer, they took more of their ideas from the first Black Metal bands such as Venom, Mercyful Fate and Hellhammer/Celtic Frost. Listen to the vocals and lyrics of early Sodom, Destruction and Kreator and you can hear how much they were influenced by Venom, right down to the ridiculous assumed names. Tankard probably owes more to Motorhead and punk.

Shspurs1 that’s hilarious. I don’t ever remember melodic guitar solos and 7 minute songs being punk. Thrash has the attitude and speed of hardcore punk but the sound, guitar tone, note and chords, melodic solos, and multiple time signatures in songs is a hallmark of heavy metal. Also most thrash players are meticulous with the perfection of their technique, not so much punk.

That and the next # LPs were the strongest 4 in a row intense Metal since the early days of Zeppelin and Sabbaths first four. Brilliant and evolving. After they stupidly kicked out Dave then truly regained that evolving edge. and started making LP's filled with same sounding filler with only a couple of great tunes. While in their golden era they had no filler. Nevertheless when LIVE they could be even better than earlier as the incredible tight but awesome stuff on *Still Reigning shows. But they are playing their Best Songs from the older LP's. Tighter than before but still explosive, After 2005 the rot became terminal .

The music you heard, and the other bands you played shows with, they were all literally sharing the same geographic environment. Musicians were jamming in each other's garages, influencing each other directly, and bands were competing with each other in different ways. Now, anyone can listen to any subgenre from anywhere in the world! Which has its pros and cons.

Age of Quarrel come out in '86! NYHC was born and grew about the same time as NY trash bands were. They were fans, and there was respect, but actual musical influence, I don't think so. thrash bands all had something different about them, there was a uniqueness, there were hooks, and subtleties, was not always fast aggression, not to mention a lot of really good voices joey belladonna, and bobby blitz to name a few, can't really say the same about the subgenres of metal that followed

West Coast /Bay Area had two MAJOR misses: 1) the omission of Death Angel, who were kids that didn't push the musical envelope, they cut it to pieces. Also Vio-lence and Metal Church deserved a mention, given their influence. Props on knowing the Gene Hoglan lead Dark Angel, also speed tip of the cap to Exodus, and I always thought that of the historical big four that they had the best guitar riffs. 2) to discuss the developmentally embryonic stages and, and then the erupting onto the scene, rather than emerging, or birthing, of, Death Metal without highlighting major pioneers of the genre, Possessed, who were progenitors lyrically, vocally, rhythmically, particularly harmonically and melodically, embracing the metal tradition of atonal and dissonant sounds. Honorable mention omissions to Voivod, Flotsam and Jetsam, Merciful Fate, Morbid Angel, Celtic Frost, and possibly the band who influenced more subgenres than any other, beginning with Death Metal, Chuck Schuldiner, and a handful of some of metals greatest musicians, in the band Death. I was surprised to see a quick discussion on the much overblown, and musically completely inaccurate, comparisons between Metallica and Testament, referencing Testament as being so very similar to Metallica. Chuck Billy had a much more powerful voice with a dramatically wider range available to him it is voice, in comparisons to James Hetfield, the lead guitar Oreck of Alex skolnick, and the application of Music Theory in Alex school next playing, and in the bands writing, was also a step up from what Metallica was capable of doing. Drumming between the two bands was pretty similar with do use of straight beats, double bass beats, skank Beats, and both fans exploring off time Beats before it was commonplace. We're Metallica had the clear Advantage was in Cliff Burton as a bassist, and as a songwriter, in terms of his ability to construct songs, construct music, construct overall themes, and even write lyrics.

I always stuck Exodus, Testament and Suicidal into the Anthrax wing of thrash, where they ham up the partying, the moshing and the skating, and downplay the killing, the maiming and the Devil.
@LuisCastillo-rt5nk

I mean Exodus' first album is literally about a devil baby sewn to another, and the very first lyrics are "Black magic rites on this black evil night, begin with the slice of the blade", while Pleasures of the Flesh's original cover was a drawing of the band eating with a cannibal tribe. So they definitely didn't downplay the killing and the Devil.

The origin of Iron Maidens 'tumbling sound' being of course Led Zeppelin's JOHN BONHAM's drumming. See 'Achilles Last Stand' the song Iron Maiden themselves says gave them the idea of having that be their signature Rhythm. Just as Sabbath's Ozzy, Geezer, Deep Purple and Judas Priest say Led Zeppelin I was the intense drum powered LP that at the start of 1969 gave them all the example that would inspire THEIR new direction. Metal! Zeppelin the Beatles of 1969 to 1974. Who like the Beatles inspired so much; head banging like 'immigrant Song', Punk intensity with 'Good Times Bad Times' and dark chords later Sabbathized with Dazed and Confused and even Hippie metal folk music.

just a footnote to german thrash though: it was destinctively working class. those bands grew out of the most mining heavy areas of germany, highly industrialized, and not only were guys like Sodom literally working in the pits, they grew out of generations of blue collar culture which is quite distinct in that area ("ruhrpott" or just "pott" which means something akin to english pot) - and those bands grew out of a time when those mines and heavy industry started letting masses of people off so rampant unemployment and poverty throughout rough communities of heavy drinking physical workers. Tom Angelripper actually spoke at length about his days in the mines and how it was when he first started only living off of music. For a german, thats the most distinct about these guys, also because their dialects are very closely associated to those ruhr workering class people. It was partly even seen by german media as basically a political or socioeconomic expression of the circumstances of that area in that time. somewhat akin to the original british skinhead subculture maybe.

Varying levels of hardcore punk and NWOBHM influence. East coast tends to.lean toward hardcore and be heavily rhythmic. The UK was innovating in the extreme genres while 80s thrash was peeking. They kind of circumvented thrash and went straight to napalm death, bolt thrower, carcass, cathedral. The mighty Brits were still innovating just not in the thrash genre as much. I would argue they were innovating more as thrash was well defined by the mid 80s. The brits were taking things further.
