Excluding the clothing companies of course. There’s tags, logos and trademarks on most clothing. Partly companies just not liking to share a billboard with another company maybe, idk. Hwy, Firsty! I understand the invasiveness of the five-year-old question, but think about what you said to a child’s curiosity. If you didn’t want to answer, you could’ve perhaps addressed the child’s parent privately because at five they are curious, but they need factual answers, not the sarcasm that you could give an older child or an adult for being obnoxiously curious. Obviously, you don’t have to go into a private details of whatever trauma it was that caused you to need a prosthetic body part, but perhaps project the wonder that because you couldn’t use the old part, you have a wonderful prosthetic. (Please do use that word, it’s a real word that even a five-year-old could add “ prosthetic” to their vocabulary) Adding perhaps, that you can still walk, run, and wear it with shoes or boots. Point being, making it a positive experience for the five-year-old, at the cost of your own discomfort, could one day be very important to their child should he or she have an accident and be needing a prosthetic themselves. You could be a great role model for such a child. This day and age has been all kinds of accidents and dismemberments that have been treated with prosthetics, that were not available and say the 1800s and perhaps the 1900s. When I watch “footless” Jo on her life’s adventure, I’ve learnt a lot about how to respect the person and silence my own curiosity when meeting somebody with an obvious prosthetic arm or foot. I wish you the best, and I hope you don’t take my comment as judgment, because I’m not. I’ve taught children from preschoolers all the way up to eighth grade. And studied child development. At age 5 if a parent didn’t overhear it and knew how to help the child, what you said could actually give an innocent child nightmares about his or her own belly button and actually losing a foot. I do see your good intentions of deflecting with wry humor what would otherwise be considered a rude comment if coming from an adult. If you had said that to a rude adult, I would’ve openly laughed. Not at you, but at your whitty response to the rude adult for the audacity of questioning something so personal of an obvious stranger. But a child sees concretely, and I’m sure that if you’re like most people, you wouldn’t intentionally inflict emotional conflict on a child. I have a long scar on my prominent arm, from elbow almost to my wrist, where my surgeon installed a tritium plat with 11 screws and a bunch of “cat gut” (that’s not made from felines) through a deli I ate surgery, miraculously protecting my ulnar nerve. So thankful that the surgeons had the skills needed to saving my right arm. I had fallen from an upright position to flat on my face with the exception, that my right arm hit first saving my face and bone structures there in. My smashed ulnar bone was assisted by the plate and the 11 screws held it in place. Actually, still hold it in place after allowing the destroyed bone to grow around it. My radial bone’s cap was detached during the fall and my humorous bone had cracks in it. My elbow was literally reformed after the radio cap was amputated. So in a way, my repaired elbow with the cat gut holding things in place, but mostly the titium plate is an inward prosthetic that my body accepted. The only thing showing is the long scar. Sometimes people ask about it, but it’s mostly mentioned by folks in medical settings, like an ER or hospital setting, when I’m being accessed for non related treatment, when IVs or blood needs to be drawn. Oh yeah, airports security too! When my scar was most obvious, it did draw a lot of attention and questions from family, friends, and even strangers, but mostly out of concern, instead of curiosity. Like “what happened to you!” And sometimes I’ll ask people with similar situations about what happened, and I’ll show them my scar and encourage them that full healing is possible. But it takes work! It took me years working at regaining strength, and full use of my right arm. My left arm and hand was actually in distress from being overused as both my temporary substitute prominent hand, and still as left hand. Surgeon did not give me false hope, saying that some people only can regain 50%, some regain 70% and it would be a miracle if I regained 85% of my range of motion, and that’s the best I could hope for. 🥺. Optimist at heart, I worked hard at it, worked through pain, with only Tylenol, physical therapy and heating pads. My goal was to regain as much as possible!! In the end, I passed 85%, and final result, was the regaining 99.99% of my 99% of my range of motion!!! My success was as palpable as Jo’s success in regaining her freedom to walk! But I understand that the challenges of needing ongoing adjustments and replacement parts or whole prosthetics is much more ongoing and challenging in a lifelong way. I applaud folks who want to go through this to accomplish their other life goals. 👏 👏 👏 I can only imagine the pain and the work, maybe calling that blood, sweat and tears, amputees have to go through to regain balance, confidence, poise. I loved watching Jo rejoice at finally having normal range of motion in her new ankle, regaining flection to her step, and joy at maneuvering climbing and descending with full grace regained. 🎉🎉🎉 I applaud your victories!🎉 I applaud, footless Jo’s victories!🎉. And I silently applaud folks, I noticed wearing prosthetics in public, when it’s not my place to gawk, or bring attention to a part of their body! My “prosthetic” is hidden by flesh and blood. But if I had lost that arm, and it had to have been removed, hopefully I would’ve had a modern day prosthetic and not a Captain Hook’s type hook. ❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤

@@Toxic8arbarianMany of us don’t want to be walking advertisements for the brands of whatever we wear. I avoid clothing and accessories that scream their brand name, mainly because I just don’t like their design, but also because I just don’t need to brag like that - and that *is* what wearing products with a prominent brand name is. I know who I am and am confident in that. I totally get why Jo doesn’t like the brand labels on her prostheses. I don’t know that there’s a status symbol element, but having *someone else’s name* prominently on an actual body part would be so very disturbing. I mean, that’s why I don’t even like clothing or purses that show those names or logos prominently. 😊 From a purely aesthetic POV, it interrupts the smooth expanse of color, at least with this particular prosthesis.

