This question has been a recurrent criticism among antagonists of religion. It has even stirred doubts in many believers who have been worn down by its relentless repetition, or who have simply lost hope in ever having it answered to their satisfaction.
This animation breaks down why the question itself is problematic, and addresses the more pertinent question: "Why do we need to worship God?"

Another aspect is to prove our lack of arrogance/pride by submitting to God. Because if we're too arrogant/prideful to do that, then that's a big flaw in us. Also we praise many things in life such as celebrities, etc., so imagine how worthy of praise God is!

The difference with the doctor metaphor is that the doctor did not create the society in which the patient has these problems, and did not create the patient to be wired to struggle with these problems, so of course it is not selfish for them to help. But if God's way of helping us is to have us worship him, isn't that selfish? Why would he create humans whose main source of fulfillment would have to be through him, if not for selfish reasons?

Allah says in a beautiful hadith qudsi: "O son of Adam, so long as you call upon Me and ask of Me, I shall forgive you for what you have done, and I shall not mind. O son of Adam, were your sins to reach the clouds of the sky and were you then to ask forgiveness of Me, I would forgive you. O son of Adam, were you to come to Me with sins nearly as great as the earth and were you then to face Me, ascribing no partner to Me, I would bring you forgiveness nearly as great as its.” (Tirmidhi) Finally Allah says: “Remember Allah during times of ease and He will remember you during times of difficulty” (Tirmidhi) Thanking Allah - "And [remember] when your Lord proclaimed, 'If you are grateful, I will surely increase you [in favor]...” (Qur'an, 14:7) ------------------------------------------------------------ Salman al-Farsi reported: The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said, "Verily, Allah is conscientious and generous. He would be shy, when a man raises his hands to Him, to turn them away empty and disappointed." Source: Sunan al-Tirmidhī 3556 Grade: Sahih (authentic) according to Al-Albani

The question here is flawed. God does not ask for our worship. According to the Bible God demands it. "God is not Human" is very much in question. If we Humans are made in his "image". That image is Human. Therefore either God is human or just his image is. And since God is prone to anger, sadness, regret, killing, just as humans are. That certainly points to a Human God.

So in the start you say God is incomprehensible and then further on say that God is benevolent etc so that means God is comprehensible. Also if praying is useful to humans why punish in the hereafter? Exercising is beneficial to humans but if someone doesn’t do it we don’t burn them in hell? Why pray in certain fashion which is very mechanical- 5 times a day with rukkuh ,sazda etc ? This al doesn’t make any sense- one can pray God in any way or form

I don't know if you're a Muslim. But I'll try to reply in a sensible manner so that you could understand regardless of being a Muslim or a non-Muslim. "God is Incomprehensible." This is a very vague statement. Yes, I say it's vague, because it means only one thing when read simply: "God cannot be understood, in any way, by anyone." If one uses this statement, the reader must look into the context of the statement. In this video, the context is that "there is so much that we don't understand about the universe itself. Then it only makes sense that we cannot (in this life) understand God fully." In this context, it is simply put "God is Incomprehensible." But it doesn't mean that we know nothing about Him. You still might think it's contradictory. I'll give an example: "You are in a marathon training. You're instructed to run 10 miles everyday by your coach. You run, run, and run. After 8 miles, you become exhausted. And you say, "I can't reach 10 miles" to your coach. And your coach understands you are tired and that you've completed 8 miles, so he says "it's okay." The next day, you come up fresh. And you finish your 10 miles that day." On the first day, you said "I can't reach 10 miles." And the next day you did. Is that contradictory? No. Because they are different days. And also you made it up to 8 miles that day. It wasn't nothing, right? It means something. Likewise, in this world, you cannot comprehend God fully. But it doesn't mean you know nothing about Him. You only know stuff about Him that which He said Himself (in the Qur'an), "God is Most Gracious, Most Merciful", and many other things in the Qur'an which God Himself says to us about Him. Prayer is beneficial to us. But it is also an obligation given to us by God. If one doesn't fulfill his obligation, He has all the rights to punish him if He wills. He is the Master and we are His servants. We don't get to dictate the relationship. He has authority over everything. Not us. One can remember God in any form. Like simply sitting alone in a room, thinking and thanking God for His Blessings. But prayer is, again, an obligation, with benefits to us. And an obligation, if it has a procedure, must be done with that procedure. We are very capable of winning gold medals in Olympics but not to bow and prostrate a few times for God?

