Simplicity means less outplay potential (sometimes) and thus makes it harder for me to know to use the kit in a way to get an advantage.

garen is easy compared to other champs, but that means you need to learn to add salt to your recipes. Garen’s flavor is reseting your autos, I’m pretty sure every of his abilities can reset your auto attacks. I’m only 5 min into the video so that might be useless info. But I remember a garen main saying this :"saying that garen only has 1 combo being Q E R is completly wrong, his main combo is aa Q aa W aa E aa R and there are dozen’s of variations to it depending on the items and the situation"

@MsDany79
@MsDany79 Ай бұрын
That is completely right. Aside from W you can reset AA with every spell and you SHOULD. You can also gap close with an AA if you cancel your E - havent seen any garens do this and so my opponent is never prepared for that. Also use Q to get rid of slows. Fog of war is your friend. if you get ganked you often can just kill the jungler for 1f1 or even kill top aswell afterwards. Always make good use of the right runes+summs/blade or shield - highly matchup dependend. Ban kayle its basically unwinable. Anything else with the right runes is winable! Even Vayne/Quinn/Varus. Just dont die and you will outscale for example darius by level 7 aswell. I win around 80% of early game with garen. Everything after lane is much more difficult! Best is just push bottom non stop with the lead from early game to create baron opportunities or push to inhib. MS is your most important stat! 1.3M Mastery garen😂

Small note about the Illaoi match up, since Shako's clone is considered a "champion" for all intents and purposes, when she casts her ultimate, she gets 1 extra tentacle spawn for every champion in the effect, so in short, Shako may be singularly one of the worst champions to gank an Illaoi that is already past level 6 and fed from before the gank.

I think it's easy to think a challenger level player wouldn't also struggle in 'low elo' and it makes the thought of trying to climb daunting when it seems like high elo players are just on another level.. which in a lot of ways they are but in the same sense this video really shines a light on just how important your mental and your macro / thought process is. Dude I havent commented yet but as someone who JUST started playing again after a 8 year break I find it awfully refreshing to see you "do bad" - mostly because it will contrast nicely what you do better once the good videos come flowing and it'll show what actually needed improving. appreciate your honesty and i appreciate you uploading struggle. i think your commentary when you’re behind is incredibly informative & it’s the reason i initially subscribed to your content way back when i found you. i’m curious, since this is a climb in a role that you’re less comfortable playing with champions you’re less than confident playing… when you put in practice learning them, are you doing so in normal/unranked games? i assumed, maybe naively, that when you did the midlane climb, you were uploading every game you played on that account in ranked in order to keep it the most realistic, honest, & consistent regarding the LP gains & losses. I think it’s most valuable, from a player as knowledgeable & experienced as you - for people to watch how you struggle on a champion in order for you to vocalize the strategies you use for correcting your mistakes. most people struggling to improve in league are doing so because the don’t even know what mistakes they are making. & i think that’s the most valuable thing to learn is where you need improvement & also how to implement changes for improvements. anyway, just another check in my book for why i will watch everything you upload as soon as i have time lmao

I think those top lane videos are so great for new players who feel bad when they try a new champ or a new lane, because it shows them that every lane has their own playstyle, and you almost have to re-learn how to play the game, so now I hope they can see that it's ok to not be confortable when they want to try a new lane, and they shouldn't give up after 1 game. Brother, love your vids! Hope you don't mind but i'd love to give you my thoughts, as you mentioned in the video Garen's E shreds armout but it also scales off of Attack Speed! So Zerks are a great option, a must buy in my opinion, followed by Stride then PD. Attack speed and Crit! Thats what garen loves! He also loves overstaying when behind making use of his passive to get the shove on the enemy and base with a good timer. You also have the right Idea when it comes to splitpushing on Garen, it's a good stratergy, if you have Ult and Ignite, you can oneshot somone with Garens burst and then run with Phaserush after or just run depending on the circumstance! He is also pretty summoner spell reliant champ, specifically Flash but Ignite is almost a must take also to get that snowball rolling. Anyways thanks again for another banger of a video! Love when youtubers put out bad games looking for feedback your a real one Pekin and proper OG of LOL

@Defnotdiablo
@Defnotdiablo Ай бұрын
@@giovannidozzi the point and click silence gives him movement speed so him being melee often doesnt matter especially in top lane where 70% of the games youll face a melee champ, his ult is pretty much instant death if he gets on top of you as a squishy (and he's a bruiser), he has surprisingly good burst as a champ that builds attack speed, he's very tanky so unless you're ahead of him you're not gonna be able to outdps him, all of his abilities aa reset and since his ult is point and click you can't flash or dodge it. When he's behind, he sucks until he has 3 items, when he's ahead there is 0 counterplay which is at least unlike riven or something where you can outplay her if youre good enough. If a Garen is on top of you and you aren't a tank or bruiser you are probably dead. Just yesterday I was playing qiyana, i was 10/1, a garen waited in a bush to try to kill me, I reacted accordingly and full combod him and he went to around 40% hp with no armour items, at which point he flash Q'd on top of me and got me to half hp with E and then ulted me just as I got grass Q to stealth. I press tab and see he's 1/7. Garen into range sucks dogwater but garen in melee feels horrible to play against unless youre a bruiser whos way ahead of him.
@giovannidozzi
@giovannidozzi Ай бұрын
@@Defnotdiablo Yes, his Q gives movement speed, but it isn't anything as near oppressive as Naafiri W, Akali R, Sylas E, or Yasuo/Yone E and Q3. Flash his Q, and then you're alright. I'm definitely not as skilled as others but from what I know of Garen, you don't really win your lane as much as win the map. It's hard for other top laners to match Garen's wave clear with E and so he is quite good at Proxy and Roaming. Even just going and harassing enemy junglers. Also Garen is not that strong early in the lane, it really only starts to threaten from 6 - 9 onwards. I think wave management is super important in top lane and I feel you let a wave push when you should've shoved and didn't stack a wave when you should've. When a champion doesn't have a 200 year kit, the fundamentals, especially wave management become so important in top lane to even make the lane playable I think.