I'd wager the majority of people see the logo and think absolutely nothing of it. Agreed! Jo expressed this situation perfectly, even representing other parties' interests. But prosthetics and even mobility aids are extentions for the person relying on them. You can use decals very easily on the solid surfaces. I get mine from eBay in a design they already have, or sometimes I'll send in pictures of custom work. @@wendyannh oh, I fully understand it sucks. I'm not an amputee but I'm a wheelchair user who relies on a lot of braces. It's really annoying that these companies mark up their products in such an obnoxious way. I was just giving tips on how I cover it up. I could maybe be ok with a shadow company symbol that was barely visible unless you looked up close (like those police cars with black on black writing that they call ghost cars). Or even better, let the customer decide if they want to add the brand sticker to the product. But it's annoying on a wheelchair that costs thousands of dollars that I need to see the symbols for the chair company on both sides, the tire company in bright white on black lettering, the seat company (yeah even the seat needs to tell everyone it's an overpriced $400 inflatable cushion), the seat back (not always the same company as the seat base or the wheelchair), etc. What's even worse is that it's not like the sneaker world where there's hundreds of brands and you need to distinguish yourself. In the medical equipment field there's usually only a few brands available and you can't usually pick what you get - insurance picks for you. Plus with just a few companies out there, people who use the products can usually identify a brand just by looking at the design without the need for branding. So someone still needs to ask to find out the model or design number. So the advertising is completely useless in these cases, which makes the obnoxious ads even more obnoxious. Plus if I see a wheelchair user in a chair I like, I'll just ask them what brand and model - I don't need to be sneaking up behind them to catch the brand name. I'll ask them face to face do they like it, is it comfortable, is it durable, etc? The way medical equipment is branded reminds me of those rhinestone studded sweat pants with "Juicy" or things like that embroidered across the rear. It's like "look at me" or I feel like a NASCAR car with logos all over it. ETA: it's also annoying in a professional setting. It's one thing to put stickers on a chair or leg for fun, but if you're in a high end business meeting it looks silly to have a flower sticker on there. So you're kind of stuck being a rolling or walking advertisement. And I'm not paying big bucks just to turn around and advertise for someone. If they want me to advertise, then they need to pay me.
@wendyannh
@wendyannh 7 ай бұрын
@@Birdnerd1968I’m right there with you! My own wheelchair shouts the model name but not the manufacturer’s. It really doesn’t bother me, but when I found my DME provider had stuck their own label on the thing, that definitely didn’t make me happy, especially as their service got worse and worse. It’s kind of fun coming across people using the same model, like it is when you see someone else with the same car. I’m definitely not shy about asking other people about their chairs, or apparently modifications. Sociologically, I’m kind of intrigued by the way the whole universe of wheelchair users seems to exist and interact literally beneath the eye level of most people, almost in our own world. I just helped a friend get a class 3 chair, and I was appalled at the limited options for class 2s. If they hadn’t been able to get the class 3 approved, she likely would have ended up with a horrible chair that would have been much less durable and suitable overall than my class 1. What bothers me even more is how insurance won’t pay for so many truly necessary features, for both wheelchair users and prosthetics. The technology exists to make peoples lives so much better, like stair-climbing chairs, but insurance.
