what confuses me is how’re other countries covers have so much creativity & effort put into them with a few duds but american covers have like 100 duds. it’s the same “put a lady in a gown with wet hair in front of a grey background” 🙄

Vogue China & Taiwan are really killing it-beautiful concepts, amazingly executed. Clear artistry involved. U.S. Vogue is so embarrassing, I'm legit embarrassed for us! Artisticly devoid and, as you said, heavily relying on the star power of whoever is on their cover. If they replaced the famous people in these covers and photoshoots with some rando, then absolutely no one would care.

ive noticed that vogue in Asia offer a fantasy whereas vogue in Europe gives real life/high fashion events and American vogue just celebrates celebrities

I think they are trying to follow the trend of the all natural and simple look. That's why all the photos are boring. They stopped taking risks. They forgot that they are a fashion magazine and they should be creative and they should be the ones setting trends, not follow them. And you can still be creative with fashion, the background and the general aesthetic while giving the "all natural" vibe. You just have to find the right people for the job who know what they are doing.

International Vogues have been putting US Vogue to shame for years now, they've made themselves irrelevant at this point... I don't understand why they didn't switch up the creative team a long time ago!

The Zara catalogue now looks “editorial” because Vogue US got so lazy, not because Zara suddenly became groundbreaking. It’s embarassing, tbh. A fashion magazine should be some of the craziest, most conceptually challenging thing ever, aka take something as basic and daily as clothes and transform it into art

I personally like how Asian vogue incorporates socio-cultural aspects in their photography that pretty much captures the collective identity in artistic contemporary form. Like how Vogue Korea incorporates hanbok, Vogue China incorporates their traditional art, and Vogue Singapore incorporating Perankan aesthetic etc etc. It's giving that ethereal vibes.

honestly my favorite vogue covers are the ones from the 1910s. the art is just so beautiful and fun you can tell each artist actually took their job seriously. then you get to the 70s and it just a wall of up close potraits of a womans face

I'm so tired of seeing models and artist pose with a blank expression. IT`S SO BORING. I see so many videos and pictures that are ruined because the person looks like they're disassociating, all because people see exaggerated (and even normal) facial expressions as "ugly." Screaming, crying, yelling it's all beautiful. And you can convey so much with a simple smile or frown. some of these models look like a deer in headlights and only get away with it because they're conventionally attractive. Everything is about features and not expression when usually it should be the other way around.

I think that another problem is that many western celebrities care too much about their face? Like, they're scared of not being seen as pretty, scared to deliver an impactful imagine, and that's what's holding them back!

the reason the britain covers blend together is mostly because they follow the greige agenda. its extremely minimalistic and safe to try to make it "timeless" but also mostly because it is simply the colorscheme that fits their culture in comparison to for example african or asian cultures, where bold colors in their house & clothing are prominent. mina le just released a very interesting video about it regarding home decor but its interesting to see that the trend also influenced the magazines

As an artist its really interesting how obvious the editing is in the american vogue covers? Like pretty much all of these are clearly edited, but the good ones like the zendaya one or the taiwanese heat wave one with the gold in the water use that editing to place their subject in their photo or make them look almost like a painting themself. The editing is not like... taking away from the photo, but adding to it like deepening shadows and sharpening colors. On the other hand, the american ones definitely take away from the image itself, drawing the eye to strange places and just like. covering the whole image in one color? Which doesn't make any of it stand out. It's just an odd and seemingly incredibly amateur choice.

Those covers give 45yo housewife magazine with fast and easy food receipes, tips on making your own herbs garden, and a free pattern for a skirt.... To be fair I don't think Vogue France is that much better, but still. And that's why growing up I was reading science magazines!

You're extremely perceptive and understand the need for a good concept, good color choices, framing, and I'm really amazed because as someone studying graphic design I too pay a lot of attention to that kind of stuff and not a lot of people have an eye for it. I really think everything you said was spot on and how you explain your train of thought, I know a lot of people think of graphic design and photography in general as a bit of a nerdy thing and you make it fun to listen to, so I look forward to more videos like this if you choose to do so!

They are not only conveying a very real issue but also bringing it in terms of concept, artistry, design, execution... I mean, we need more of those.