@@AathifMohammed I don't think you really got to the heart of his question, though. Why would a benevolent God (quoting the video) punish someone who doesn't pray in a very specific way? Why is that very specific way the only way to derive benefit? You're just accepting the fact that it's an obligation and accepting that you'll be punished for not following through on it...You wouldn't punish your own mother if she missed a prayer/doesn't pray correctly, why would God, who I'm sure you claim is more merciful than you, punish her with something worse than anyone could ever imagine? I have a tough time accepting that kind of reality...
@AathifMohammed
@AathifMohammed 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaredgreenhouse6603 Hmm, I get you. It all goes back to what you actually believe in. If you are a Muslim, then by definition, you acknowledge that God is One, the Most Just and the Most Merciful. I'm not talking about a layman Muslim. I'm describing a Muslim who is a Muslim by choice, after thorough research, and pondering over the nature of the Qur'an and accepting that it is the Speech of God. So, in that context, you acknowledge your Master's Judgement, as you believe He is the Most Just, even if you and I fail to see reason in His Judgement. But, if you are an atheist, or a non-Muslim, you don't really care about whether Islam is true or not, you will just jump straight into this kind of an argument, which I believe can only be had if a person admits that God is Most Merciful, Most Just. BTW, I used "you" just as a way of speech. I don't really mean you, it could be anybody. Don't get offended.😂 I don't know if I have put it clearly but what I'm saying is: If a person believes that God is One, Almighty, Most Just, Most Merciful, and that he could not always see the wisdom behind God's actions, there is no need for him to argue why He punishes someone if he doesn't pray. Because since he believes He is Most Just, there is no way he could say "Oh, but that seems unjust." It would be a contradiction on himself. But for a non-believer, he doesn't believe in the God he is talking about. So he jumps straight into God's actions ignoring God's Attributes because according to him, they're all lies anyway, so he will judge Him for His Attributes with His actions, like we do for regular people. You know, if someone comes up to us in the road and says "I have never lied since my birth," we would have a hard time believing the guy. We have no context, no knowledge of his history/past, so we will judge him by his actions going forward. This kind of atheist mentality is applied to judge God?😂 And BTW, about punishing for not praying. Islam always taught God is the Most Just. Islam has taught that such and such is the punishment for such sins. But in the end of the day, it doesn't mean that everyone will be punished for every sin they did, even if they're going to Paradise. There will be people who will be going to Paradise who have lied, missed prayers, but were not punished. Because God is Most Forgiving and Most Merciful. Likewise, each and every person will be judged in the Most Just way. On that Day, no one will be wronged. So, it is inconceivable for me when you say that someone who missed a prayer will be going to Hell for eternal punishment. You and I cannot decide that's the case. Who are we? And I could find no reference in the literature of Islam where it says "you will be punished for sure if you miss a prayer." Then, I don't know who will enter Paradise.😂 About why a specific way to pray... Again, if you are a believer in Islam, that is the way God wants you to pray and the Prophet ﷺ taught us how. If you are a non-believer, it just looks like exercise to you, and you will find the idea of being submissive to a Higher Being by bowing and prostrating ridiculous and you will rebel.

@@AathifMohammed So it seems to me that being a believer means living with "suspension of disbelief." i.e. convincing oneself that not everything has to make sense in order to be accepted. If you look at a rule or story that seems objectively unjust, you remind yourself that God is, as you say, the Most Just and therefore that you must be interpreting things incorrectly. Is that accurate?
@AathifMohammed
@AathifMohammed 2 жыл бұрын
@@jaredgreenhouse6603 You almost got my point, but not exactly. A believer will suspend disbelief, but not because of blind faith, but because of firmness in what he believes. Let me explain. Me being a Muslim, sometimes doubts penetrate even my mind about the workings of Islam and some moral questions, etc. At such times, I start looking for the answers. Because my faith is important to me, and it is important to me that I'm on the right faith and the true one. And it is what Islam teaches too. To keep learning. "Seeking knowledge is an obligation upon every Muslim" is a saying of the Prophet ﷺ. Whenever I start looking, I always found the answer to every single question I've ever had about Islam. It reassures my faith in my heart and that I'm on the right path. Making my belief even firmer. I tell you, you have no idea how many questions I've had. Not layman questions, but like serious questions regarding morality, punishment, restrictions, the nature of God. The big stuff. I've found answers to every single one of them. I'm not lying. It did take some time for me to do research and come to conclusions. So, given all this, now comes your point: that one convinces oneself that not everything has to make sense in order to be accepted. And I hope you agree with the point as well. Like, I have no idea in what kind of space/dimension God exists. I mean, if I think about it, it is stupid of me to even assume that He, being the creator of all space, would require "space" of any sort to exist. Now, I don't make a fuss out of it. Because it doesn't matter. It doesn't affect the truth of what I've learned about Islam. The other things. So, I live with that. "Objectively unjust"? Morality is, by definition, an ideological presupposition of some sort. Do you have a way to objectify morality in such a way that we can find the ultimate truth? Please do enlighten me about what you mean by that. And as I've already said, God doesn't punish you for missing a prayer. Of course, if you miss it intentionally out of laziness, or other worldly "priorities" that couldn't wait for 5 mins, then, of course. But then again, there is this beautiful concept of repentance and forgiveness in Islam. It is emphasized so much in the Qur'an and the hadith. And I wonder why people who argue about morality and punishment from God, don't ever consider looking into these concepts. Because the scenario that they jump into, "so let's assume God is punishing someone for missing a prayer. Is it just?"... This scenario can only occur IF a person doesn't pray regularly because he is lazy, or finds other things worthwhile, never felt guilty for it and never repented, or believes that God doesn't exist and it turns out to be otherwise after his death. The person who argues ignores all these mistakes of the guy whose sole purpose of creation, according to the God who turned out to be truly existing after his death, was to worship Him and live the worldly life as a test for the Hereafter. Now this is his religion. That's what it teaches. And if he ignores all that, disbelieves in all that, does all he want in this life which was meant to be a test, and fails in it, and then if God punishes for him for what HE did, it is God who is unjust?
