To me i felt kinda sorry for her at times it seemed like everyone in her family had a unhealthy connection to her her Grandpa wanted to live his glory days through her her grandma wanted the little deputaunt and her mother wanted her to do everything she wasn't able to

I'm so glad to see a sympathetic analysis of Rory's character! I think it's an authentic writing choice for a gifted kid lacking a sense of identity to spiral in college. There are so many deep-seated psychological elements that contributed to her "downfall" that I can't sit here and put 100% of the blame on Rory, when she was never given the tools or preparation to handle the "real world", as it were. Anyway, thanks for this! I enjoyed the incorporation of wardrobe analysis, too.

To add on as a mom of teenagers during this time period most teenagers dressed the way Rory did in the first couple of seasons. It wasn’t about being serious or perfect the clothes were comfortable and practical.

LOVED this perspective! As a gilmore girls fan and psychology student, Rory's character is one I have strong feelings towards, both because I am her and I wish I wasn't. This was a very comprehensive view of who Rory is, and as unbiased as possible.

Same. My 'downfall' hasn't been so drastic, but the pressure of growing up with everyone exclaiming about how "brilliant" I am, to a mom who clearly wants me to do the things she didn't have the chance to do, was crushing till I just....let go.
@MsInescruz

@@no.6377 yes! It's great you had the guts to let go, I've been doing that too. I've been reshaping my life around much less concern for elitism and money and much more about love (for my work, for building a family, etc) and stability. I'm finding new value in me that I couldn't see if I continued seeing my life through my mother's eyes.

I find Emily Gilmore’s fashion the most interesting. Her St John knits are the uniform of the upper middle class society wife. When contrasted against to her coastal grandmother look in the remake, her clothes are almost another character. The iconic mother daughter fashion show where she dresses herself and Lorelei in matching St John pants suits was a great fashion moment. and her DAR meltdown was one of the greatest ever on tv. Explaining to the “trophy wife” why she’d never get in was classic.

I actually never watched Gilmore girls, but started watching it this fall. I remember my mother allways watching the show in the early 2000s. I was used to the sound and look of the show, but never knew the characters and plot line. Now I complety adore the show, and was truly stunned by the story of Rory. Amazing analysis as allways.

I have watched gilmore girls like 4 times all the way through. It’s the mistake of never not being important. yes she worked her butt off but is it really work if it’s what she loves to do? so she never realistically has to work to succeed. She never has to work at relationships because everyone just dawned over her, she never had to prove her talent because everyone was always blown away by how naturally talented she was. She never had to form a personality because she had her mother who did grow up fast and was helped out by kind hearted humans that cherished her and her daughter and she never had to change. Rory never had to be on her own or face adversity until she wasn’t told she was amazing. She never had to not be with the boy she liked because they always liked her back. And all this allowed her to be arrogant and entitled. She didn’t actually work hard she was told she worked hard because her hobbies were acedemic. Then when she needed to grab her ovum and go to work, she bailed, and her entire world crashed around her. I’ve personally been there. It got better. Mine was depression and stress and ptsd from deployment, not arrogance and entitlement, but my world still fell apart and I had to redirect who I was with other people and become a whole and complete person to myself and then to others. Everyone’s fashion choices reflect that when it comes to woman at least. The journey from girl to woman is WILD and society puts a lot of pressure on what we wear communicating to the world who we are, communicating to men if we are sexually available, communicating to strangers whether we are safe, communicating to others potential friendship, or whether we are just on our period or just had a baby…

As a long time and repeating watcher of Gilmore Girls I finally realized why I like the show, even though the main characters really bother me. One, I watched it because of Stars Hallow-my fantasy town and secondly, because I loved the fashion. I was a mom of teenagers during Gilmore Girl times. Style, fashion and dressing were so much easier then. The styles on this show were and are a breath of fresh air.

I think it could’ve. She loved journalism and she wanted to travel as well. Like that paper she did back in Yale about the secret society, she liked to discover new things or write in topics no else really did. I think if she got more experience and maybe even got help from a seasoned journalist, she could’ve done what she wanted. But I think her working for that company (I don’t remember what it was. But it was when they said she didn’t have the “stuff” basically for journalism) was a mistake. Yes it was a job, but it wasn’t something that’d challenge her. I think if she went out on her own and chased after the stories she wanted to whenever she wanted to would not only force her to take up that go getter attitude but also makes sure she wasn’t following in anyone’s direction but her own. She was a go getter, just not when she was also expected to listen and follow rules. She couldn’t just be a go getter in the meeting room, but in life as well.