The craziest part to me is that all the people involved with each shoot have thousands of dollars to play with and this is what we get. There's so much money, read as potential, being wasted constantly every day it's dizzying. Whenever there's a lazy portrait, the extra dollars go into someone's pocket instead of the page and that's what breaks my heart the most. Yes the models should be paid what their star power brings but it shouldn't be at the expense of the finished result. We deserve a society with less greed and more art. This video is art. 💐🥂

I think a common misconception is that American Vogue is a fashion magazine for fashion people and it’s not. It’s target audience has always been women who can afford the clothes, who themselves are often afraid of artistic fashion. The wealthy soccer mom from Texas or the investment banker from Wisconsin understand the Jennifer Lawrence cover. That beauty approach translates to them. American women often appreciate visuals they can see themselves in, whereas women of other cultures with wealth seek fantasy and opulence (India, China, Italy). American Vogue focuses on retail and business. If you look at NYC in relation to the other fashion capitals you will see the same.

Hi! I think you would appreciate some of the Vogue Ukraine covers, not for 2022 ofc (the January one slaps though!) but 2020-2021 you could definitely see more and more work being put into the artistic aspect of it all.

I will always love the British Vogue Feb 2022 issue with all dark skinned women. It is so beautiful especially because I grew up with one of the models and I’m always so shocked but proud of her achievements. As someone who is also dark-skinned and South Sudanese it’s just so special to me 🫶🏿

I feel like a big reason is that Vogue is no longer the trendsetter but is being dictated by trends. I’m a Chinese American artist who spends a lot of time in China and the political economical climate is still very much maximalist and materialist, unlike America which has taken a huge turn in the last two years. I feel Vogue no longer has autonomy it’s just depending on the socio-political climate which has been leaning much more towards the “natural” aesthetic, at least on the surface.

The reason why American Vogue tends to make simplistic covers is because Ana Wintour (the chief editor) wants the covers to relate more to the average reader. This was a change she made when she first became editor. Before her, the covers would always feature headshots of popular models with heavy makeup and expensive jewelry, but after she became chief, she changed the style of the covers to feel more casual and natural. In fact, for the first cover she did as chief editor, she showcased a lesser-known model, laughing, with hair across her face and wearing jeans; the printers of the magazine ended up sending the picture back because they thought Vogue had sent the wrong image. (It's true, you can look it up.) So while the current cover choices may seem artless to some, to others, it's genuine and realistic fashion that they can try themselves.

I go to LCF in London and literally the student photography work they put on our walls is sooo much more exciting and interesting than whatever this is. Vogue UK def had a (slightly) better year than the US - I have no idea what's going on but if they're really struggling to find the talent I'm sure there are plenty of creative directors and photographers around who would loveeee to help out 😂

You should go over some of GQs recent covers. Their photoshoot last year with Robert Pattinson was so fun and compelling in my opinion, but they picked the blandest photo of the bunch to be the cover.

This was a really cool video, but I was also curious to see what the photo in back looked like more than anything 😂

From back in the 80’s on, I noticed one magazine would “get” the zeitgeist and the others would be stale. Sometimes a new magazine would evolve and be able to capture the aesthetic of the moment. Elle was the 80’s. I think Vogue and Bazaar were the essence of the 90’s. The 2000’s brought us a barrage of really great experimental sometimes extreme wearable art and new magazines.

Vogue China & Vogue Taiwan are just immaculate. So many jaw-dropping shoots. Zhong Lin’s and Leslie Zhang’s pictures are all over my Pinterest boards haha. Vogue Arabia also has some great covers. Btw Chinese photographer Ren Hang created some iconic photos of people posing with fish. 🐟🐟🐟 I think the thing about fashion is that a lot of people, whether it's photographers or designers, refer back to a reference of a reference of a reference of something. Their work makes sense in their little bubble, but they are a bit blind to what their work looks like to most people. The problem with the Florence Pugh pictures (I think) is mostly the poses and Pugh's expressions, she looks really bored (no hate, she’s great). Maybe Florence just didn't feel the concept or didn't vibe with the photographer or something else. The lighting is great and the colors used are great and fish aren't necessarily bad props (unless you're vegan maybe). It could have worked, but there's just something not quite right about it.
