Thanks Gary, but I would prefer Apple to spend a bit of time with their 'Numbers' application, including the ability to link cell values of different spreadsheets (just as in Excel) and more graphs options.

Dunno if they're better now, but Samsung emoji used to be terrifyingly bad. Bless the designers at Apple, who make them soft and almost touchable. Either way, I ❤ emoji. For me who in the early days never thought I'd be interested in using them, these picture characters do speak a thousand words.

This was very informative. Especially the info about Unicode consortium. So, picking up on your example, if I were to send an emoji of a kid sitting in front of the computer from an iPhone, it would display a different emoji on an Android, possibly with an Android logo. Is this correct? 💻

Yes. That's the "Technologist With Laptop" emoji. It would have an Apple logo on an iPhone, but something else on an Android phone. The Samsung version actually has the word "Samsung" on the laptop. LG has "LG." But the default Google "Android" emoji is kinda generic.

Just type any emoji in an app like Pages where you can change the size. Then make it 250 point or so.

Hi Gary, I use emojis a lot in my notes for various purposes. I use icons to mark various types of notes like information, task calendar, event, new idea, task to analyze, question that needs to be answered, etc. however, sometimes I need to use an icon for a specific purpose that howeverdoesn’t have any corresponding emoji. Is there a way I could use any icon or tiny image that could be used in line with text just like I can use emoji? Thank you.

Depends on the app. In Pages, for instance, you can insert any image "inline" with text. In other cases you may want to use symbols from other fonts. Like check out "SF Symbols" from Apple.

@@macmost I meant preferably Notes. Tried what you proposed - SF Fonts. it works on mac (where the font is installed) but just got epmty squares on iphone/ipad, as the font is not installed there ... but anyway, thanks for the tip

I personally just use 4 emojis - heart, thumbs up, smily face and sad face. What bothers me is that when other people send me messages with emojis in them, I often have to reach for my magnifying glass to see what it is, and most of the time I am none the wiser. There should be a way of long pressing on a character for it to reveal what the hell it is meant to be! A lot of them all look the same.

If you copy and paste into a web search, you usually get a larger one at the top of the results page and a quick definition of it. Something I use from time-to-time anyway.

I never suspected al the effort and cross platform coordination emojis require, very interesting. And also I thought it had to do with emotions, not the actual Japanese ideograms. Thanks

Not easily. But depending on what you are trying to do, there are solutions. WHY do you want more than one calculator? If I knew that, maybe I could suggest something.

@macmost usually when paying bills on my PC. I open several for different accounts. It makes it easier for me.

@@miketorre16 Sounds like more of a job for a Numbers or Excel spreadsheet then. You can put the amounts in cells and then there are there for you to double-check them as you also get a sum.

@@macmost Well they are a movie streaming and movie making site/app. I don't see them making hardware or software (outside of their app and website) to the extent they should deserve a full vote. But, this is me looking from my perspective. I may be wrong but they just seem out of place.

@@jaymeez Could be that their main interests lie not with emoji, but with other characters like non-latin character sets. That's my guess. I know Netflix does a lot of work with translating tv and movies both audio and subtitles. I'm read before how they have systems to do it, even if the original video producer didn't provide translations.

Lots of reasons. They allow emotions to be expressed (plain text can often be misinterpreted without seeing a facial expression). They allow complex ideas to be sent in one character. They are fun (anything wrong with fun?).

According to Wikipedia, the Unicode Consortium has 3 paid employees and 10 volunteers. Seems pretty reasonable for the work they do. Remember Unicode is much more than just emoji. There are hundreds of languages and character sets.

Apple is sooo falling behind the other big tech companies when adding emojis is on top of new feature lists for macOS and iOS. No wonder their stock price is standing still.

But should they all be for day-to-day use? Isn't it OK to have some that are once a year use? Or only useful to some people but not others? Isn't that the same for all computer functionality?

On an un-related note - apple software has become terribly unreliable, with random bad behavior, then it works just fine, terribly frustrating.

I wouldn’t go as far as terribly unreliable. Reliability is still pretty high, but it does suffer from random issues, which is expected when the world is evolving as fast as it is. This puts pressure on companies and developers to push software out faster and faster.

What a waste of time that could be better spent on nearly anything else. What happened to using the existing letters and punctuation marks creatively.