For me she's lacking of the initiative a journalist must have, she's good at her job only when she's told what to do, that's normal in any job for the first years, but eventually we develop an opinion backed by experience.

This is beautiful, and thank you for the unbiased analysis. I see a lot of hate for Rory and her how her development went so it’s really nice to see something like this. Something that doesn’t vilify her for growing and making mistakes, but instead recognizing and explaining the events. Plus I loved the information with the clothes. I am going through a style change/crisis myself. I don’t know what to really wear anymore or how to style things for myself. And I’m scared to try things too out there for fear of being judged by friends and family. My interests are kinda in line with Rory’s light academia a little.

The problem was Rory was always put in a pedestal as the bright angel child that could never do wrong, and that gave her the mentality that anything she does has to be right by default, one example of this is when she became the other woman by cheating with Dean instead of aknowledging that what she was doing was morally wrong she remained firm that because he was HER Dean 1st she had the right to him over his wife. It shows that in her brain bc she was always the "good kid" she was entitled to anything she wanted even if that was stepping on others to get it. I dont think it was all Lorelei fault in her raising her, being a single parent is a tough gig but she may have dropped the ball in over treating Rory as her buddy and bestfriend far too many times that she lost standing as a disciplinarian, and by the time she realises that Rory is almost all grown up and there's not much to do about trying to fix those bugs in the system, it becomes Rory's job to evaluate if bettering herself is what she wants for herself. Kids will have lots of friends through out their lives but they dont get that many parents to raise them right.

I am so eager to hear your take on Lorelai's styles throughout the seasons. Because personally, I feel like Season 1 was the BEST stylistically--and thematically; however, I'm wondering if that's because of the time period (1997-2000) and the trends of that time period, or if it's her own personal costuming journey! Love your work!

This was really interesting! I remember Gilmore Girls being on when I was a kid/teenager, and even though I never sat down and watched all of it, I was always just kind of aware of everything that happened on the show, I guess because of the sporadic episodes I did see combined with the trailers that were always coming out and also combined with kids at school talking about it? Anyway, I'm now actually watching it for the first time all the way through. I just finished season 1--and it's so painful seeing Rory with all her hopes and dreams and knowing what happens to her--particularly in the revival. Anyway, my favorite outfits of hers are honestly still those preppy/academia looks. That has always been my favorite style! And I remember wishing I could wear her Chilton uniform when I was in school, lol.

What's depicted in that storyline is something that happens to a lot of parents who made it possible for their kids to have easier lives than them. She eanted her daughter to have the oportuunities she missed out on by having her and cutting ties with her wealth, but forgot to counter how this would impact someone with different life experiences. As soon as Richard and Emily took her under their wing, there was nothing Lorelai could do. The priviledge to fail upwards with no consequences and real challenges is what really undid all of her parenting and modelling and it's what happens pretty frequently.

Very interesting, although I don't agree with the framing of Rory growing up in two worlds. Actually, she has to face this "upper-class world" around 16, when she starts joining Chilton, going to her grandparents regularly, first time hangout with her grandfather. This very important moment of her wearing that golfing hat, her mother first wanting to mock it, then deciding otherwise. She starts enjoying dressing up when she is together with Logan. His influence on her is remarkable, for example when they have that double date with her mother and Luke. At Chilton, she was the one being annoyed by Francine and her talking about the length of the skirt. At the life and death brigade, you could see how she started adapting to their styles. I loved this episode when she dressed up as Uma Thurman. I would have liked your total view on Gilmore Girls including the netflix series "A year in the life". All in all, thanks for the breakdown.

while i don't hate your fashion analysis..... you should consider changing the title of your video. ''Why a Gifted Child’s Downfall is Inevitable'' your video had NOTHING to do with this topic. And that was a complete waste of time. i get that you are taking a fashionable approach to rory's changes throughout the series... a series I love and adore all too well... your video title implies that it is an analysis on psychology.... her clothing choices have nothing to do with ''Why a Gifted Child’s Downfall is Inevitable'' there literally was no WHY being answered.

While I agree on the point that the title should be changed because yes, it didn’t go into detail on why the downfall is inevitable but I don’t agree with your opinion on the clothing. Because this was a psychological video and the clothes had a lot to do with where Rory was mentally (psychologically). So the clothes did in fact play a big part and was important.

I actually thought that the aspect of the overarching praise Rory received in the beginning together with the persona and expectations put upon her by the outside world that she couldn't live up to in puberty related to the original title of the video pretty well.
