Building and painting all of those little soldiers and warriors takes long enough... now I need terrain, too? Atom explains why good terrain is a necessity and also not as hard as you think.

Back when my brothers were heavily into Fantasy and 40k, our mum liked doing craft and used terrain making as a way to be involved in their lives. That was a particularly good time for us and the local Wargame community as we shared our stuff (her river segments in particular were great).

Terrain is also something you'll need to occasionally consider when choosing an army. When I started playing Warhammer Fantasy in the 90's I fell in love with the fluff and visuals of the Wood Elves; later I realized I was the only one in our group that had to lug around a box of terrain (trees), in addition to my army because so many of their special rules relied on having forests. It was so important to their strategies that I couldn't just hope that the place we were going would have forest terrain. 40K Kroot and Catachans used to have similar issues as well.

My one tip for terrain, pet stores. Gold fish tank accessories with a little touch up with dry brushing or flocking can be cheap and amazing. Also, a company called Angry Mojo Games does some cool MDF laser cut stuff as well that's good and pretty cheap.

You're forgetting about the planet known as TheDormRoom. This planet is known to have houses that look like books, and trees that look like pop cans. Also, trees that look like beer cans, too. Hazardous terrain is said to resemble pretzels, as well.

I recently made some cement road blocks with broken rebar sticking out, out of some left over plastic frames from my spiritseer and used some of them on the base and the rest I scatter on my battlefield. Making terrain and base additions gives me more to work on when telling a story with my miniatures and I hope to make some more in the future.

I think I enjoy the terrain aspect of the hobby as much - if not more - than the army building. Your location is always important - what is the significance of this place? Why are the armies fighting over it? As someone who really gets into the narrative aspect, a good battlefield goes a long way into turning a game into a battle, and something you think of in more than just terms of winning and losing a game. Also, anyone remember the old (very old) Necromunda card scenery with the plastic bulkheads? They were a real game changer in the 90's.

You know what my pipe dream is? A dwarven castle -- an outer wall surrounding a courtyard, and then an inner keep, within which my army would stand siege against another, much larger but worse-organized horde until reinforcements arrived. And of course I would build the whole thing myself (despite having no artistic skills).

There's a place in the UK called "Wargames tournaments" that sell MDF laser cut structures and they are the most incredible designs for a "cities of death" type board. They do a huge set for £250 that can easly cover every square inch of a 6x4' table, or if you used it like 40k terrain it would do for 2 or 3 tables. I picked that and a few other things from them a while back. Most of their other stuff is a lot less expensive but there was a freaking tonne of stuff in the box.

The problem is that some games have it difficult to have terrain. I am playing Airwar C21 lately and I have ideas for terrain and stuff but the problem is that in airwar you need very specific positions of minis so its hard to make usable terrain (even more when its a game about planes and you have to make forced perspective terrain to adapt to the look of the minis and the terrain scale). But I really do love making terrain, you can do anything with stupid stuff that's laying around I made a lot of terrain for Battletech and FoF.

In the beginning there was NO terrain whatsoever that you could buy; now you can even buy a PORTABLE BATTLE-TABLE in 6 or 8 square pieces from GAMES-WORKSHOP which is great if you got the room and don't wanna start making your own large battle-table, wich IS (no kidding) a very time-consuming undertaking... The advantage of the GW-table pieces is that it has four pieces with elevated terrain that if you put these together, you have a flat hill in the middle of your table, but you can also put two of them on each edge of your table so that the edges are elevated and in the middle is a lot of room to "rumble"... The only thing you have to do is to prime and spray-paint it, even do a finishing touch with some dry-brushing and you"re all set! The table is of course very useful to put trees, bushes or ruins, walls, flat rivers and buildings on it... I am not sure if another brand has this sort of table, but it sure saves you a lot of time

I'm a newbie to wargaming myself, and I've been enjoying Kings of War quite a bit myself. I would recommend it more from a newbie-friendly streamlined rules perspective than a price perspective; though I'd estimate it's still cheaper than WH40K, it is a mass combat game and still expects a rather large army of miniatures to play. (However, you'd want to check whether Kings of War is active at your LGS before checking it out. My LGS focuses quite a bit on Mantic's games so it works out for me.)

I find they work for 15mm - they'll probably be way too small for your 28mm - but to get round this issue, I carry a small figure and a vehicle with me (inside a small box, a jewelry ring box would work). You can take the figure out and compare it to see if it'd work.

Another really nice thing to consider is digging into your bits box to spruce up your terrain. Years ago when my brother and I were just starting to scratch build our own terrain, we just got a bunch of foam display board stuff at a local hobby store (the kind of stuff you'd use for a school display project), sprayed it to look like granite, based it on another board, and covered it with extra bits and bobs from my bits box. We were playing 40k, so I had a ton of misc stuff leftover from all my imperial guard tank/squad sprues, so we had a lot of leftover stuff like ammo boxes, fuel tanks, oil drums, etc, which we combined with some sandbags we made out of green stuff, and thing set of "razorwire" terrain that we stretched out and added to the buildings. All in all, it was like $15 for the board + some hobby sand to base it, $10 for the razorwire, and then the rest of the stuff we had on hand as leftovers, and we got like 3 smaller ruined buildings, and one larger 3-story ruined corner building. They might not look as nice as professional terrain, but we got it for less than 1/2 the cost, and it only took a day or so to put it all together from scratch.

My very first game, back in 4th ed 40k, was played on my bed (big one, 2,2*2 meters) with cushions and padded sheegs covered with a big sheet. We scattered insulation pieces on the surface and other junk. We played with bottle caps fitted with paper pieces with unit markings instead of miniatures. Only I had one miniature, one I carved out of gypsum. The most memorable game of my life. We saw alien landscapes, rockets zooming, squiggoth roaring, demons teleporting, marines dying, tau suit jetpacks blazing. We saw a great battle. Nostalgia might color this memory for me, but thing is, you don't need much fancy stuff to have a blast. Good to have, but that game told me: imagination is the key. I lost something to the rules and the WYSIWYG, the constant vying of GW for supremacy over the market, but I am relearning to just enjoy the game and wonder. Imagine. No need for terrain or fancy miniatures or superb paintjobs or whatever for that. My herald of Tzeentch will screetch in my head while blasting with purple lightning, my unmoving rhino will roar its engines and blast over rubble as it was nothing, and my knight will constantly emit whirring sounds while monitoring the battlefield and releasing a hail of bullets into my enemy's terminators while they advance without fear, coldly calculating how much their power fields can take before they collapse and reach melee distance. It is always in your head. The rest is just things you enjoy putting together and painting up.