Agreed. Garen's simplicity is a bit of a double edged sword because it leaves him really ride-or-die on macro decision making which isn't something one can really learn overnight. He is also really good for teaching patience in lane which is a major virtue in top lane that most players lack (forcing a state of non-interaction is a really good, though boring, Garen playstyle).

Really depends on the lane. This champion has built in damage reduction, sustain, armour shred and an execute...and that's on top of his ridiculous movement speed and his silence. He straight up shits on a lot of lanes. Illaoi just isn't one of them.

thanks for the transparency. ik its probably really annoying when you've played the game at a professional level, then when you upload yourself learning something new you get flamed by silver players lmao. but i do think showing this learning curve is really valuable content that for good reason, most dont upload. so thanks for sharing your top lane learning journey with us.

Yo pekin let me give you some tl;dr for toplane, because there are a few different types of champs and you have to keep different things in mind when playing them: 1. Stat checkers ("easy" champs): really just matchup knowledge some matchups you can win others you just sit under turret 2. "Skill champs" (riven, fiora etc): git gud lol, also matchup knowledge is required for every toplaner 3. Ranged tops: either scaling picks where you wanna farm out or lane bullies but keep in mind it's hard to bully some matchups like... 4. Tanks (aka "wholesome chungus"): with most of them you wanna scale into teamfights and look for TP roams, kinda good into ranged because you just tank their dmg with second wind + dshield and never ever die Hope this was helpful

I saw a video of of xPetu where he fought against an Illaoi. He went in to fight her when she hits her E, so she can't just freely hit his clone, or whatever it is. This way he wouldn't get slowed as much. At least that's what it seemed like to my, untrained eyes. Anyways, awesome video as always, Pekin. :)

Dear Isaac, I haven't even played League for years. Think about it, I watch your videos every day. We love you buddy. So please share the matches you think are bad so that everyone can benefit from them. I wish you a nice week.

Garen is very much THE 'learn top lane' champ. His kit is simple so that you can be reasonably effective without needing mechanics, so you can focus on your lane. In essence Garen wins by being the better top laner. As you found, in lane, in most matchups, you want to follow the 'taking turns' approach to wave management. If your opponent won't let you take your turn, just sit under tower and use your sustain to make it painful for them... either by chipping away at them, or starving them out of farm/kills. Or both. If you leave laning phase relatively even, Garen 'won'. Obviously there are exceptions, but in general this holds true. Garen spikes pretty well, so mid game you can quickly become a monster. He doesn't scale exceptionally hard though, so you really want to push your advantage. Late game you want to be absorbing as much attention as you can, back out of the fight for a couple, and come back in to do it again after your passive brings you back up.

Appreciate the honesty! even if you do poorly, it too could teach something to those that willing to learn. otherwise, we all know that we all have bad games. thus, im gonna watch both!

Garen is very much a war of attrition type of champ. His passive turns on when you're not engaging, so your actively encouraged to avoid fighting. You find an opening, cash in a combo of auto-q-auto reset-e, then back out and heal. Your E clear waves nicely, so you want to keep them on the edge of the spin while you back away, similar to Darius. This way, if they chase you, chances are you have minion advantage and are actively dealing damage while gaining some distance. What this adds up to is you whittling them down while you recover, making an all-in opening with your ult as an execute. If you dump your E onto the wave too much and push, you lose your ability to poke at them since they are under turret and they can turn off your passive easily. Garen is a sloooow keep-away champ that keeps gaining momentum, which is a big pivot from bursty champs who want to scrap, like Fiora and Riven.

Garen is all about patience and spacing. He has very little in his kit so excelling on him is just pure mastery of the basics. A solid few examples I can give on this is understanding wave clearing safely, seeing enemies step out into auto q range for a punish, sitting back and letting minions die when under pressure of a gank / death on stacked wave. There's a lot that goes into playing him well and most of it is just mastery of his matchups and powerspikes. All that being said I haven't watched the video yet and will reply with any advice I have on the champion

I've actually decided not to comment on this as its a lot to explain even within the first 5 minutes of the game. I'de say play it more and just get a feel for your spikes honestly.

also as much as I love phase rush, into bruisers like Illaoi who you have to contest to not get ran down, conq is just required. Illaoi hates when the wave isn't in her favor so dominating early against her matters a looot

Truly last note I'm going to make its almost not optional whether or not you take Berserker's Grieves. It just gives too much damage to Garen.

I appreciate you showing games you do poorly in because its something I can relate to more, compared to you just popping off and going like 6-1 within 4 minutes. When you're playing poorly, you have to play differently compared to if you were just ahead. I feel like more players find themselves going even or going behind, than being ahead, so seeing your thought process and what to do when playing behind helps.
